Making Policing More Affordable by George Gascon Pdf

Public expenditure on policing in the U.S. more than quadrupled between 1982 and 2006. This report tries to create space for a careful conversation about the challenge of paying for policing. It starts by asking two questions. First, what is driving up police expend.? Are police departments growing and providing more services to more people, are the costs of providing these same services simply going up, or are other factors responsible for the increase? Second, what have cities and their residents received in return for their investment in policing? Are there fewer crimes, a greater sense of safety and more satisfaction with police services? What has happened to the bottom line in policing? Illus. This is a print on demand report.

Mending Broken Fences Policing: An Alternative Model for Policy Management by Anil Anand, BPHE, LLM, MBA, GEMBA Pdf

Police services across the globe are increasingly perceived as heavy handed, racist, and unnecessarily violent. As a result, large, sometimes even national demonstrations have been waged against police policy and strategy. Mending Broken Fences Policing provides a discussion on contemporary policing, the role of policing in modern society, and its relationship to the diverse communities represented in a postmodern world. Mending Broken Fences Policing provides a model, based on social cohesion and police intervention, intelligence-led and community policing (IP-CP); which, supplemented by a quality/quantity/crime (QQC) framework provide a four-step process for viewing policing services from a vantage point beyond Broken Windows and StatCom.

Enhancing Police Service Delivery by James F. Albrecht,Garth den Heyer Pdf

Contemporary police service delivery and performance are complex phenomena. Law enforcement, particularly at the local level, must therefore face the additional challenges of globalization, cybercrime, counter-terrorism and calls for reform, at a time when extreme budgetary constraints are being implemented. Policing operations encompass multiple critical tasks and responsibilities not routinely measured and evaluated, such as response to incidents involving medical assistance, homelessness, mental illness, community engagement, and neighborhood problem-solving endeavors. This volume aims to provide government, criminal justice and policing administrators, policy makers and criminal justice scholars and researchers with comprehensive analyses of the critical issues impacting the challenges inherent in providing effectual public safety, security and service, all from a global perspective. It takes into account popular criticism, extreme budgetary constraints, and the relatively novel and overwhelming challenges of terrorism and cybercrime. The book merges study and practice to identify avenues to best serve community interests, ensure organizational success, and enhance public confidence in policing and in rule of law.

Cities for Life by Jason Corburn Pdf

In cities around the world, planning and health experts are beginning to understand the role of social and environmental conditions that lead to trauma. By respecting the lived experience of those who were most impacted by harms, some cities have developed innovative solutions for urban trauma. In Cities for Life, public health expert Jason Corburn shares lessons from three of these cities: Richmond, California; Medellín, Colombia; and Nairobi, Kenya. Corburn draws from his work with citizens, activists, and decision-makers in these cities over a ten-year period, as individuals and communities worked to heal from trauma--including from gun violence, housing and food insecurity, poverty, and other harms. Cities for Life is about a new way forward with urban communities that rebuilds our social institutions, practices, and policies to be more focused on healing and health.

Ending the Scandal of Complacency by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Transport Committee Pdf

Although road accident deaths have halved between 1958 and 2007 whilst the number of licensed motor vehicles and vehicle mileage covered increased by 400 per cent, the current rate of 3,000 deaths and 250,000 injuries is still an unacceptably high level. Road accidents are the largest single cause of death for people between the ages of 5 and 35 in Britain, and road accidents cost our economy some £18 billion each year. The number of deaths and injuries on roads far outweighs the deaths and injuries in other transport modes, and should be viewed as a major public health problem. The Government should establish a British Road Safety Survey to track overall casualty and safety trends, and review current methods for recording road-traffic injuries. The Committee recommends a systems approach to road safety: ensuring the vehicle, the road infrastructure, regulations and driver training are designed to similar safety and performance standards. Other recommendations include: more 20 mph speed limits; a more proactive approach to determining the safety benefits of new vehicle technologies; action on young drivers - who represent a disproportionate risk to road users - and vulnerable users: motorcyclists, elderly and child pedestrians and cyclists, horse riders; a higher priority given to enforcement of drink-drive and drug-drive offences. The Committee recommends the establishment of an independent Road Safety Commission with powers to work across the whole of government, ensuring that a high priority and adequate resources are given to road safety and that all government departments and agencies give active support. The Government should also establish a road accident investigation branch, like those in aviation, rail and marine.

The Police Manager by Egan K. Green,Ronald G. Lynch,Scott R. Lynch Pdf

The Police Manager provides a roadmap for the challenges that police administrators face in their day-to-day duties, including considerations for dealing with subordinate officers and for interacting with the public. Covering a wide range of topics, from fiscal management to use-of-force policies, this text prepares readers for the tasks that police managers are confronted with. Readers benefit by gaining a thorough understanding of the complexities involved in an occupation that creates demands from the public, from public officials, and from other police officers. The book delivers information on these issues, with chapters dedicated to leadership styles and planning for leadership loss, as well civil liability considerations. New material in this edition covers specific challenges for small and underexamined police agencies such as university police departments. The Police Manager is an ideal textbook for college students hoping to work in police administration in the future, and is useful for current police managers who know that their jobs require a constant influx of ideas for overcoming new challenges.
