South-South in Action by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,United Nations office of South-South cooperation (unossc) Pdf

This publication outlines key features of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) and how FAO has applied SSTC to the delivery of its mission. The case studies presented provide a window on how SSTC has contributed to alleviating hunger and malnutrition in countries across the global South and has helped build resilience in the face of climate change and other development challenges. The lessons learned from these experiences are feeding into the new FAO SSTC Guidelines for Action (2022–2025) and will guide FAO's future results-based SSTC programmes.

Women-led cooperatives support programme by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

"FAO Türkiye’s Women-led cooperatives support programme" booklet offers a multi-faceted look into the role of cooperatives in women’s economic, social, and cultural empowerment. The document is an illuminating exposition on the intersection of gender equality, sustainable development, and agricultural development cooperatives. The booklet dives into FAO's Global Strategy on Women-led Cooperatives, detailing success stories that underscore the transformative power of these cooperatives in rural Turkish communities. The narrative weaves through the framework of FAO's Strategic Objectives, demonstrating how cooperatives serve as a platform for rural women’s empowerment, offering both economic opportunities and a platform for social and cultural engagement. Furthermore, ten of these cooperatives jointly initiated the establishment of a new e-commerce platform, hepyerinden.coop, under the guidance of FAO Türkiye. Hepyerinden.coop aims to enhance market opportunities and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the cooperatives by enabling them to reach a broader customer base by digitalization. This comprehensive resource is designed to appeal to a broad audience, from global development actors to local stakeholders including policymakers, researchers, practitioners in the field of gender and agricultural development, and anyone interested in the intersection of gender equality and sustainable agriculture by illuminating the cooperative model as a force for transformative change. It serves as an educational tool, offering insights into the practical aspects of running and sustaining women-led cooperatives, while also addressing broader themes such as women's rights, economic development, and social justice in the context of Türkiye's evolving cooperative movement. Through its detailed analysis and compelling case studies, the document underscores the vital role of cooperatives in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in the agriculture sector.

Reluctant Partners? Non-Governmental Organizations, the State and Sustainable Agricultural Development by Anthony Bebbington,John Farrington,David J. Lewis,Kate Wellard Pdf

Reluctant Partners? combines comprehensive empirical insights into NGOs' work in agriculture with wider considerations of their relations with the State and their contribution to democratic pluralism. This overview volume for the Non-Governmental Organizations series contextualizes and synthesizes the case study material in the three regional volumes on Africa, Asia and Latin America, where over sixty specially commissioned case studies of farmer-participatory approaches to agricultural innovation are presented. Specific questions are raised. How good/bad are NGOs at promoting technological innovation and addressing contraints to change in peasant culture? How effective are NGOs at strengthening local organizations? How do/will donor pressures influence NGOs and their links to the State?

Food for All by Uma Lele,Manmohan Agarwal,Brian C. Baldwin,Sambuddha Goswami Pdf

This book is a historical review of international food and agriculture since the founding of the international organizations following the Second World War, including the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and into the 1970s, when CGIAR was established and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) was created to recycle petrodollars. Despite numerous international consultations and an increased number of actors, there has been no real growth in international assistance, except for the work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The book concurrently focuses on the structural transformation of developing countries in Asia and Africa, with some making great strides in small farmer development and in achieving structural transformation of their economies. Some have also achieved Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG2, but most have not. Not only are some countries, particularly in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, lagging behind, but they face new challenges of climate change, competition from emerging countries, population pressure, urbanization, environmental decay, and dietary transition. Lagging developing countries need huge investments in human capital, and physical and institutional infrastructure, to take advantage of rapid change in technologies, but the role of international assistance in financial transfers has diminished. The COVID-19 pandemic has not only set many poorer countries back but starkly revealed the weaknesses of past strategies. Transformative changes are needed in developing countries with international cooperation to achieve better outcomes. Will change in the United States bring new opportunities for multilateral cooperation?"--

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021 by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,International Fund for Agricultural Development,United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund,World Food Programme,World Health Organization Pdf

In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation. To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world. In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.

International Organizations in Global Social Governance by Kerstin Martens,Dennis Niemann,Alexandra Kaasch Pdf

International Organizations (IOs) are important actors within global social governance. They provide forums for exchange, contention and cooperation about social policies. Our knowledge about the involvement of IOs varies significantly by policy fields, and we know comparatively little about the specific roles of IOs in social policies. This volume enhances and systematizes our understanding of IOs in global social governance. It provides studies on a variety of social policy fields in which different, but also the same, IOs operate. The chapters shed light on IO involvement in a particular social policy field by describing the population of participating IOs; exploring how a particular global social policy field is constituted as a whole, and which dominant IOs set the trends. The contributors also examine the discourse within, and between, these IOs on the respective social policies. As such, this first-of-its kind book contributes to research on social policy and international relations, both in terms of theoretical substantiation and empirical scope.
