Medicine-by-Post by Wayne Wild Pdf

Medicine-by-Post is an interdisciplinary study that will engage readers both in the history of medicine and the eighteenth-century novel. The correspondence from the large private practices of James Jurin, George Cheyne, and William Cullen opens a unique window on the doctor–patient relationship in England and Scotland from this period. The letters, many previously unpublished, reveal a changing rhetoric that mirrors contemporary shifts in medical theory and the patient’s self-image. Medicine-by-Post uncovers the strategies of self-representation by both healers and patients, and reinterprets the meaning of illness and the medical encounter in eighteenth-century literature in the light of true-life experience. The tension between the patient’s personal needs and the doctor’s professional will presents a ready metaphor for the novelist, depicting the social expectations placed upon the individual as well as a measure of one’s moral character in the context of illness. The correspondence also demonstrates the subtle changes in rhetoric regarding ‘sensibility’, reflecting evolving medical speculation. It also describes the differing perspectives of the female body between doctors and novelists and the women patients themselves. Yet much of this correspondence shows an unexpected blend of metaphor with a realistic and utilitarian approach to therapeutic advice and the patient’s own compliance. In these letters we discover some genuinely sympathetic doctors.

Genetic Counseling and Preventive Medicine in Post-War Bosnia by Philip C. Aka Pdf

Genetic Counseling and Preventive Medicine in Post-War Bosnia offers a unique new perspective to longstanding debates on healthcare reforms in Bosnia. In this penetrating analysis, Philip C. Aka argues that twenty-five years after the ethnic war that shook Bosnia and Herzegovina to its foundations, healthcare reforms are a function of preventive medicine, defined as genetic counselling, backed by tobacco and alcohol control. At its core, the book offers a fresh examination of healthcare reforms in Bosnia set in the multidisciplinary field of bioethics, supplemented by comparative health studies, and comparative human rights. By offering an extensive list of electronically accessible literature on healthcare accessible in the public domain, Aka delivers an exemplar of research possibilities in the Information Age.

Social Aspects of Health, Medicine and Disease in the Colonial and Post-colonial Era by Henk Menke,Jane Buckingham,Farzana Gounder,Ashutosh Kumar,Maurits S. Hassankhan Pdf

From the 1600s, enslaved people, and after abolition of slavery, indentured labourers were transported to work on plantations in distant European colonies. Inhuman conditions and new pathogens often resulted in disease and death. Central to this book is the encounter between introduced and local understanding of disease and the therapeutic responses in the Caribbean, Indian and Pacific contexts. European response to diseases, focussed on protecting the white minority. Enslaved labourers from Africa and indentured labourers from India, China and Java provided interpretations and answers to health challenges based on their own cultures and medicinal understanding of the plants they had brought with them or which they found in the natural habitat of their new homes. Colonizers, enslaved and indentured labourers learned from each other and from the indigenous peoples who were marginalized by the expansion of plantations. This volume explores the medical, cultural and personal implications of these encounters, with the broad concept of medical pluralism linking the diversity of regional and cultural focus offered in each chapter. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Post-Acute and Long-Term Medicine by Pamela A. Fenstemacher,Peter Winn Pdf

This book addresses current issues surrounding hospital readmissions and the practice of post-acute and long-term care (LTC). Thoroughly updated, the Second Edition of this practical pocket guide presents new regulations governing these services and lessens the uncertainty involved in caring for patients in a long-term care facility. The book is divided into four sections that cover: types of care, which include community care, nursing facility care, and teamwork; clinical medicine, with suggested approaches to common conditions and wound care; psychosocial aspects of care, which include ethical and legal issues and caring for families; and special issues, with chapters on documentation, coding, and medication management. As community-based care is an area of rapid growth where the elderly are increasingly seeking their medical care, new chapters have also been added that describe these programs. Written by expert contributors, many of whom have worked within the American Medical Directors Association to create and disseminate a knowledge base for post-acute and LTC, this is a valuable resource for clinicians and educators seeking to maximize the care and living experience of residents in post-acute and long-term care settings.

Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine - Volume 6: Herpes Zoster And Post-herpetic Neuralgia by Coyle Meaghan Pdf

Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine provides a 'whole evidence' analysis of the Chinese medicine management of herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia. Evidence from the classical Chinese medicine literature, contemporary clinical literature, the outcomes of clinical trials and experimental studies are reviewed, analysed and synthesised. The data from all these sources are condensed to provide evidence-based statements which will inform clinical practice and guide future research. This book has been designed to be an easy reference at the point of care. During a patient consultation, Chinese medicine practitioners can refer to this book for guidance on which Chinese herbal medicine formulas, specific herbs, or acupuncture points, can best treat their patient, and be confident there is evidence which supports its use.Currently, Chinese medicine practitioners who develop a special interest in a particular health condition such as herpes zoster and its common sequelae post-herpetic neuralgia have to consult a variety of sources to further their knowledge. Typically, they use the contemporary clinical literature to understand the theory, aetiology, pathogenesis and obtain expert opinions on the Chinese medicine management of herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia. They search the electronic literature to identify systematic reviews of clinical trials, if any exist, to obtain assessments of the current state of the clinical evidence for particular interventions. If they have the skills and resources, they may search the classical Chinese medicine literature for an historical perspective on treatments that have stood the test of time. This book provides all of this information for practitioners in one handy, easy to use reference. This allows practitioners to focus on their job of providing high quality health care, with the knowledge it is based on the best available evidence.

Medicine in the Twentieth Century by Roger Cooter,John Pickstone Pdf

During the twentieth century, medicine has been radically transformed and powerfully transformative. In 1900, western medicine was important to philanthropy and public health, but it was marginal to the state, the industrial economy and the welfare of most individuals. It is now central to these aspects of life. Our prospects seem increasingly dependent on the progress of bio-medical sciences and genetic technologies which promise to reshape future generations. The editors of Medicine in the Twentieth Century have commissioned over forty authoritative essays, written by historical specialists but intended for general audiences. Some concentrate on the political economy of medicine and health as it changed from period to period and varied between countries, others focus on understandings of the body, and a third set of essays explores transformations in some of the theatres of medicine and the changing experiences of different categories of practitioners and patients.

Race in a Bottle by Jonathan Kahn Pdf

Approved by the FDA in 2005 as the first drug with a race-specific indication on its label, BiDil was touted as a pathbreaking therapy to treat heart failure in black patients. Kahn reveals that, at the most basic level, BiDil became racial through legal maneuvering and commercial pressure as much as through medical understandings of how the drug worked. He examines the legal and calls for a more reasoned approach to using race in biomedical research and practice.

Textbook of Post-ICU Medicine by Robert D. Stevens,Nicholas Hart,Margaret S. Herridge Pdf

Surviving critical illness is not always the happy ending that we imagine for patients. Intensive care unit (ICU) teams have traditionally focused on short term goals such as stabilizing or reversing organ system dysfunction, with little understanding of what became of patients once they left the ICU. However, research conducted in recent years has demonstrated that many ICU survivors can suffer from ill health and mental health issues for months or years to follow. The Textbook of Post-ICU Medicine: The Legacy of Critical Care identifies the long term outcomes of ICU and the steps that can be taken to improve patients' health and wellbeing. Describing the major clinical syndromes affecting ICU survivors, the book delineates established or postulated biological mechanisms of the post-acute recovery process, and discusses strategies for treatment and rehabilitation to promote recovery in the ICU and in the long term. The book serves as a unique reference for general practitioners, internists and nurses caring for long term ICU survivors as well as specialists in intensive care medicine, neurology, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.

Abortion in Post-revolutionary Tunisia by Irene Maffi Pdf

After the revolution of 2011, the electoral victory of the Islamist party ‘Ennahdha’ allowed previously silenced religious and conservative ideas about women’s right to abortion to be expressed. This also allowed healthcare providers in the public sector to refuse abortion and contraceptive care. This book explores the changes and continuity in the local discourses and practices related to the body, sexuality, reproduction and gender relationships. It also investigates how the bureaucratic apparatus of government healthcare facilities affects the complex moral world of clinicians and patients.
