Mister Dreyfus' Demons by Peter Dabbene Pdf

Mr. Dreyfus Demons is the story of Fred Dreyfus, an average individual who is thrust into a most unusual situation. Waking from an office party the night before, he discovers a door that leads straight into the infernal realm of hell. Condemned to hell on a technicality, his only chance of escape lies with the scruples of three random New Yorkers, or his own wits. As he is introduced to the scheming characters who inhabit the netherworld, Fred realizes that his best hope for escape lies within himself. Seizing opportunities as they present themselves, Fred forges tenuous alliances in a plan of escape born of necessity and constantly shifting with the political tide of hell. A Guide to the 18th Century Land Records in the Irish Registry of Deeds by Brian Nugent Pdf

The Registry of Deeds in Dublin contains a vast repository of summaries of Irish land transactions for the 18th century. This collection is particularly important, to genealogists among others, because of the destruction of other historical records in Ireland for the same period, especially since the Four Courts fire of 1922. In this guide you will find a description of the records held there, an explanation of the different Irish land and currency units used, and a wide ranging discussion of Irish land transactions and registries of the period and somewhat later. This includes the influence of the Penal Laws, the nature of Irish marriage settlements and the economic climate and prices prevailing in Ireland in that century. Chapter 8 consists of a detailed case study that traces the history of an Irish family, the Nugent branch of Ballina Co. Meath, in order to illustrate the value of the information in the Registry of Deeds.

Nominal and Pronominal Address in Jamaica and Trinidad by Matthias Klumm Pdf

This book examines the various patterns of nominal and pronominal address used in Jamaica and Trinidad, the two most populous islands of the English-speaking Caribbean. Given that the Anglo-Caribbean context has so far been largely neglected in address research, this study aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the linguistic means Jamaicans and Trinidadians have at their disposal and make use of to address each other. A particular focus will be on variation in the speakers’ address behaviour with regard to their sex, age, social class, ethnicity, and regional background. The study draws both on data from a self-compiled corpus of postcolonial Jamaican and Trinidadian literary works, and on questionnaire and interview data collected during fieldwork. This book contributes to the ever-growing body of research in the field of nominal and pronominal address, and will be relevant to researchers interested in the fields of sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and World Englishes.

English Speech Rhythm by Elizabeth Couper-Kuhlen Pdf

This monograph reconsiders the question of speech isochrony, the regular recurrence of (stressed) syllables in time, from an empirical point of view. It proposes a methodology for discovering isochrony auditorily in speech and for verifying it instrumentally in the acoustic laboratory. In a small-scale study of an English conversational extract, the gestalt-like rhythmic structures which isochrony creates are shown to have a hierarchical organization. Then in a large-scale study of a corpus of British and American radio phone-in programs and family table conversations, the function of speech rhythm at turn transitions is investigated. It is argued that speech rhythm serves as a metric for the timing of turn transitions in casual English conversation. The articular rhythmic configuration of a transition can be said to contextualize the next turn as, generally speaking, affiliative or disaffiliative with the prior turn. The empirical investigation suggests that speech rhythm patterns at turn transitions in everyday English conversation are not random occurrences or the result of a social-psychological adaptation process but are contextualization cues which figure systematically in the creation and interpretation of linguistic meaning in communication.
