Excerpt from A Brief Latin Grammar The author of this book feels that there is an impera tive need for such a brief manual of Latin Grammar as the French, and, more particularly, the Germans, have had for years. Such a manual, intended primarily for use in secondary schools, can be made brief by omitting excep tional usages and by reducing the usual array of quotations to a minimum. It can be simplified by stating the leading facts of the language clearly and concisely. The present work, designed to cover the ground mentioned, is largely the outgrowth of practical experience in the class-room. Everywhere the effort has been made to state material points only, and to give these in the simplest and most direct way. The work has been further condensed and simplified by the use of typographical devices in the form of summaries and tables. The examples given are few, and are taken from the classics usually read first by the student. It is assumed that a single example which clearly illustrates the principle stated is worth more to the student than a number of sentences on no one of which his attention is concentrated. Excerpt from A Manual of Latin Grammar: For the Use of Schools; Intended Especially as a First Grammar; And to Be Used Preparatory to the Study of the More Copious and Complete Grammar of Andrews and Stoddard A main object in the present work was, to furnish an easy introduction to the more full and complete Grammar of Andrews and Stoddard. For this purpose, care has been taken to retain in the Manual, as far as practicable, the same phraseology, the same illustrations, the same divisions and subdivisions contained in the Grammar; so that when the scholar shall enter upon the study of the larger work he will not be perplexed by meeting familiar principles in a new garb, or a new place, but will find the knowledge already ac quired, and the rules already learned, meeting and cheering him, like old friends, at every step of his further progress. It has been thought best to retain so much of the Gram-3 mar as may be required in reading the several works of the series edited by the late Dr. Andrews, viz. Latin Exercises, Latin Reader, Viri Romae, Caesar's Commentaries, Sallust and Ovid. Excerpt from Latin Grammar IN response to the demand for a Shorter Latin Grammar based on the gildersleeve-lodge work of 1894 the fol lowing manual has been prepared. Historical detail and grammatical exposition intended for advanced students mainly have been discarded, and the phraseology has been simplified wherever it seemed possible without a sacrifice of scientific exactness. Still greater abridgment might have been more in accordance with methods that are in vogue just now; but a grammar that shall serve the average student throughout his course in school or college can not be reduced to a skeleton, and we have not been able to gain our own consent to save space by limiting the illustra tive examples to lean and meaningless sentences, holding as we do that the pupil ought to have something more to remember than a mere group of words. Much attention has been paid to the typography, and by retaining the old section-numbers (as has been done except in the list of verbs, 137 - 165) the parallel use of the larger and the smaller grammars has been facilitated. In conclusion, we desire to express our obligations to Dr. W. Gordon mccabe, Headmaster of the University School, Richmond, Va., who has read the book in proof-sheets and has given us the advantage of his scholarly criticisms and to Mr. Charles W. Bain, Headmaster of the Sewanee Grammar School in the University of the South, who has also read all the proof-sheets and given material assistance in adapting the book to the wants of younger students.
