Mesozoic Stratigraphy of India by Santanu Banerjee,Subir Sarkar Pdf

This book envisages a multi-proxy approach using stable isotopes, geochemical proxies, magnetic susceptibility and associated biotic events for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental interpretations of the Mesozoic sedimentary record of India. Mesozoic rocks of India record abnormal sea level rise, greenhouse climate, intensified volcanism, hypoxia in seawater, extensive black shale deposition, and hydrocarbon occurrence. The Mesozoic has also witnessed mass extinction events, evolution of dinosaurs, and breakdown of the supercontinent Pangea and the formation of Gondwana. Although the Mesozoic geology of India has witnessed significant progress in the last century, literature survey reveals a huge gap in knowledge regarding sequence stratigraphy, chemostratigraphy and key geological events. A synthesis of sedimentological, paleontological and chemical data is included to presenting a comprehensive understanding of the Indian Mesozoic record to students, researchers and professionals.

The Indian Mesozoic Chronicle by Jai Krishna Pdf

The book reviews and summarizes the Indian Mesozoic geological evolution in an innovative alternative perspective of sequence stratigraphy. It mainly focuses on the Jurassic interval, but also concisely discusses the preceding Triassic and Cretaceous geological records. The key to the study is primarily held in the recently developed ammonoid based high resolution scales in the Triassic and Jurassic period. The Indian Jurassic record is thus elevated to a high resolution pedestal. The large intra-Jurassic stratigraphic gap in Kachchh, with increase in duration from margin to basin, has been précised in different sections, along with radical revision of its long held interpretation from sub-aerial to sub-marine all over from Arabia to Australia. Other significant gaps are also differentiated into sub-aerial and sub-marine. The Indian Late Precambrian – Neogene record is organized into five mega-sequences. Among these, the fourth – also the most important one – includes the intra-Permian to Early Eocene interval from the origin to the closure of the Neotethys. Based on multidisciplinary integration of the Indian Mesozoic geological record and comparison with hydrocarbon producing basins on east and west of India, a highly positive scenario of the hydrocarbon source/reservoir sediment perspective is outlined in the book in sequence stratigraphic backdrop as an edifice for future elaborate evaluation.

Historical Geology of India by S.K. Shah Pdf

‘Historical Geology of India’ is a text book for graduate and post-graduate students of geology, geophysics and other earth sciences for Indian Universities. It also caters to the universities of USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada as one or two credit courses on regional studies are included in the curriculum. Besides it can be useful to professional geologists and geophysicists working on various projects in India. The book has been specially designed to cover the course content of major Indian Universities and the approved syllabi of the University Grants Commission. This book has not been written in the classical style of what is where and when was it formed; instead there has been an attempt to base the entire history on the time control as available from latest data on high resolution stratigraphy through fossil content, radiometric dating and palaeomagnetic studies. There is a special focus on the tectonic history of the entire subcontinent through time from Precambrian times to present day.

Rift and Drift Episodes of Western India since the Mesozoic Era by Swagato Dasgupta,Soumyajit Mukherjee Pdf

