Malheur's Legacy by Carla D. Burnside Pdf

Through eye-opening analysis of the role of debt in American history, a renowned finance expert and three-term Democratic mayor of Houston illuminates how debt now threatens our future Bill White is a fiscally conservative politician with progressive principles. In America’s Fiscal Constitution, he tells the story of generations of leaders, beginning with our founding fathers, who established clear limits on federal debt—a remarkable tradition that suddenly collapsed. For over 180 years the U.S. government borrowed only to preserve the union, expand and link federal territory, wage war, and plug temporary budget holes during economic downturns. Federal leaders then imposed tax rates that reduced the burden of debt once the emergency need passed. But since 2000, the federal government has borrowed to pay for routine operating expenses, and the traditional link between spending and taxation has been broken. White dispels common myths and highlights practical lessons gleaned from prior struggles to balance the budget. The profiles in courage he provides of past budget leaders highlight the type of leadership missing today. America’s Fiscal Constitution provides a sorely needed—and hopeful—historical context in the debate on a pressing contemporary problem.

The Life and Legacy of Sir Anthony Panizzi, K.C.B. by Louis Fagan Pdf

Anthony Panizzi (1797-1879), was a naturalised British librarian of Italian birth and an Italian patriot. He was the Principal Librarian of the British Museum from 1856 to 1866. Apart from being a personal friend of British Prime ministers Lord Palmerston and William Ewart Gladstone, Panizzi conducted an active correspondence with Sardinian, and later Italian Prime Minister Count Camillo Benso di Cavour. In 1844, he assisted Giuseppe Mazzini, then in exile in London, by publishing an influential article denouncing the practice ordered by the Home Secretary of ordering Mazzini's private letters opened by the Post Office and giving copies of their contents to the Austrian Embassy. He also orchestrated a visit of Giuseppe Garibaldi to England, and convinced Gladstone to travel to Naples to view personally the inhumane conditions in which political prisoners were kept. Panizzi was a strong advocate of free and equal access to learning. He was influential in enforcing the Copyright Act of 1842, which required British publishers to deposit with the library a copy of every book printed in Britain. For his extraordinary services as a librarian, in 1869 he was knighted by Queen Victoria. In addition to his English knighthood, Panizzi was given an honorary degree by Oxford University, the Légion d'Honneur from France, various chivalric honours from the Italian Government and Crown, and in 1868 was appointed as a senator in the Italian Parliament.

G. W. F. Hegel by Michael Baur Pdf

The thought of G. W. F. Hegel (1770 -1831) has had a deep and lasting influence on a wide range of philosophical, political, religious, aesthetic, cultural and scientific movements. But, despite the far-reaching importance of Hegel's thought, there is often a great deal of confusion about what he actually said or believed. G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts provides an accessible introduction to both Hegel's thought and Hegel-inspired philosophy in general, demonstrating how his concepts were understood, adopted and critically transformed by later thinkers. The first section of the book covers the principal philosophical themes in Hegel's system: epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, ethical theory, political philosophy, philosophy of nature, philosophy of art, philosophy of religion, philosophy of history and theory of the history of philosophy. The second section covers the main post-Hegelian movements in philosophy: Marxism, existentialism, pragmatism, analytic philosophy, hermeneutics and French poststructuralism. The breadth and depth of G. W. F. Hegel: Key Concepts makes it an invaluable introduction for philosophical beginners and a useful reference source for more advanced scholars and researchers.

The Callas Legacy by John Ardoin Pdf

John Ardoin analyzes every recording made by Maria Callas, the most influential of twentieth-century opera singers and one of the most prolific recording artists of all time. John Ardoin's expert recommendations in this biography through sound will guide both opera neophyte and opera fanatic to the best of Callas' many recordings, all of which have been reissued on compact disc, including the legendary live performances captured on so-called pirate recordings, and Ardoin also specifies which live versions have the best sound. With a new epilogue, analysis of newly discovered performances discussed in no other book, previously unpublished photographs, as well as an essay on Callas by playwright Terrence McNally written especially for this compact disc edition, the Callas Legacy remains, as Beverly Sills says, the only book on the soprano "completely worthy of her artistry."--Back cover.

Legacy of Night by Ellen S. Fine Pdf

Ellen Fine's book is full of original insights, beautifully written and structured. I could not put it down. It is a very important study." -- Rosette Lamont, Queens College and Graduate School, City University of New York "By treating Wiesel's novels as literary-spiritual stages in the development of Wiesel's larger experience, as a survivor-witness-writer, Dr. Fine's book takes on an inherently dramatic character which makes it alive and exciting as well as instructive." -- Terrence Des Pres, Colgate University "Fine clarifies Wiesel's intentions, especially illuminating the complex variations on the themes of speech and silence, fathers and sons, escape and return--in short, the ideas around which Wiesel organizes his literary universe. No one has done this before so thoroughly." -- Lawrence Langer, Simmons College

The Psychological Legacy of Slavery by Benjamin P. Bowser,Aimé Charles-Nicolas Pdf

This collection of essays surveys the practices, behaviors, and beliefs that developed during slavery in the Western Hemisphere, and the lingering psychological consequences that continue to impact the descendants of enslaved Africans today. The psychological legacies of slavery highlighted in this volume were found independently in Brazil, the U.S., Belize, Jamaica, Colombia, Haiti, and Martinique. They are color prejudice, self and community disdain, denial of trauma, black-on-black violence, survival crime, child beating, underlying African spirituality, and use of music and dance as community psychotherapy. The effects on descendants of slave owners include a belief in white supremacy, dehumanization of self and others, gun violence, and more. Essays also offer solutions for dealing with this vast psychological legacy. Knowledge of the continuing effects of slavery has been used in psychotherapy, family, and group counseling of African slave descendants. Progress in resolving these legacies has been made as well using psychohistory, forensic psychiatry, family social histories, and community mental health. This knowledge is crucial to eventual reconciliation and resolution of the continuing legacies of slavery and the slave trade.
