Moments Without Proper Names by Gordon Parks Pdf

This oversized book of photography and verse reflects many aspects of the highly emotional, uncommonly eventful life of the author: the confusion and poverty he experienced as a child growing up in Fort Scott, Kansas; the bigotry, drug addiction, terror, chaos and blatant inhumanity to which he was exposed as a rising journalist and photographer; the beauty and sophistication with which his professional career is associated today.

Writers of the Black Chicago Renaissance by Steven C. Tracy Pdf

Writers of the Black Chicago Renaissance comprehensively explores the contours and content of the Black Chicago Renaissance, a creative movement that emerged from the crucible of rigid segregation in Chicago's "Black Belt" from the 1930s through the 1960s. Heavily influenced by the Harlem Renaissance and the Chicago Renaissance of white writers, its participants were invested in political activism and social change as much as literature, art, and aesthetics. The revolutionary writing of this era produced some of the first great accolades for African American literature and set up much of the important writing that came to fruition in the Black Arts Movement. The volume covers a vast collection of subjects, including many important writers such as Richard Wright, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Lorraine Hansberry as well as cultural products such as black newspapers, music, and theater. The book includes individual entries by experts on each subject; a discography and filmography that highlight important writers, musicians, films, and cultural presentations; and an introduction that relates the Harlem Renaissance, the White Chicago Renaissance, the Black Chicago Renaissance, and the Black Arts Movement. Contributors are Robert Butler, Robert H. Cataliotti, Maryemma Graham, James C. Hall, James L. Hill, Michael Hill, Lovalerie King, Lawrence Jackson, Angelene Jamison-Hall, Keith Leonard, Lisbeth Lipari, Bill V. Mullen, Patrick Naick, William R. The Documentary Film Book by Brian Winston Pdf

Powerfully posing questions of ethics, ideology, authorship and form, documentary film has never been more popular than it is today. Edited by one of the leading British authorities in the field, The Documentary Film Book is an essential guide to current thinking on documentary film. In a series of fascinating essays, key international experts discuss the theory of documentary, outline current understandings of its history (from pre-Flaherty to the post-Griersonian world of digital 'i-Docs'), survey documentary production (from Africa to Europe, and from the Americas to Asia), consider documentaries by marginalised minority communities, and assess its contribution to other disciplines and arts. Brought together here in one volume, these scholars offer compelling evidence as to why, over the last few decades, documentary has come to the centre of screen studies.

The Documentary Film Reader brings together an expansive range of writing by scholars, critics, historians, and filmmakers to provide a stimulating foundational text for students and others who want to undertake study of nonfiction film. While documentary has long been a mainstay of universities and cinematheques, its popularity of late has grown tenfold as reality television has flourished and as the ranks of novice filmmakers have swelled. There are now dozens of film festivals dedicated exclusively to documentaries. This reader presents an international perspective on the most significant developments and debates from several decades of critical writing about documentary. It integrates historical and theoretical approaches, offering a collection that is particularly well suited to meet the needs of large undergraduate survey courses on nonfiction film.

Walter Dean Myers by Mary Ellen Snodgrass Pdf

Walter Dean Myers, preeminent author of teen fiction biography and verse, refines the image of black characters that are frequently trivialized or vilified in juvenile literature, advertising, television, and film. From his saga The Glory Field to his novel The Young Landlords, Myers's canon surveys the complex realm of the teen years as colliding settings in home, school, and the street. This volume introduces readers to both the writer and his work, with an emphasis on the characters, dates, events, motifs, and themes from the books. Myers's 101 A-to-Z entries offer concise, analytical discussion on all topics and include generous citations from primary and secondary sources. Each entry concludes with a selected bibliography on such subjects as segregation, Malcolm X, urbanism, writing, metafiction, drugs and alcohol, slavery, and the Vietnam War. Appendices offer a timeline of historical events in Myers's writings and forty topics for group or individual projects, oral analysis, background material, and theme development. A map of Harlem (where many of the stories are set), genealogical diagrams for characters, and an author chronology contribute to a comprehensive presentation.

Jeff and Jimmy by R. C. Hamilton Pdf

Jeff and Jimmy- A Vietnam Epistolary by R. C. Hamilton With the multitude of writings about Vietnam, most of which are now probably confined to the cobweb and the dustbin of forgottenness, we thought we have known the last of them. Yet, the story of Jeff Hamilton and Jim Ackerman weaves an irresistible aura about it, a stirring essence that defies all that we believe we already know about 'Nam. Jeff and Jim are town mates-from Mansfield, Ohio-who find themselves thrown in the same platoon at Vietnam, Jeff as the platoon leader, and Jim his radio operator. On a tour of duty on March 22, 1968, both will face invisible enemies who will force them to act in a way that will forever make their mark in the minds of those who know them. At first, what transpired on that day would appear to be as enigmatic to friends and families as the whole episode of Vietnam itself. The details, when they finally become known, appear to be as emblematic as to be what Vietnam is really all about. About the Author R.C. Hamilton worked for over thirty years in an academic library in western Pennsylvania. During that time, he and his wife and son lived on a family farm and raised Scottish Highland Cattle in a Minor Breeds conservancy program. He was also a multi-instrumentalist and performer in a Scottish/Irish Traditional folk music band, ARAN, was a distance runner and sometime triathlon participant. His work has appeared in the O. Henry Awards short stories anthologies, the Antioch Review, Confrontation Magazine, Tropic magazine, Country Journal, Running Times; he was a regular freelance contributor to Westsylvania magazine and numerous other publications. He has won the Golden Quill Award for nonfiction (sports category) and has twice won the Westmoreland Award for poetry, and also the same award for fiction. He is now retired. He and his wife live in Alamogordo, New Mexico, which has over 300 sun days each year, and where he continues to practice the Irish bouzouki, button accordion, penny whistle and guitar and still tries to improve his technique-which is a perpetual labor of love. This is his second published book of narrative nonfiction.

Reel Black Talk by Linda Allen,Spencer Moon Pdf

As evidenced in interviews included in this volume, many African American filmmakers consider themselves artists first, their ethnicity being only part of what influences their work. This is the first book by an African American on contemporary African American filmmakers. Here directors and producers speak for themselves, posing challenges to current thinking in the field. Special emphasis is given to the filmmakers' productions and their experiences. Essays on historic figures reveal the rich history of the African American contribution to cinema. From Oscar Micheaux and Spencer Williams to Neema Barnett and the team of George Jackson and Doug McHenry, this revealing reference work will enlighten scholars, students, and film buffs. As early as 1899, African Americans were involved in the filmmaking industry. Oscar Micheaux took directing, writing, and producing to a higher level with the release of his first film in 1918; by 1948 he had made more than forty films. Currently, by international world cinema standards, the African American tradition rivals cinema from anywhere in the world, but these filmmakers face a quandary: whether to make films through the Hollywood system or follow an independent vision. This book presents a cross-section of filmmakers from each camp and also focuses on those who work in both arenas.
