Native Officialdom in Western India by Abhijit Sirdesai Pdf

This book is about the landlords or the revenue officers of the administrative system recognized as the Watan System which was rampant for more than five centuries before India’s independence. With a focus on the Deshmukhi Watan or the Desgut, held by Deshmukhs or Desais, this volume presents the hierarchy of the chain of officers like the Patils, Deshpandes, Kulkarnis, etc., and attempts to reflect on the status accorded to them by the society and the treatment they received from the British in the 19th century. Topics explored in this volume relate to the administrative history, the judicial institutions, laws of inheritance, role of religion, commonness of superstition, customs and traditions, etc. We find ample citations of the authoritative sources backing the views expressed by the author at every turn as we proceed. The book has a foreword written by Dr. Teotonio R. de Souza, a historian and the founder of Xavier Center for Historical Research, Goa.

On Modern Indian Sensibilities by Ishita Banerjee-Dube,Sarvani Gooptu Pdf

This book consists of incisive and imaginative readings of culture, politics, and history – and their intersections – in eastern India from the 16th to the 20th century. Focusing especially on Assam, Odisha, Bengal, and their margins, the volume explores Indo-Islamic cultures of rule as located on the cusp of Mughal-cosmopolitan and regional–local formations. Tracking sensibilities of time and history, senses of events and persons, and productions of the past and the present, the volume unravels intimate expressions of aesthetics and scandals, heroism and martyrdom, and voice and gender. It examines key questions of the interchanges between literary cultures and contending nationalisms, culture and cosmopolitanism, temporality and mythology, literature and literacy, history and modernity, and print culture and popular media. The book offers grounded and connected accounts of a large, important region, usually studied in isolation. It will be of interest to scholars and students of history, literature, politics, sociology, cultural studies, and South Asian studies.

Economy of Colonial Orissa, 1866-1947 by J. K. Samal Pdf

Description: The work provides a readable analysis of the economy of British Orissa, Princely Orissa and hill tribes of Orissa. The impact of colonial economy combined with the consequences of fragmentation of Oriya-speaking areas brought about colossal change in the material condition of the people of Orissa. The poverty and starvation had taken root among the common mass of Orissa while a select class lived a parasitic life in abundance of wealth, thriving easy on the cheaply available labour and the back-breaking toil of the farmers and artisans. The crux of the problem was that indigenous economic system remained nearly intact, though stagnant and ossified, scarcely able to release more wealth to meet the growing demands. Even today any excursion to an Orissan village, unless modernised under the Five Year Plans, reveal to an observer that traditional economy in its structure in the system that supports the land-based people, however inadequately. This was the root cause of extreme economic backwardness of colonial Orissa. This work will provide some insight into the operation of a vital system in regional economy so that defects that still continue to plague it may be remedied towards a healthy regeneration of this system.
