McLuhan's Canary by Bruce Meyer Pdf

If we are to live in this world and share in its experience, we must have patience. In McLuhan's Canary, Bruce Meyer examines the questions of how we wait to find love, why we love and show courage to the people and things that are important to us, and how we find purpose in the small, commonplace, and almost insignificant things that help us to endure with dignity. In these poems, paeans to the virtue of patience, Meyer listens as the world sings to us and awakens us to the perpetuity and strength in which we live and love.

McLuhan: A Guide for the Perplexed by W. Terrence Gordon Pdf

Marshall McLuhan was dubbed a media guru when he came to prominence in the 1960s. The Woodstock generation found him cool; their parents found him perplexing. By 1963, McLuhan was Director of the Centre for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto and would be a public intellectual on the international stage for more than a decade, then linked forever to his two best known coinages: the global village and the medium is the message. Taken as a whole, McLuhan's writings reveal a profound coherence and illuminate his unifying vision for the study of language, literature, and culture, grounded in the broad understanding of any medium or technology as an extension of the human body. McLuhan: A Guide for the Perplexed is a close reading of all of his work with a focus on tracing the systematic development of his thought. The overriding objective is to clarify all of McLuhan's thinking, to consolidate it in a fashion which prevents misreading, and to open the way to advancing his own program: ensuring that the world does not sleepwalk into the twenty-first century with nineteenth-century perceptions.

Yet McLuhan's ideas anticipated a world of media in motion, and its impact on our lives on the dawn of the new millennium. Extraordinary Canadians: Marshall McLuhan by Douglas Coupland Pdf

The importance of Marshall McLuhan and his communication theories cannot be overstated, but his written works—dense, at times even daunting—are more often cited than read. Nonetheless, his predictions have been borne out: in the early 1960s, McLuhan wrote that visual, individualistic print culture would be replaced by what he called "electronic interdependence," creating a new "global village" characterized by a collective identity with a tribal base. Novelist Douglas Coupland regards the celebrated academic as primarily an artist, a kind of performance artist offering profound but sometimes obscure insights into how technology was reshaping the world and its inhabitants. Coupland—prolific novelist, sculptor, visual artist, theatre performer—is a true child of McLuhan, whose body of work examines and often embodies McLuhan's famous aphorism that "the medium is the message." Written with his trademark humour and brilliance, Coupland's McLuhan is a revelation.

Media Research by Marshall McLuhan,Michel A. Moos Pdf

Herbert Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) received his PhD in English literature from Cambridge University and taught in the United States and Canada. He is best known, however, as the founding father of media studies. McLuhan was Director of the Center for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto. Among his ground-breaking works on the psychic and social dimensions of communication technology are The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962); Understanding Media: the Extensions of Man (1964); and The Medium Is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects (1967). Michel Moos' premise is that Marshall McLuhan's importance derives from his achievements in rethinking the entire process of education and training itself, not with his popular fame as media guru, and he analyzes McLuhan's work from the feedback effect his vision continues to provide, rather than from the perspective of interpreting McLuhan's pronouncements on the electronic media. Moos contrasts McLuhan's thoughts with those of such thinkers as Roland Barthes, Fredric Jameson, Friedrich Kittler, Donna Haraway, and Deleuze and Guattari, and renders an updated account of the effect of the mass media on our society and ourselves. The concept "the medium is the message" is the hub around which Marshall McLuhan's explorations revolved. McLuhan's interests ranged from sixteenth-century literature to twentieth-century business practices. With wit and literary flair, he reported the media's influence on society and on the individual. He concluded that we could not escape being transformed by the forces that are hidden deeply within the electronic telecommunications revolution of the sixties. For McLuhan, the new mediums of film, television, and the emerging realm of the digital were the modern equivalent of Gutenberg's printing press. Essays by M. McLuhan. Edited and with a Commentary by M.A. Moos.

McLuhan for Beginners by W. Terrence Gordon Pdf

Despite the fact that many have buried him prematurely like some madman in an Edgar Allen Poe story, Marshall McLuhan was, and is, one of the most brilliant and original thinkers of the 20th century. McLuhan pioneered the study of Media, unified Art and Science, and warned readers about this televised, computerised world. In the wake of the centennial celebration of McLuhan's life, it is appropriate to bring back the basics of his teachings. This book culminates in a rich translation of McLuhan's examination of how media turned the planet into the Global Village.
