Medical Aspects of Disability by Herbert H. Zaretsky,Edwin F. Richter,Myron G. Eisenberg Pdf

Designated a Doody's Core Title!. Medical Aspects of Disability is a true interdisciplinary textbook, representing collaboration between experts from many professions and specialties. An overview of themes and principles of rehabilitation is provided. Numerous disabling conditions and disorders are covered not only from clinical but also functional, psychological, and vocational perspectives. Special topic chapters address important new trends and processes within the field of rehabilitation and health care at large. The book is designed as a resource for rehabilitation professionals across many disciplines. Each chapter provides concise but significant coverage of topics, and extensive references to facilitate further exploration. The book can be used as a textbook and as a reference tool for the practitioner. With the field's increasing move toward evidence-based practice, a need for information in the areas of accreditation and outcome measurement has arisen. In response, the editors have added an essential special topics chapter detailing the importance of the accreditation process as a fundamental component of the quality assurance and improvement process. This is an excellent resource as both a textbook and reference guide, to inform and assist graduate and undergraduate students (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work, psychology, nursing, vocational counseling, therapeutic recreation, hospital administration), as well as practitioners, about the most current information on the etiology, and clinical symptoms of a wide variety of medical and disabling conditions.;index

A Woman's Guide to Coping with Disability by Anonim Pdf

Despite the recent increased interest in women's health, little has been written about and for disabled women. This outstanding new source meets a genuine need by providing an overview of all aspects of women's lives and how disability affects them as workers, homemakers, parents, and caregivers. Necessities such as driving, obtaining adequate medical care, enjoying recreation and travel, as well as personal concerns related to sexuality, pregnancy, and childbirth are all addressed. The guide covers federal laws, housing, coping with daily activities at home and in the workplace and the most common conditions that disable women: arthritis, diabetes, epilepsy, lupus, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, and spinal cord injury. Each chapter contains a bibliography or sources cited in the text, a referral list of organizations, and a resource list of books, audio- and videotapes, and vendors of assistive devices. Quotes from disabled women illustrate their coping skills and the impact of their conditions on their lives. -Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., Cal. -Library Journal.

Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation in Primary Health Care by Who Division of Rehabilitation Pdf

Describes a step wise process of assessment, planning, and action that can be used to improve disability prevention and rehabilitation within the context of primary health care. Aware of the constraints often faced in district level services, the guide concentrates on measures that can be taken without the need for additional staff and without creating an excessive burden on time. Most activities described can be completed in the course of a one-day workshop. Throughout, numerous practical examples are used to illustrate how the process actually works in practice and the types of community problems it can address. The guide, which is intended for district health and rehabilitation managers, has six chapters. The first explains how to use a one-day workshop to launch a district initiative for disability prevention and rehabilitation. Chapter two, on information gathering, explains pertinent sources of readily available information, and offers advice on how to use questionnaires and interviews to gather additional information. A time frame of six months is suggested for this research phase. Chapter three explains how to involve the community in the identification of problems and the planning of action. The remaining chapters cover assessment and planning at the district health level, monitoring and supervision of the current system for disability prevention and rehabilitation, and collaboration with other sectors, such as education, social services and labor, which can contribute to disability prevention and rehabilitation.

Handbook of Disability Studies by Gary L. Albrecht,Katherine D. Seelman,Michael Bury Pdf

This path-breaking international handbook of disability studies signals the emergence of a vital new area of scholarship, social policy and activism. Drawing on the insights of disability scholars around the world and the creative advice of an international editorial board, the book engages the reader in the critical issues and debates framing disability studies and places them in an historical and cultural context. Five years in the making, this one volume summarizes the ongoing discourse ranging across continents and traditional academic disciplines. To provide insight and perspective, the volume is divided into three sections: The shaping of disability studies as a field; experiencing disability; and, disability in context. Each section, written by world class figures, consists of original chapters designed to map the field and explore the key conceptual, theoretical, methodological, practice and policy issues that constitute the field. Each chapter provides a critical review of an area, positions and literature and an agenda for future research and practice. The handbook answers the need expressed by the disability community for a thought provoking, interdisciplinary, international examination of the vibrant field of disability studies. The book will be of interest to disabled people, scholars, policy makers and activists alike. The book aims to define the existing field, stimulate future debate, encourage respectful discourse between different interest groups and move the field a step forward.
