Dans l’Antiquité tardive, les jeux et les spectacles furent une composante de l’identité culturelle romaine et en même temps, ils furent plus que cela. En effet, les rituels et le cérémonial des ludi étaient si essentiels pour l’existence de l’Empire que les empereurs chrétiens eux-mêmes ne voulurent ou ne purent les abolir. Dans un temps de déprise des spectacles en Gaule, aux 3e-4e siècles, des ludi circenses, des jeux du cirque, continuèrent à être donnés à Trèves, Vienne, Arles, des cités qui étaient résidences impériales. Lors des {ludi scaenici}, bien souvent, les spectacles de pantomime et de mime mirent en scène des thèmes religieux, païens, juifs, chrétiens. Dans l’Italie ostrogothique et l’Afrique vandale où la tradition romaine des spectacles perdura, certains intellectuels comme Luxorius de Carthage se firent les chantres des spectacles romains ; d’autres comme Cassiodore essayèrent de concilier les spectacles et le christianisme, par le biais d’une virtuosité littéraire et culturelle.

In order to compare horse racing cultures from completely different epochs and regions, the authors respond to a series of core issues which serve as structural comparative parameters. The Fall of Constantinople (1453) has been emphasized as an important factor in Biondo's advocacy of Roman civilization in this work.
