Glorious Gospel Triumphs by John Watsford Pdf

Excerpt from Glorious Gospel Triumphs: As Seen in My Life and Work in Fiji and Australasia Life and work in Fiji and Australasia, but have shrunk from doing so, lest it might seem to be incon sistent With Christian humility. But my brethren have pleaded another consideration that should have weight With me. They have said that the facts in my possession were not my 'own, and that if published they might help other workers, and bring glory to my blessed Lord. This greatly influenced me, for I only Wish to live to glorify God, and do good to others. But, being still perplexed with doubts and fears, I have taken all to the Lord, and earnestly pleaded for light and guidance. A deep and painful sense of great unfaithfulness would keep me silent, and incline me to burn every record of the past; but, after much waiting upon God, I em now fully persuaded it is His Will that I should publish this book, and I have consented to do so. I do not write. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Custodians of the Gift by Guido Carlo Pigliasco Pdf

Emerging from more than two decades of research in the field and in the archives, the essays collected here explore the multifaceted topic of the Fijian firewalking ceremony, the vilavilairevo. The collection examines the intersection of the intertwined topics of cultural property, reproduction of tradition, and change with issues of (post)colonial representation, authenticity, and ethnic identity. The essays advance new insights on the tourist gaze and the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and pose serious questions regarding the role of digital and social media as tools for preserving cultural legacies and extending traditional cultural worlds into new domains. Focusing on the response of the Sawau tribe of the island of Beqa to the commodification of the vilavilairevo as their iconic practice, this essay collection ultimately illuminates how the Christian cultural dynamics and unprecedented dogmatic schism surrounding the vilavilairevo spectacle are reshaping local notions of heritage, social sentiment, and social capital.

William Taylor and the Mapping of the Methodist Missionary Tradition by Douglas D. Tzan Pdf

This book is the first critical biography of William Taylor, a nineteenth-century American missionary who worked on six continents. Following Taylor’s global odyssey, the volume maps the contours of the Methodist missionary tradition and illumines key historical foundations of contemporary world Christianity. A work of social history that places a leading Methodist missionary in the foreground, this narrative illustrates distinctive aspects and tensions within Methodist missions such as the importance of doctrines like universal atonement and entire sanctification, a deeply pragmatic orientation rooted in God’s providence, an embrace of both entrepreneurial initiatives and networked connection, and the use of revivalism for missionary outreach and leadership development. A Virginia native, Taylor became a Methodist preacher and missionary in California. This volume provides an important narrative account of Taylor’s career as an itinerant revivalist and popular author, in which he toured the eastern United States, the British Isles, and Australasia. Taylor’s participation in the South African revival made him an evangelical celebrity. The author also follows Taylor’s important visits to India and South America, where he initiated new Methodist missions in those contexts and pioneered the concept of “tentmaking” missions. In 1884, Taylor was elected missionary bishop of Africa by his church. By the end of his life, Taylor had recruited or inspired hundreds of Methodists to become foreign missionaries.
