This book is a concise, accessible problem-based approach to the subject using case scenarios to facilitate students taking their pre-clinical or basic sciences examinations. Using a family of characters in each case scenario, the text reflects the current changes in medical and biomedical science teaching that is increasingly moving towards a more integrated approach through-problem-based learning. The characters, all members of an extended family, appear in several scenarios and the student becomes familiar with their personalities and their disease processes. Each scenario covers the relevant anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, immunology and biochemistry and enables the reader to grasp the key concepts of basic medical sciences in an integrated fashion. Key Features: Takes an integrated approach to the subject to reflect recent changes in medical and biomedical science curriculum Further Study sections to enhance understanding and enable the student to read around the subject Intended learning outcomes included at the beginning of each chapter Trigger Boxes containing key facts and revision questions included throughout to ensure key concepts are fully understood Integrated Medical Sciences: The Essentials is an essential text for first and second year undergraduates taking medical or biomedical sciences (during the pre-clinical phase for medical students.). The book is also an invaluable resource for nursing degree students and allied health students taking courses in dentistry, physiotherapy and pharmacy. In addition, the book is ideal for US and international medical students preparing for the USMLE Step 1 examination.

Educating Physicians by Molly Cooke,David M. Irby,Bridget C. O'Brien Pdf

PRAISE FOR EDUCATING PHYSICIANS "Educating Physicians provides a masterful analysis of undergraduate and graduate medical education in the United States today. It represents a major educational document, based firmly on educational psychology, learning theory, empirical studies, and careful personal observations of many individual programs. It also recognizes the importance of financing, regulation, and institutional culture on the learning environment, which suffuses its recommendations for reform with cogency and power. Most important, like Abraham Flexner's classic study a century ago, the report recognizes that medical education and practice, at their core, are profoundly moral enterprises. This is a landmark volume that merits attention from anyone even peripherally involved with medical education." —Kenneth M. Ludmerer, author, Time to Heal: American Medical Education from the Turn of the Century to the Era of Managed Care "This is a very important book that comes at a critical time in our nation's history. We will not have enduring health care reform in this country unless we rethink our medical education paradigms. This book is a call to arms for doing just that." —George E. Thibault, president, Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation "The authors provide us with the evidence-based model for physician education with associated changes in infrastructure, policy, and our roles as educators. Whether you agree or not with their conclusions, if you are a teacher this book is a must-read as it will frame both what and how we discuss medical education throughout the current century." —Deborah Simpson, associate dean for educational support and evaluation, Medical College of Wisconsin "A provocative book that provides us with a creative vision for medical education. Using in-depth case studies of innovative educational practices illustrating what is actually possible, the authors provide sage advice for transforming medical education on the basis of learning theories and educational research." —Judith L. Bowen, professor of medicine, Oregon Health & Science University

Integrated Basic Surgical Sciences by James Toouli Pdf

Written specifically for trainee surgeons, this is a problem-based approach to the basic sciences. It differs from other books on the subject as it introduces each topic with a problem faced by the surgeon, and then looks at the anatomical, physiological and pathological basis of that particular problem. This is followed by the clinical presentation of the problem, what factors aggravate it and how it should be managed, including relevant surgical techniques. 'Integrated Basic Surgical Sciences' follows the format of the MRCS, AFRCS and Australasian examinations, providing an ideal textbook for candidates.

Bridging the Bed-Bench Gap by National Research Council,Policy and Global Affairs,Board on Higher Education and Workforce,Committee on the Evaluation of the Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust Programs in Biomedical Sciences Pdf

Since the 1970s there has been a serious gap between fundamental biological research and its clinical application. In response to this gap the Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust instituted the General Organizational Grants program, which funded two types of awards to provide training that would bridge the bed-bench gap. These training awards fell into two categories: (1) those that provided significant opportunities for M.D.s to engage in basic research during and immediately following medical school and residency, and (2) those that provided significant clinical exposure for Ph.D.s while they were predoctoral or postdoctoral students. These grants were intended to close the widening gap between rapid advances in our understanding of the biological process and the translation of that knowledge into techniques for preventing diseases. This report examines the General Organizational Grant programs, identifies best practices, and provides observations for future philanthropic funders.

Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships by Alliance for Clinical Education Pdf

Dr. Poncelet and Dr. Hirsh eagerly developed an encyclopedic chapter for the 4th edition of the Guidebook for Clerkship Directors, and it seemed logical and proper to grow that chapter, which had been truncated for the Guidebook, into this book. They have assembled the leading international experts in the field of the medical school longitudinal integrated curriculum, who in turn have generated what we are sure will be considered the ultimate resource for these experiences. This book fills a significant void in the medical education literature.
