Lieut. Gullivar Jones: His Vacation was the original tittle of the last novel by Edwin Lester Arnold. It was first published in 1905, however, when Ace Books reprinted Arnold's novel in 1964, it was retitled Gulliver of Mars. The novel combines elements of both fantasy and science fiction, and is considered a precursor and likely inspiration to Edgar Rice Burroughs's classic A Princess of Mars, which spawned the sword and planet genre. The concept of a military man going to Mars, exploring strange civilizations and falling in love with a princess had been explored as far back as Percy Greg's Across the Zodiac (1880), but the connections between Gullivar and John Carter, the protagonist of Burroughs' Barsoom novels, are more numerous and stronger. Gullivar Jones is a military man in the United States Navy who arrive on Mars by apparently magical means and has numerous adventures there, including falling in love with Martian princesses. Gullivar stumbles in and out of trouble and never quite succeeds in mastering it. The fact that Gullivar does not quite defeat his enemies or get the girl in the end helps explain why Arnold's Martian saga was not as popular as Burroughs'.

Like Lemuel Gulliver, Gullivar Jones employs his courtesies to gain the goodwill of the Martian society. Arnold's novel calls back to Swift's also because it takes a satirical look at society and its irrational particularities of structure. The new element it introduces to that concept is that of swashbuckling space adventure. Jones finds himself in a world of weaklings where he, an average man of our own world, is now superior both in physical strength and mental resolve. This is reminiscent of THE TIME MACHINE, published ten years prior, which thrust its protagonist into a world of soft and simple people who were helpless to defend themselves whenever a threat was introduced into their peaceful primitive lives. Inspired (quite generously) by GULLIVER OF MARS, Edgar Rice Burroughs crafted his own Mars epic, the Barsoom stories of John Carter. Burroughs must have been directly influenced by Arnold's story, because John Carter's adventures follow the same basic framework. Unlike Gullivar Jones, Carter finds himself on Mars after a run-in with Apaches ends with his death. Much like Twain's Hank Morgan, Carter inexplicably wakes up to find himself on the alien world of Barsoom, which he in time comes to learn is the planet Mars. Like its predecessors, A PRINCESS OF MARS makes no effort to explain in rational terms how this is possible.

Gullivar Jones is a good soldier, there is no question of that. He is driven to the ends of the Red Planet to find his love. But he does not bore the reader with constant reminders of what a good soldier he is. On the contrary, with the novel being written in the style of a memoirs, Jones is almost too humble about himself and the credibility of his story. The defining characteristic of the Martian civilization is that they are such an ancient, lethargic race that marriages are decided by public draw and assented to by an attitude just above apathy. Jones is an oddity not merely because of his strange dress and manner, but because of his passion for the princess. Contagious, it spreads to her and she is willing to risk her own life to provide Jones a means of identifying her ballot in the jar. Just when it seems his goal of bedding his mistress is reached, she is snatched away by the invading barbarians from afar. Furious, Jones tries to frenzy an army to no avail. The men of Mars are too cowardly, comfortable and indifferent. The only one who isn't is the prince, who sold off the princess out of jealously, the opposite of Jones' wholesome and manly red blood. Making his way by land and sea, Jones tours the Martian environs and befriends its people. Once or twice he even catches himself feeling more sympathy for the brutish, hairy barbarians than for the weak and waifish native peoples of his princess. Still he presses onwards to win her back to her people and his breast. Nevermind, of course, that he does have a girl back home that he was engaged to before the magic carpet spirited him away. She does come to mind occasionally whenever he fears that he will meet his end on this faraway world. He wonders what has become of her and what she must be feeling at this moment, but the wondering passes when he concentrates again on his quest to find his girl in this port.
