Lectures on Elementary Mathematics by Joseph Lagrange Pdf

Joseph Louis Lagrange's lectures in elementary mathematics, like Euler's Elements of Algebra, is readily accessible to the non specialist, but nevertheless of great intrinsic interest and value to the student. Many historical and methodological remarks are woven together with the mathematical material, and the author's chatty style give these lectures a charm that is not often found in mathematical works. Lagrange, of course, added an addendum to Euler's Elements of Algebra, which features a number of important mathematical results and these lectures make an excellent accompiament to Euler's great work. Upper Elementary Mathematics Lessons to Explore, Understand, and Respond to Social Injustice by Tonya Gau Bartell,Cathery Yeh,Mathew D. Felton-Koestler,Robert Q. Berry III Pdf

"A very compelling set of fresh ideas are offered that prepare educators to turn the corner on advocating for social justice in the mathematics classroom. Each book is full of engaging activities, frameworks and standards that centers instruction on community, worldview, and the developmental needs of all students, a must needed resource to reboot our commitment to the next generation." Linda M. Fulmore TODOS: Mathematics For ALL Cave Creek, AZ Empower students to be the change—join the teaching mathematics for social justice movement! We live in an era in which students of all ages have—through media and their lived experiences— a more visceral experience of social injustices. However, when people think of social justice, mathematics rarely comes to mind. With a teacher-friendly design, this book brings upper elementary mathematics content to life by connecting it to student curiosity, empathy, and issues students see or experience. Tested in Grades 3-5 classrooms, the model lessons in this book walk teachers through the process of applying critical frameworks to instruction, using standards-based mathematics to explore, understand, and respond to social justice issues. Learn to plan instruction that engages students in mathematics explorations through age-appropriate, culturally relevant topics, such as valuing differences, health and pay inequality, bullying, voting rights, and environmental justice. Features include: Content cross-referenced by mathematical concept and social issues Connection to Learning for Justice’s social justice standards Downloadable instructional materials and lesson resources Guidance for lessons driven by students’ unique passions and challenges Connections between research and practice Written for teachers committed to developing equitable and just practices through the lens of mathematics content and practice standards as well as social justice standards, this book will help connect content to students’ daily lives, fortify their mathematical understanding, and expose them to issues that will support them in becoming active citizens and leaders.

Lecture Notes on Elementary Topology and Geometry by I.M. Singer,J.A. Thorpe Pdf

At the present time, the average undergraduate mathematics major finds mathematics heavily compartmentalized. After the calculus, he takes a course in analysis and a course in algebra. Depending upon his interests (or those of his department), he takes courses in special topics. Ifhe is exposed to topology, it is usually straightforward point set topology; if he is exposed to geom etry, it is usually classical differential geometry. The exciting revelations that there is some unity in mathematics, that fields overlap, that techniques of one field have applications in another, are denied the undergraduate. He must wait until he is well into graduate work to see interconnections, presumably because earlier he doesn't know enough. These notes are an attempt to break up this compartmentalization, at least in topology-geometry. What the student has learned in algebra and advanced calculus are used to prove some fairly deep results relating geometry, topol ogy, and group theory. (De Rham's theorem, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces, the functorial relation of fundamental group to covering space, and surfaces of constant curvature as homogeneous spaces are the most note worthy examples.) In the first two chapters the bare essentials of elementary point set topology are set forth with some hint ofthe subject's application to functional analysis.

The Legacy of Felix Klein by Gert Schubring,Michael Neubrand,Marta Menghini Pdf

This open access book provides an overview of Felix Klein's ideas, highlighting developments in university teaching and school mathematics related to Klein's thoughts, stemming from the last century. It discusses the meaning, importance and the legacy of Klein's ideas today and in the future, within an international, global context. Presenting extended versions of the talks at the Thematic Afternoon at ICME-13, the book shows that many of Klein's ideas can be reinterpreted in the context of the current situation, and offers tips and advice for dealing with current problems in teacher education and teaching mathematics in secondary schools. It proves that old ideas are timeless, but that it takes competent, committed and assertive individuals to bring these ideas to life. Throughout his professional life, Felix Klein emphasised the importance of reflecting upon mathematics teaching and learning from both a mathematical and a psychological or educational point of view. He also strongly promoted the modernisation of mathematics in the classroom, and developed ideas on university lectures for student teachers, which he later consolidated at the beginning of the last century in the three books on elementary mathematics from a higher standpoint. Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics by Liping Ma Pdf

Studies of teachers in the U.S. often document insufficient subject matter knowledge in mathematics. Yet, these studies give few examples of the knowledge teachers need to support teaching, particularly the kind of teaching demanded by recent reforms in mathematics education. Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics describes the nature and development of the knowledge that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such knowledge seems more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts. The anniversary edition of this bestselling volume includes the original studies that compare U.S and Chinese elementary school teachers’ mathematical understanding and offers a powerful framework for grasping the mathematical content necessary to understand and develop the thinking of school children. Highlighting notable changes in the field and the author’s work, this new edition includes an updated preface, introduction, and key journal articles that frame and contextualize this seminal work.
