Legends of the Rhine (Classic Reprint) by Wilhelm Ruland Pdf

Excerpt from Legends of the Rhine Then the sound of a melodious female voice Speaking the English language fell On my ears. I looked round. A girl was bending over a book, and entertaining her father and mother by reading something of Special interest and beauty. I listened and recognised some of my own sentences rendered into the speech of Shakespeare. These three were learning to feel the glamour of the Lorelei legend as I had felt it. I confess my pulse beat quicker as I heard my poor endeavours highly praised, and I could not refrain from advancing and thanking the young reader for her kindly appreciation. She seemed delighted when she discovered that I was the author, and rose to greet me in the most amiable manner. I complimented the travellers on the fact, that during the last century the Rhine seemed to have become for the English people that home of romance which we Germans sought to find in Italy. The girl smiled, and remarked that I must pay that compliment to her mother in particular, as she was by birth an English woman. But the head of the family hastened to add that among Americans, whom he might speak for, the enthusiasm for the beauties of the Rhine was not less than among their anglo-saxon cousins. These two nations which are bound by so many ties to each other, and also to ourselves, were thus represented before me. The English-speaking people undoubtedly form by far the largest contingent of our Rhine travellers, and it was pleasant indeed to receive so fine a testimonial to the beauties of my homeland. Hero Tales and Legends of the Rhine (Classic Reprint) by Lewis Spence Pdf

Excerpt from Hero Tales and Legends of the Rhine But it is not contended that because greater space and freedom of narrative scope than is usual has been taken by the author the volume would not prove itself an accept able companion upon a voyage on Rhine waters under taken in holiday times Of peace. Indeed, every attempt has been made so to arrange the legends that they will illustrate a Rhine journey from sea to source - the manner in which the majority Of visitors to Germany will make the voyage - and to this end the tales have been marshalled in such form that a reader sitting on the deck of a Rhine steamer may be able to peruse the legends relating to the various localities in their proper order as he passes them. There are included, however, several tales relating to places which cannot be viewed from the deck of a steamer, but which may be visited at the cost of a short inland ex cursion. These are such as from their celebrity could not be omitted from any work on the legends of Rhineland, but they are few in number. Much of the matter for this book was collected on the spot, or at least at the scene of the occurrences related. This volume is something more than a mere compilation, and when it is further stated that only the most characteristic and original versions and variants of the many tales here given have gained admittance into the collection, its value will become apparent. The Legends of the Rhine by F. J. Kiefer Pdf

Excerpt from The Legends of the Rhine: From Basle to Rotterdam On the Rhine blooms fine life! From the Destruction's dust, The Ancestor's spirits strife, Which long were the Graves' rust; And songs there resound With harmonious stream, In the spirit again found, And again must I dream. See I the birds flying High the blue air through, See I the ships striving In distant grey-fog anew, Is me, as if in flight The birds words sing, As in quick despite To ships others cling. Spirit-words on the moor And quick moving flood; There round the Convent-door, Where Pilgrims once stood - And the Ivy branch waves, So high and sadly wild Binds tendrils round the graves There tone fairy songs so mild. Legends of the Rhine by Thomas Colley Grattan Pdf

Excerpt from Legends of the Rhine: And of the Low Countries The following stories were gathered from various sources, and Some of them freely adapted from the literature of the countries where the scenes are laid. Brabant and Flanders, so fertile in subjects of romantic history, and of which the author has availed himself in previous productions, have furnished materials for some of those included in the present publication. The "Bijdragen tot het oude Strafregt in Belgie," and the "Chroniques et Traditions Surnaturelles de la Flandre," works not readily accessible in England, have been freely borrowed from; and in selecting from the German Legendary Tales the authors chief object was to pass over such as turned on magic and enchantment, and to choose those which embodied motives or passions merely mortal. He has admitted but one exception to this rule; and that only because human feeling was there predominant over fairy spells. One of the Rhine Stories had been already made the subject of a poem, the author's earliest literary attempt, and which he soon suppressed. For one or two others contained in the present volume, it might not be easy to give any other authority. But it is hoped they will be read with that confiding good faith which prefers taking things for granted to sifting evidence or comparing proofs. The Rhine by W. O. Von Horn Pdf

Excerpt from The Rhine: History and Legends of Its Castles, Abbeys, Monasteries, and Towns As I have written chiefly for the educated reader, and more especially for those who for many years have ex pressed favourable Opinons of my other works, it has been my aim to give true and faithful narrations of theresult of my researches, without, the perhaps important, ballast of quotations, in such a form as to satisfy the demand for amusement, and to do justice to local legen dary lore. The Heidenmauer Or the Benedictines by James Fenimore Cooper Pdf

Excerpt from The Heidenmauer or the Benedictines: A Legend of the Rhine It would be injustice to the ancient Bishopric of Liege to pass its beautiful scenery without a comment. The country possesses nearly every requisite for the milder and more rural sort of landscape - isolated and innumerable farm houses, herds in the fields, living hedges, a waving surface, and a verdure to rival the emerald. By a happy accident, the road runs for miles on an elevated ridge, enabling the traveller to enjoy these beauties at his ease. At aix-la-chapelle we bathed, visited the relics, saw the scene of so many coronations of emperors of more or less renown, sat in the chair of Charlemagne, and went our way. Ballads a Legend of the Rhine, Etc (Classic Reprint) by William Makepeace Thackeray Pdf

Excerpt from Ballads a Legend of the Rhine, Etc Ballads. The Chronicle of The Drum. At Paris, hard by the Maine barriers, Whoever will choose to repair, Midst a dozen of wooden-legged warriors May haply fall in with old Pierre. On the sunshiny bench of a tavern He sits and he prates of old wars, And moistens his pipe of tobacco With a drink that is named after Mars. The beer makes his tongue run the quicker, And as long as his tap never fails, Thus over his favourite liquor Old Peter will tell his old tales. Says he, "In my life's ninety summers Strange changes and chances I've seen, - So here's to all gentlemen drummers That ever have thumped on a skin. "Brought up in the art military For four generations we are; My ancestors drummed for King Harry, The Huguenot lad of Navarre. And as each man in life has his station According as Fortune may fix, While Conde was waving the baton, My grandsire was trolling the sticks. River Legends by Edward Hugessen Knatchbull-Hugessen Pdf

Excerpt from River Legends: Or Father Thames and Father Rhine On the particular day of which I speak, I had rambled about with those boys I knew, gathered as much pleasure as I could from the memories which clung around the precincts of the old college, and afterwards strolled out along the banks of the river in the direction of Surly. The weather being rather hot, although even ing was approaching, I thought it well to halt in the immediate neighbourhood of Surly Hall, and having seated myself in the shadiest place I could find, began to think over the various Fourths of June and Elec tion Saturdays which I had witnessed in that famous locality, until I not unnaturally fell fast asleep. I do not know how long I remained in this comfortable state, but I was suddenly aroused by the sound of voices, and immediately opened my eyes and looked around to dis cover the quarter from which they proceeded. It was not long before I was enlightened upon this point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
