Excerpt from Last Poems: Including Afterglow and Beyond the Sunset The poems contained in this volume were written by my mother, Mrs. Dorr, during the last fifteen years of her life. "Afterglow" was published in 1900, and "Beyond the Sunset" followed in 1909. Nearly half of the poems in the latter volume were written between her eightieth and eighty-fifth birthdays, yet they are seldom retrospective and never regretful. She lived in the present and the future, and reaped from the blessed memories of the past inspiration and incentive to more eager and enthusiastic living. Although she had outlived her generation, she was accorded a place as contemporary with the three generations who had read her poems, for she kept herself so in touch and in sympathy with the younger writers, and with the modern progressive thought of the day, that she did not appear to belong with those of her own age. Her heart was keenly responsive to the call of life, of youth, of love, and of beauty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Just Beyond The Hill is a selection of poetry, and short prose from the poet’s private journals spanning over 25 years. It is an assortment of snap-shots, observations, emotions, memories and moods from both true experience and imagination. Though these poems span years, they are relevant and universal in their scope. As in a photograph album, they are seemingly random in order, where time is frozen in sharp focus, or where the subject is perceived, just out of camera shot. There is a sense of looking “just beyond the hill” to the next horizon.
Sunflowers: A Collection of Poems is a tapestry of actual daily journal entries masked in metaphors and poetry as Douglas finds his own way to get over the hurt of a lost love. To a greater sense, it serves as his personal forum, his therapy, as he reopens old wounds and takes a second look at a past love affair only to discover post mortem what love really means to him. This book is filled with his inner most intimacy, his cryptic pain and his desperate need to hold on to what he earned and lost some time ago. Somewhere along the way, he discovered how to unlock those neatly and hidden away passing thoughts and transform them into something tangible so when he takes a second look at his transcripts, he finds a person almost opposite to what he hopes to reflect in the mirror in front of him. Soon he begins to place a more granular look to the person in the mirror, realizing that love is less about fleeting passion and more about growing and evolving plural than singular. There are also subtle poems to how he finds himself in nature and where he fits into the grand scheme of things. Whether it’s a simple walk on a beach or fields of meadows he seems to carry his thoughts of love with him like lint to a pocket.