A lot of research has been done on the architecture and tectonics of volcanic passive margin of the Indian west coast, as well as on the Deccan Large Igneous Province. Most of these studies interpret gravity and seismic data from offshore of Western India. In comparison, outcrop-based meso-scale tectonic studies of the Deccan trap along the coastal margin and interior of the state Maharashtra, India, is limited. Detailed understanding of tectonic evolution and stress regimes of western Indian basins therefore, remains necessary to research. As such, this book aims to provide tectonic framework, structural history and paleostress regimes of the following rift basins of Indian western margin based on outcrop-study: (i) Jaisalmer, (ii) Bikaner- Nagaur, (iii) Barmer, (iv) Cambay and (v) Kutch. The tectonic linkage amongst these basins and with the Indian west coast will also be covered. The Mesozoic and Tertiary basins of western Indian margin have special importance in terms of their genesis and tectonic evolution. Mesozoic stratigraphy has been identified in Jaisalmer, Kutch and Barmer basins. These basins initiated as intra-cratonic rift basins during Gondwana. Episodic rifting of Africa and India resulting in separation and drifting of the Indian plate during Late Gondwana (Jurassic to Early Cretaceous), developed these basins. Inheritance of pre-existing structures played a key role in basin evolution. The Cambay and the Tertiary rifting of Barmer basin was a consequence of oblique rifting between the Seychelles micro-continent and the Indian plate, having extension direction trending ~NE. The Barmer and the Cambay basins are two of the major Indian hydrocarbon producing basins. Promising hydrocarbon potentiality has been tested in the other western margin basins as well. Thus considering their economic importance and varied tectonic history we have planned to undertake structural fieldwork in these basins, which will further enhance our understanding to their genesis and paleostress regimes. The other objective of the (field) work is to understand the basin tectonics and to investigate the tectonic inheritance. Such unique outcrop-based studies of several rift basins in western margin of India have hardly been carried out from structural geological perspective. The proposed book would be immensely helpful for oil industry professionals and academics. In detail, this book will also address: (i) brittle deformation of rift basins, (ii) role of pre-existing structures in rift-related fault propagation, (iii) tectonic linkage between the different basins, and (iv) fault reactivation and neotectonic activity and their probable causes.

A to Z Geology of India (Stratigraphy and Fossils) (A Bedside Book) by O.P. Mathur Pdf

The book is in the form of a ready reference. The subject matter of stratigraphy is full of names of formations, groups, etc. At times when we need to know about a certain formation for which we do not know the exact stratigraphic position, then we have to search the entire book, page by page, which becomes quite irritating and time consuming. To overcome this problem, the idea of arranging the different formations in an alphabetic order occurred to the author. During this process it was seen that many small formations, which are otherwise important, do not get their due representation, because they lie in company or association with much larger formations. Otherwise also stratigraphy is nothing but an orderly and chronological arrangement of different formations. In other words, we can say that stratigraphy is a language by itself, where different formations are its words. Same is the case with large number of fossils occurring in different formations. In the usual literature on the subject, it is practically impossible to find in what formation or formations a particular fossil occurs and to which fossil group it belongs. Alphabetical arrangement of fossils as shown in the list of fossils will help students and scholars to persue their task in an easier and quicker way. To arrange such a large number of fossils in an alphabetical order and to find their fossil groups was really a tough job. Still the author does not claim that all the formations and fossils occurring in the Indian stratigraphy are included in this book, and it cannot be the last word on the subject. This is more true in case of fossils, where unlimited literature is available.

Basement Tectonics 8 by Mervin J. Bartholomew,Donald W. Hyndman,David W. Mogk,Robert Mason Pdf

The 8th International Conference on Basement Tectonics was held in Butte, Montana, August 8-12,1988. Historically, basement tectonics conferences have focused on such topics as reactivation of faults, the influence of basement faults on metallogeny and hyrocarbon accumulation, and the use of geophysical and remote sensing techniques to interpret subsurface and surface geology. The 8th Conference diverged from past conferences in that a unifying theme was selected. Because ancient major terrane or cratonic boundaries are often postulated to be fault zones which are subsequently reactivated, the conference was organized to examine all aspects of ancient continental margins and terrane boundaries and to compare younger (Mesozoic) ones, about which more is known, with older (Paleozoic and Precambrian) ones. Moreover, because the 8th Conference was held in the northwestern United States, a greater emphasis was placed on the Mesozoic margin of western North America and the North American shield. The seven oral sessions and four poster sessions all dealt with aspects of the conference theme: characterization and comparison of ancient continental margins. The organizers extend their thanks to those individuals who graciously consented to serve as moderators for the oral sessions: John M. Bartley, Mark S. Gettings, M. Charles Gilbert, John M. Guilbert, Donald W. Hyndman, William P. Leeman, Robert Mason, and A. Krishna Sinha. The program with abstracts volume was prepared by S. E. Lewis and M. J. Bartholomew.
