There is no scholarly apparatus of footnotes, and no bibliography. It can be read in an armchair. Anyone interested in ancient philosophy, or in logic and its history, will find it interesting.

William Archer Butler (1814?--48) was Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Dublin and a founder of the Edinburgh University Magazine, as well as a regular contributor to the periodical from 1833 right up until his death. Butler's Lectures on the History of Ancient Philosophy was edited after his death with notes by William Hepworth Thompson, a Fellow of Trinity College and writer of editions of Phaedrus (1868) and the Gorgias (1871).
