Lectures on Ancient Philosophy by Manly Hall Pdf

2021 Reprint of the 1929 Edition. Facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Complete in itself, this volume originated as a commentary and expansion of Manly P. Hall's masterpiece of symbolic philosophy, The Secret Teachings of All Ages. In Lectures on Ancient Philosophy, Manly P. Hall expands on the philosophical, metaphysical, and cosmological themes introduced in previous work. Hall wrote this volume as a reader's companion to his earlier work, intending it for those wishing to delve more deeply into the esoteric philosophies and ideas that undergird the Secret Teachings. A considerable portion of this work is devoted to the rituals and figures of the Greek Mysteries and to the teachings of classical pagan metaphysics in general. The book also discusses ancient Christianity, Rosicrucian and Freemasonic traditions, ancient mysteries, pagan rites and symbols, and Pythagorean mathematics. First published in 1929--the year after the publication of Hall's magnum opus--this edition includes the author's original subject index and twenty diagrams prepared under his supervision for the volume.

Truth, etc. by Jonathan Barnes Pdf

Truth, etc. is a wide-ranging study of ancient logic based upon the John Locke lectures given by the eminent philosopher Jonathan Barnes in Oxford. Its six chapters discuss, first, certain ancient ideas about truth; secondly, the Aristotelian conception of predication; thirdly, various ideas about connectors which were developed by the ancient logicians and grammarians; fourthly, the notion of logical form, insofar as it may be discovered in the ancient texts; fifthly, the question of the 'justification of deduction'; and sixthly, the attitude which has been called logical utilitarianism and which restricts the scope of logic to those forms of inference which are or might be useful for scientific proofs. In principle, the book presupposes no knowledge of logic and no skill in ancient languages: all ancient texts are cited in English translation; and logical symbols and logical jargon are avoided so far as possible. There is no scholarly apparatus of footnotes, and no bibliography. It can be read in an armchair. Anyone interested in ancient philosophy, or in logic and its history, will find it interesting.

What is Ancient Philosophy? by Pierre Hadot Pdf

Hadot shows how the schools, trends, and ideas of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy strove to transform the individual's mode of perceiving and being in the world. For the ancients, philosophical theory and the philosophical way of life were inseparably linked. Hadot asks us to consider whether and how this connection might be reestablished today.

Basic Questions of Philosophy by Martin Heidegger Pdf

“This excellent translation” presents Heidegger’s mature thought on the essence of Truth as he was writing his major work, Contributions to Philosophy (Library Journal). This is the first English translation of a lecture course Martin Heidegger presented at the University of Freiburg in 1937–1938. Heidegger’s task here is to reassert the question of the essence of truth, not as a “problem” or as a matter of “logic,” but precisely as a genuine philosophical question, in fact the one basic question of philosophy. Thus, this course is about the essence of truth as well as the essence of philosophy itself. On both sides Heidegger draws extensively upon the ancient Greeks, on their understanding of truth as aletheia and their determination of the beginning of philosophy as the disposition of wonder. In addition, these lectures were presented at the time that Heidegger was composing his second magnum opus, Beiträge zur Philosophie, and provide the single best introduction to that complex and crucial text.

Lectures on the Philosophy of Mathematics by Joel David Hamkins Pdf

An introduction to the philosophy of mathematics grounded in mathematics and motivated by mathematical inquiry and practice. In this book, Joel David Hamkins offers an introduction to the philosophy of mathematics that is grounded in mathematics and motivated by mathematical inquiry and practice. He treats philosophical issues as they arise organically in mathematics, discussing such topics as platonism, realism, logicism, structuralism, formalism, infinity, and intuitionism in mathematical contexts. He organizes the book by mathematical themes--numbers, rigor, geometry, proof, computability, incompleteness, and set theory--that give rise again and again to philosophical considerations.

Basic Concepts of Ancient Philosophy by Martin Heidegger Pdf

The eminent German philosopher’s unique analysis of Ancient Greek philosophy and its relation to his own pioneering work. Basic Concepts of Ancient Philosophy presents a lecture course given by Martin Heidegger in 1926 at the University of Marburg. The book provides Heidegger’s most systematic history of Ancient philosophy beginning with Thales and ending with Aristotle. In this lecture, which coincides with the completion of his most important work, Being and Time, Heidegger is working out a way to sharply differentiate between beings and Being. Richard Rojcewicz’s clear and accurate translation offers English-speaking readers valuable insight into Heidegger’s views on Ancient thought and concepts such as principle, cause, nature, unity, multiplicity, Logos, truth, science, soul, category, and motion.

Stoic Warriors by Nancy Sherman Pdf

Stoic Warriors explores the relationship between soldiers and Stoic philosophy, exploring what Stoicism actually is, the role it plays in the character of the military (both ancient and modern), and its powerful value as a philosophy of life. Marshalling anecdotes from military history--ranging from ancient Greek wars to World War II, Vietnam, and Iraq--Sherman illuminates the military mind and uses it as a window on the virtues of the Stoic philosophy. Indeed this is a perceptive investigation of what makes Stoicism so compelling not only as a guiding principle for the military, but as a philosophy for anyone facing the hardships of life.

Lectures On The History Of Ancient Philosophy by William Archer Butler Pdf

William Archer Butler (1814?--48) was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Dublin and a founder of the Edinburgh University Magazine, as well as a regular contributor to the periodical from 1833 right up until his death. His writings were on a wide range of subjects ranging from poetry (he was an acquaintance of William Wordsworth) to history, theology and philosophy. Butler's Lectures on the History of Ancient Philosophy was edited after his death with notes by William Hepworth Thompson, a Fellow of Trinity College and writer of editions of Phaedrus (1868) and the Gorgias (1871). The lectures were originally delivered to students at Trinity College, Dublin during Butler's first four years as Professor, and are based on the author's intimate knowledge of the original documents and use of the German histories of philosophy, including that of Ritter. Volume 1 begins with a brief introduction to the subject and also contains a thorough examination of Socrates. To this the editor provides references for additional historical resources. The second volume of Butler's extensive lectures is invaluable to those scholars interested in Plato and the Platonists. Also noteworthy are the sections on Neo-Platonism and the three lectures on Aristotle. Butler's lectures were praised for their wide understanding of the subject matter and their eloquence. This authoritative history of ancient philosophy remains an important and valuable resource for all scholars of the history of ancient philosophy.
