The Ghost in the Hall by K. M. Avery Pdf

Something is very wrong with the Fitzwilliam estate... It was supposed to be a regular séance job. But from the minute I met an angry ghost in the hall, I knew there wasn't going to be anything ordinary about this house or its dead residents. First of all, there were way too many of them. Second, some of them had been helped along from living to dead. Third, my attempt to figure out what was going on got a bit sidetracked when I met the gardener. He was tall, dark green, and handsome. And really, really smart. So I hired him to help me figure out what was going on. And that's when things got interesting, in more ways than one. I think I'm falling for an orc, and that's making it really hard to concentrate on doing my job, but if I don't, I'm going to be in a whole heap of trouble.

Viral Fusion Mechanisms by Joseph Bentz Pdf

Viral Fusion Mechanisms presents the first comprehensive review on this exciting topic. The book focuses on molecular mechanisms rather than phenomonology and examines a wide range of viruses, including influenza, HIV, Sendai, SFV, Vaccinia, VSV, and RSV. Recent theoretical work on dissecting protein-mediated membrane fusion is discussed, and the most promising new technologies for elucidating mechanisms are highlighted. Viral Fusion Mechanisms is an essential reference for biophysicists, cell biologists, colloid chemists, immunologists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, and virologists.

Trafficking of Intracellular Membranes: by Maria C. Pedroso De Lima,Nejat Düzgünes,Dick Hoekstra Pdf

This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "Trafficking of Intracellular Membranes: From Molecular Sorting to Membrane Fusion", held in Espinho, Portugal, from June 19 to June 30,1994. The objective of this Institute was to survey recent developments and to discuss future directions in the rapidly advancing field of membrane cell biology, with particular emphasis on the dynamical properties and intracellular flow of membranes. A wide range of interrelated topics around the central theme of intracellular trafficking of membranes was covered, including lipid flow, membrane fusion, dynamics of membrane components, protein folding and assembly, vesicular transport in membrane biogenesis, exocytosis and endocytosis. A large variety of experimental techniques and systems, including the application of viruses and model systems, to study these processes was also considered. Membrane cell biology is a broad discipline which encompasses many scientific areas including cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, virology, immunonology and genetics. Indeed, recent advances in the cell biology of membranes could not have been made without this multidisciplinary approach. Significant progress achieved during the last few years in understanding how newly synthesized lipids and proteins find their way to the cell organelles, how molecular sorting and the continuous flow of membranes allow each cellular membrane to maintain its own distinct molecular composition, and, thereby, the individuality of the various intracellular compartments, was discussed in considerable detail in this Institute.

Viruses and Viral Infections in Developing Countries by Snežana Jovanović-Ćupić,Muhammad Abubakar,Ayse Emel Onal,Muhammad Kashif Saleemi,Ana Božović,Milena Krajnovic Pdf

This book contains information on various virus families, with the focus on viruses causing prevalent infections in parts of developing countries in Africa and Asia. Viral proteins play an important role in their replication and infection potential, and are the main candidates for antiviral therapy and vaccines. While some antiviral vaccines are available for quite some time (e.g. MMR), there are regions in the world still struggling with some infections. This is especially the problem in regions where the morbidity rate from viral infections among young children is high. This situation requires urgent measures to put infections under control.

A cutting-edge collection of basic and state-of-the-art methods optimized for investigating the molecular biology of this class of retrovirus. These readily reproducible techniques range from methods for the isolation and detection of human retroviruses to cutting-edge methods for exploring the interplay between the viruses and the host. Here, the researcher will find up-to-date techniques for the isolation and propagation of HIV, HTLV, and foamy virus from a variety of sources. There are also assays for determining the cell tropism of HIV-1, the coreceptor usage of HIV-1, and human gene expression with HIV-1 infection by microarrays, as well as for phenotyping HIV-1 infected monocytes and examining their fitness. Highlights include the detection and quantification of HIV-1 in resting CD4+, a new cloning system for making recombinent virus, cDNA microarrays, and the determination of genetic polymorphisms in two recently identified HIV-1 co-factors that are critical for HIV-1 infection.

Multilingual Narratives of a Pandemic by Various,Catherine Boyle Pdf

We narrate everything. We construct the world around us by telling its stories, shaping the language we use to describe what is happening to us; language that is used and adapted in the media in response to moments of crisis. This language in turn shapes how we see the world. This is what we call 'worldmaking'. When we look for solutions to problems, we so often start by telling stories to each other in our communities, stories that set a crisis in context, relate it to our historical experience, help us to understand it in the context of our local communities and contrast those stories to dominant narratives. In this way, language becomes a physical and material force in our world, through which we construct our personal, local, transnational and spiritual identities. 'Worldmaking in the Time of COVID-19', the project that informs this book, was an early response to the experience of living through the COVID-19 pandemic - intended as a contribution to our collective understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following comparison and analysis of over 1.1 million news articles from 117 countries in twelve different languages, this timely reflection follows the course of this investigation, with three main objectives: - to capture the languages of the early pandemic (January- April 2020); - to offer a transferable methodology for exploring world events in multiple languages; - and to share some of the key findings of researchers. Like all the volumes in the Language Acts and Worldmaking series, the overall aim is two-fold: to challenge widely-held views about language learning as a neutral instrument of globalisation and to innovate and transform language research, teaching and learning, together with Modern Languages as an academic discipline, by foregrounding its unique form of cognition and critical engagement. Specific aims are to: · propose new ways of bridging the gaps between those who teach and research languages and those who learn and use them in everyday contexts from the professional to the personal · put research into the hands of wider audiences · share a philosophy, policy and practice of language teaching and learning which turns research into action · provide the research, experience and data to enable informed debates on current issues and attitudes in language learning, teaching and research · share knowledge across and within all levels and experiences of language learning and teaching · showcase exciting new work that derives from different types of community activity and is of practical relevance to its audiences · disseminate new research in languages that engages with diverse communities of language practitioners.
