Historical Sketch of the Persecutions Suffered by the Catholics of Ireland Under the Rule of Cromwell and the Puritans (Classic Reprint) by Patrick Francis Moran Pdf

Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the Persecutions Suffered by the Catholics of Ireland Under the Rule of Cromwell and the Puritans Our Divine Redeemer repeatedly forewarned his disciples that they would have to suffer trials and persecutions in this world, and to drink the bitter cup of affliction to the dregs. "You shall lament and weep," said He to them, "but the world shall rejoice; and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be changed into joy" (John, xvi. 20). "I send you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Beware of men. For they will deliver you up in councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues" (Matt. x. 16). "And they will put you out of their synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doth a service to God" (John, xvi. 2). What our Lord foretold was accomplished to the letter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A New History of Cromwell's Irish Campaign by Philip G. McKeiver Pdf

The Stories of Cromwell in Ireland are the stuff of Myths and Legends. This book factually disputes some of the spin and legend created about Cromwell in Ireland, and reflects some of interests of the parties involved. It shows that some of the controversy surrounding Cromwell is to say the least not factually based, and perhaps may be biased reflecting the opinions of the Catholic Church, Rich and wealthy landowners, and the Governments of England, Ireland. This book although sympathetic to the Parliamentary cause, bases its arguments on the factual historiography of the time, rather than the myths and legends that were created and devloped to support alternative views and perspectives. One of the main points ignored by most historians is the commercial view taken by Cromwell in not killing Irish people, but rather selling them into Slavery in the English Colonies of America to repay the Treasury to offset the costs of the Wars in Ireland.

Mission to a Suffering People by Thomas J Morrissey Pdf

In 16th and 17th century Ireland religion and nationality fused together in a people’s struggle to survive. In that struggle the country’s links with Europe provided a life line. Members of religious orders, with their international roots, played an important role. Among them were the Irish Jesuits, who adapted to a variety of situations – from quiet work in Irish towns to serving as an emissary for Hugh O’Neill in the south of Ireland and in the courts of Rome and Spain, and then founding seminary colleges in Spain and Portugal from which young Irishmen returned to keep faith and hope alive. In the seventeenth century persecution was more haphazard. There were opportunities for preaching and teaching and, at time, especially during the Confederation of Kilkenny in the 1640s, for the open celebration of one’s religion. This freedom gave way to the savage persecution under Cromwell, which resulted in the killing of some Jesuits and others being forced to find shelter in caves, sepulchres, and bogs, the Jesuit superior dying alone in a shepherd’s hut on an island off Galway. There followed a time of more relaxed laws during which Irish Jesuits publicly ran schools in New Ross and, for Oliver Plunkett, in Drogheda, but persecution soon resumed and Oliver Plunkett was arrested and martyred. At the end of the century, as the forces of King James II were finally defeated, some Jesuits lived and worked through the sieges of Limerick and then nerved themselves to face the Penal Laws in the new century.
