Resilience in South Sudanese Women by Godriver Wanga-Odhiambo Pdf

Resilience in South Sudanese Women describes the historical injustices in Southern Sudan that led to the outbreak of civil wars. These injustices included socio-economic and political marginalization that denied the women basic needs. It gives firsthand life experiences of the Sudanese women during the protracted civil wars in their country. It narrates the horrors of the gruesome journeys that they took as they fled war zone, burying their kids on unmarked graves and moving on. It shows how they dealt with homelessness in host countries through various coping strategies, and their eventual resettlement in USA where again they experienced cultural collisions. However, their determination, innovation, and resilience always helped them to overcome the struggles.

Dreams for Lesotho by John Aerni-Flessner Pdf

In Dreams for Lesotho: Independence, Foreign Assistance, and Development, John Aerni-Flessner studies the post-independence emergence of Lesotho as an example of the uneven ways in which people experienced development at the end of colonialism in Africa. The book posits that development became the language through which Basotho (the people of Lesotho) conceived of the dream of independence, both before and after the 1966 transfer of power. While many studies of development have focused on the perspectives of funding governments and agencies, Aerni-Flessner approaches development as an African-driven process in Lesotho. The book examines why both political leaders and ordinary people put their faith in development, even when projects regularly failed to alleviate poverty. He argues that the potential promise of development helped make independence real for Africans. The book utilizes government archives in four countries, but also relies heavily on newspapers, oral histories, and the archives of multilateral organizations like the World Bank. It will interest scholars of decolonization, development, empire, and African and South African history.

Improving Urban Middle Schools by L. Mickey Fenzel Pdf

Winner of the 2010 Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award in the category of "The Professional Studies" , presented by Association of Jesuit Colleges and University and Alpha Sigma Nu Nativity schools—there are over forty in urban areas throughout the United States—provide an important alternative to urban middle schools failing to provide their students with an adequate education. Nativity schools, which are privately funded, provide a year-round educational experience for at-risk urban children. They feature small classes, an extended day, and attention to students' social and spiritual developmental needs. L. Mickey Fenzel visited eleven Nativity schools in seven cities, conducting interviews and classroom observations, and collecting standardized test scores and survey data. Fenzel examines features of the Nativity model that distinguish it from other educational programs and takes a close look at the controversial use of volunteer teachers. The Nativity model is also discussed with respect to its social justice mission that is rooted in Jesuit tradition.
