The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes Pdf

A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Sites of Memory in Spain and Latin America by Marina Llorente,Marcella Salvi,Aída Díaz de León Pdf

Sites of Memory in Spain and Latin America isa collection of essays that explores historical memory at the intersection of political, cultural, social, and economic forces in the contexts of Spain and Latin America. The essays here focus on a variety of forms of memory—from the most concrete to the performative—that resist forgetting and unite individuals against hegemonic memory. The volume comprises four thematic sections that focus on Chile, Spain, Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. Keeping in line with the concept informing this collection, that the past returns politically to haunt the present, the four sections move from the contemporary context to the colonial and pre-Columbian eras in Latin America. For all its diversity, the researchers’ interdisciplinary methodology displayed in this collection brings to light processes that would otherwise have remained illegible under a more narrow interpretative approach to historical memory. This volume focuses on the processes of remembering in geographies that have been transformed by violence and conflict in Spain and Latin America. In the cases investigated witnessing, trauma, and testimony speak to the urgency of truth and justice; historical memory, therefore, is ultimately a political act.

Mrs P's Journey by Sarah Hartley Pdf

MRS P'S JOURNEY is the enchanting story of Phyllis Pearsall. Born Phyllis Isobella Gross, her lifelong nickname was PIG. The artist daughter of a flamboyant Hungarian Jewish immigrant, and an Irish Italian mother, her bizarre and often traumatic childhood did not restrain her from becoming one of Britain's most intriguing entrepreneurs and self-made millionaires. After an unsatisfactory marriage, Phyllis, a thirty-year-old divorcee, had to support herself and so became a portrait painter. It is doing this job and trying to find her patron's houses that Phyllis became increasingly frustrated at the lack of proper maps of London. Instead of just cursing the fact as many fellow Londoners probably did, Phyllis decided to do something about it. Without hesitation she covered London's 23,000 streets on foot during the course of one year, often leaving her Horseferry Road bedsit at dawn to do so. To publish the map, and in light of its enormous success, she sets up her own company, The Geographer's Trust, which still publishes the London A-Z and that of every major British city. MRS P'S JOURNEY is the account of a strong, independent woman who has left behind an enduring legacy.

The Blizzard by Roger Quam Pdf

The alumni of a senior high school class are invited to their first reunion-the 25th. Each is asked to write a biography of their life along with memories, good and bad. The 12 students attended all 12 grades together in the small rural town of Mozart, North Dakota, with 6 of the students from in town and 6 from a nearby Hutterite colony. The difference in traditions and culture posed some problems for both students and teachers. The class reunion is to be held in the converted Mozart Grade School Bed and Breakfast, is scheduled for the middle of December, and with bad weather always a risk. An unexpected 2-day blizzard snow bounds almost everyone. In the process everyone and everything comes out safe with many unresolved situations from the past being dealt with, as are unresolved romances and broken marriages. The reunion ends with several surprises. Roger Quam lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He enjoys gardening, writing, classical music, and church work. In 1963 he met Martha on a Greyhound bus and they have been happily married for forty-seven years. They have four children, two grandchildren and attend Prairie Hills Covenant Church in Sioux Falls. He attended the U of Minn. and has had four careers: managing in various industries, owning a business, and working at a Christian rescue mission. He retired in 2006 from Citibank. In 2003 he was one of twenty navy dads invited to spend four days with their sons on the USS Michigan Trident Submarine on a Tiger Cruise. Roger has authored three novels The Road To Gambela, and The Tiger Cruise, all published by Xulon Press.

Historical Reenactment by Mario Carretero,Brady Wagoner,Everardo Perez-Manjarrez Pdf

Long dismissed as the domain of hobbyists and obsessives, historical reenactment—the dramatization of past events using costumed actors and historical props—has only in recent years attracted serious attention from scholars. Drawing on examples from around the world, Historical Reenactment offers a fascinating, interdisciplinary exploration of this cultural phenomenon. With particular attention to reenactment’s social and pedagogical dimensions, it develops a robust definition of what the practice constitutes, considers what methodological approaches are most appropriate, and places it alongside museums and memorial sites as an object of analysis.
