Excerpt from History of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope: From Its Discovery to the Year 1819; From 1820 to 1868 The history of the Cape Colony, to a comparatively recent period, is, in truth, the history of South Africa; and a narrative of the progress of civilization in this vast region cannot fail to be fraught with interest. Nearly 400 years have elapsed since Diaz formally declared Southern Africa an appanage of the Portuguese Crown, and since then events so numerous and interesting have occurred, that it does not seem too much to assert that the history of no other British Settlement is so worthy of attention as that of the Cape Colony. The visits of early navigators, and the labours of pioneer travellers, merit a chronicle, and the contest between the Dutch and English for the possession of the Cape, as well as the mode of govern ment adopted by each, deserve our notice. Honesty of purpose, and the exercise of much labour and patience is required, and the road is rugged because only partially travelled. However, so many portions of it have now been explored by able and trustworthy pioneers, that the work is much less arduous than formerly, and it may be hoped that a connected narrative of some interest can be compiled. Excerpt from British South Africa: A History of the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope From Its Conquest 1795 to the Settlement of Albany by the British Emigration of 1819 (A. D. 1795 A. D. 1825); With Notices of Some of the British Settlers of 1820 The following pages are the outcome of a long-cherished wish to contribute to the stock of information respecting the British Settlement in the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope. What little there is of this portion of the history of the Colony is now antiquated, and no writer has given particulars of the British Settlers themselves, their experiences after arrival, and their troubles and trials before the severe sufferings they had to endure by successive Kafir wars. The history of these wars is full enough, in which the British military forces figure prominently with distinction, while the ruin of the Settlers themselves is hardly alluded to. Many circumstances prevented my attempting anything in this direction whilst resident in Graham's Town. It was not till quite the evening of my life, and retirement from the public service in Griqualand West, that sufficient freedom from the distractions of unceasing labour allowed of my making a commencement of the work, and it has been pursued under difficulties, amidst many cares and anxieties. The work, however, was one of interest to me, and the disadvantage of distance from Graham's Town and Cape Town - where ready access could be obtained to such works as it was necessary to read and consult by way of preparation for my task - was lightened by the numerous books on South Africa to be found on the shelves of the Kimberley Public Library within my reach. Kind friends also supplied me with the loan of such other publications relating to the Settler period which were not to be found in that excellent institution. The opportunity also presented itself to me about three years ago to pay a short visit to Cape Town, where, by the kind permission of the authorities, the original records of the past preserved in the archives could be examined, and from which copious notes and extracts were made to serve my purpose.
