Flow Phenomena in Nature: Inspiration, learning and application by R. Liebe Pdf

Do we have an adequate understanding of fluid dynamics phenomena in nature and evolution, and what physical models do we need? What can we learn from nature to stimulate innovations in thinking as well as in engineering applications? Concentrating on flight and propulsion, this unique and accessible book compares fluid dynamics solutions in nature with those in engineering. The respected international contributors present up-to-date research in an easy to understand manner, giving common viewpoints from fields such as zoology, engineering, biology, fluid mechanics and physics. This transdisciplinary approach eliminates barriers and opens wider perspectives to both of the challenging questions above. Contents: Applications in Engineering and Medicine; Inspiration from Nature; Steady and Unsteady Fluid Dynamics; Specific Numerical and Experimental Methods

Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments - 2 by F. Martelli,W. Rodi Pdf

Today understanding turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling flow problems in engineering. Powerful computers and numerical methods are now available for solving flow equations, but the simulation of turbulence effects, which are nearly always important in practice, are still at an early stage of development. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulence momentum, heat and mass transfer. The 89 papers, including 5 invited papers, in this volume present and discuss new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. The high standard of the contributions on the developing and testing of turbulent models attests to the world-wide interest this domain is currently attracting from researchers.

Fluid Mechanics Measurements by R. Goldstein Pdf

This revised edition provides updated fluid mechanics measurement techniques as well as a comprehensive review of flow properties required for research, development, and application. Fluid-mechanics measurements in wind tunnel studies, aeroacoustics, and turbulent mixing layers, the theory of fluid mechanics, the application of the laws of fluid mechanics to measurement techniques, techniques of thermal anemometry, laser velocimetry, volume flow measurement techniques, and fluid mechanics measurement in non-Newtonian fluids, and various other techniques are discussed.

Fundamentals of Hot Wire Anemometry by Charles G. Lomas Pdf

This 1985 book provides a summary of the theory and practice of the hot wire anemometer, an instrument used to measure the speed of fluid flow. Many techniques and uses of this instrument are discussed in detail. The author considers such topics as probe fouling, probe design, and circuit design, as well as the thermodynamics of heated wires and thin films. He also discusses measurements of turbulence, shear flows, vorticity, temperature, combined temperature and velocity, two-phase flows, and compressible flows for measurements in air, water, mercury, blood, glycerine, oil, luminous gases, and polymer solutions. The book concludes with a section on the pulsed wire anemometer and other wake-sensing anemometers. This book assumes a familiarity with basic fluid mechanics. However, mathematical descriptions occur near the end of each chapter thus allowing those with a limited mathematical background to make use of the practical details at the beginning of each chapter.

Turbulent Shear Flows 6 by Jean-Claude Andre,Jean Cousteix,Franz Durst,Brian E. Launder,Frank W. Schmidt,James H. Whitelaw Pdf

Since the inaugural symposium at the Pennsylvania State University in 1977, the venues for the series of biennial symposia on turbulent shear flows have alternated between the USA and Europe. For the Sixth Symposium, the first to be held in France, the city of Toulouse proved a natura] choice, being a centre for the aerospace industry, meteorological research and higher education. The meeting was hosted by the Paul Sabatier University on the southern perimeter of the city, and there nearly 300 workers in the field of turbulence converged to pronounce upon, debate and absorb the current issues in turbulent shear flows and to enjoy the unfailing September sunshine. The meeting had attracted more than 200 offers of papers from which just over 100 full papers and about 20 shorter communications in open forums could be accommodated. The present volume contains 28 of the original symposium presentations selected by the editors. Each contribution has been revised by its authors - sometimes quite extensively -in the light of the oral presentation. It is our hope that the selection provides a substantial statement of permanent interest on current research in the five areas covered by this book, i.e. fundamentals and closures, scalar transport and geophysical flows, aerodynamic flows, complex flows, and numerical simulations.
