One Step Beyond by Chris Moon Pdf

Ex-soldier Chris Moon is a hero for our times. After leaving the army, he found that he missed the challenge of military life and applied to join the mine-clearance programme organised by the HALO Trust (Hazardous Areas Life Support Organisation). He was stationed first in Cambodia where he and two other colleagues were kidnapped by the Khmer Rouge and faced execution. From Cambodia he was sent to supervise mine-clearance in Mozambique and while on duty was blown up by a mine in the supposedly clear area of the safety lane. The mine had been buried deep below the surface, beyond metal detector range, and the explosion cost Chris his lower right leg and right arm. But Chris decided to continue the fight for land mine victims and, less than a year after leaving hospital, completed the London marathon. One step beyond will be Chris moon's account of his life so far.

Strengths-Based HPI by Hawley Kane Pdf

Strengths-based human performance improvement (HPI) focuses on how managers and employees can help answer the question, “What are you good at?” In “Strengths-Based HPI: A Win-Win for All,” Hawley Kane provides guidance on how to help managers work with their direct reports to determine and develop employee strengths. She discusses what strengths-based HPI is, why and how it works, and how to implement it in your organization. This issue of TD at Work includes: • challenges and benefits of strengths-based HPI • details on the manager’s role in strengths-based HPI • guidance on advising managers on holding one-on-one meetings with their employees • coaching guidelines for managers • a one-on-one meeting agenda template.

Proceedings of the 3rd Ph.D. Retreat of the HPI Research School on Service-oriented Systems Engineering by Meinel, Christoph ,Plattner, Hasso,Döllner, Jürgen,Weske, Mathias,Polze, Andreas,Hirschfeld, Robert,Naumann, Felix,Giese, Holger Pdf

Design and Implementation of service-oriented architectures imposes a huge number of research questions from the fields of software engineering, system analysis and modeling, adaptability, and application integration. Component orientation and web services are two approaches for design and realization of complex web-based system. Both approaches allow for dynamic application adaptation as well as integration of enterprise application. Commonly used technologies, such as J2EE and .NET, form de facto standards for the realization of complex distributed systems. Evolution of component systems has lead to web services and service-based architectures. This has been manifested in a multitude of industry standards and initiatives such as XML, WSDL UDDI, SOAP, etc. All these achievements lead to a new and promising paradigm in IT systems engineering which proposes to design complex software solutions as collaboration of contractually defined software services. Service-Oriented Systems Engineering represents a symbiosis of best practices in object-orientation, component-based development, distributed computing, and business process management. It provides integration of business and IT concerns. The annual Ph.D. Retreat of the Research School provides each member the opportunity to present his/her current state of their research and to give an outline of a prospective Ph.D. thesis. Due to the interdisciplinary structure of the Research Scholl, this technical report covers a wide range of research topics. These include but are not limited to: Self-Adaptive Service-Oriented Systems, Operating System Support for Service-Oriented Systems, Architecture and Modeling of Service-Oriented Systems, Adaptive Process Management, Services Composition and Workflow Planning, Security Engineering of Service-Based IT Systems, Quantitative Analysis and Optimization of Service-Oriented Systems, Service-Oriented Systems in 3D Computer Graphics, as well as Service-Oriented Geoinformatics.

The Rise and Rise of Indicators by Stephen Morse Pdf

This book makes indicators more accessible, in terms of what they are, who created them and how they are used. It examines the subjectivity and human frailty behind these quintessentially ‘hard’ and technical measures of the world. To achieve this goal, The Rise and Rise of Indicators presents the world in terms of a selected set of indicators. The emphasis is upon the origins of the indicators and the motivation behind their creation and evolution. The ideas and assumptions behind the indicators are made transparent to demonstrate how changes to them can dramatically alter the ranking of countries that emerge. They are, after all, human constructs and thus embody human biases. The book concludes by examining the future of indicators and the author sets out some possible trajectories, including the growing emphasis on indicators as important tools in the Sustainable Development Goals that have been set for the world up until 2030. This is a valuable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of economics, sociology, geography, environmental studies, development studies, area studies, business studies, politics and international relations.

Design, User Experience, and Usability. Theory, Methods, Tools and Practice by Aaron Marcus Pdf

The two-volume set LNCS 6769 + LNCS 6770 constitutes the proceedings of the First International Conference on Design, User Experience, and Usability, DUXU 2011, held in Orlando, FL, USA in July 2011 in the framework of the 14th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2011, incorporating 12 thematically similar conferences. A total of 4039 contributions was submitted to HCII 2011, of which 1318 papers were accepted for publication. The total of 154 contributions included in the DUXU proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on DUXU theory, methods and tools; DUXU guidelines and standards; novel DUXU: devices and their user interfaces; DUXU in industry; DUXU in the mobile and vehicle context; DXU in Web environment; DUXU and ubiquitous interaction/appearance; DUXU in the development and usage lifecycle; DUXU evaluation; and DUXU beyond usability: culture, branding, and emotions.
