Monopolies and Trusts by Richard T. Ely Pdf

This book deals with the Social Monopolies: patents, copyrights, etc.; Special privilege monopolies: those based on public and private favoritism and the Natural Monopolies: those arising form a limited supply of raw material, from properties inherent in the business and those arising from secrecy. Social monopolies are often called artificial monopolies, and in the author's previous works they are so called; but the term social monopolies appears to be a better term than artificial monopolies, because the work artificial carries with it a certain criticism, which anticipates the argument concerning their effects. It is preferable to discuss them hereafter and find out whether they are objectionable or not. The term natural monopolies is a convenient designation, and has become so widely accepted that it could not easily be changed. We may also have mixed monopolies, as where a political unit owns monopolistic property, which is managed by a private person, or where a private person owns monopolistic property, which is managed by a public agency."A highly valuable contribution to an important subject, ... the best piece of work that Professor Ely has yet done. ... In any case, all readers will be impressed by the perfect candor and scientific reserve which characterize the book." Professor Charles A. Bullock American Journal of Sociology"Suggestive, explicit, and, in a word, a capital text-book for the student or for the man of business" Chicago Tribune"It is admirable. It is the soundest contribution on the subject that has appeared" Prof. John R. Commons"By all odds the best written of Professor Ely?s work." Prof. Simon N. Patten University of PennsylvaniaABOUT THE AUTHORRichard T. Ely (1854-1943) entered Dartmouth College and later Columbia University, where he graduated in 1876. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg. In 1881 he was appointed to the chair of Political Economy at The Johns Hopkins University, which he retained until 1892 when he went to the University of Wisconsin as the first Director of the School of Economics, Political Science and History. He was the teacher and mentor of both John R. Commons and Wesley C. Mitchell. He was the author of numerous books and journal articles, and a founder of the American Economic Association (1885).

Monopolies, Trusts and Kartells (Classic Reprint) by Francis W. Hirst Pdf

Excerpt from Monopolies, Trusts and Kartells This is book - or rather the first part of it; for the second part is entirely new - has grown up put of an unpublished essay which (in the absence, I fear, of strong competition) gained a prize Oxford in 1899. The essay was an attempt to answer the question: "To what extent has the principle of monopoly encroached upon that of competition in the civilised states of the world in recent years, and with what consequences to the wealth and welfare of nations?" In the interval the world has been convulsed by the sudden appearance and rapid collapse of many gigantic trusts and corners. Several important books have also been published upon this subject by well-informed and competent writers, among whom I should especially mention Messrs. Raffalovich, Von Halle, Ely, Grunzell, Jenks, Macrosty, and Moody. If my own point of view is independent and my treatment of the subject very different from that followed by some of these writers, my obligations to them are none the less real and my respect for their work is none the less sincere. A Treatise on the Law of Monopolies and Industrial Trusts, as Administered in England and in the United States of America by Charles Fisk Beach Pdf

Reprint of the first edition. Published at a time when monopolies and trusts were beginning to attract the attention of reformers, this is more than a neutral overview of the subject. Indeed, Beach's pioneering treatise discusses the relationship of trusts and monopolies to public policy and Christian morality. He argues that public good is not to be sacrificed to private gain, then proceeds to the general principle "that contracts in restraint of trade conflict with public policy and are thus void."

The Control of Trusts by John Bates Clark Pdf

Excerpt from The Control of Trusts: An Argument in Favour of Curbing the Power of Monopoly by a Natural Method The purpose of this little book is a modest one. It does not attempt to duplicate work which has been well done by others. It contains no history of trusts and no description of the forms that they are now taking. It refers the reader to the works of Professors Jenks, Ely and Von Halle, and to the reports of the Industrial Commission, for facts concerning these consolidations and confines itself to the one object of advocating a certain definite policy in dealing with them. It is the policy that relies wholly on competition as the regulator of prices and wages and as the general protector of the interests of the public. It welcomes centralization, but aims to destroy monopoly, and to do this by keeping the field open to all independent producers who may choose to enter it. The Disintegration of Monopoly, and Other Articles (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Russell Pdf

Excerpt from The Disintegration of Monopoly, and Other Articles In general terms we all know that' a trust is the latest and most perfect form of combination among competing producers to control the supply of their products in order that they may dictate the terms on which they shall sell in the market, and may secure release from stress of competition among themselves. From the very beginning of trade, perhaps, certainly in all its known history, there have been various forms of combination, and we have long been familiar with them in this country under the name of pools, corners, combines and the like. This book, first published in 1905, examines the encroachment of monopoly upon the principle of competition in the industrialised world. It considers that competition is the life-blood of trade and commerce, and analyses the likelihood of the emergence of further monopolies and kartells. It also pays close attention to the actual law on monopolies and competition, as it stood in the UK, the USA, and Europe.

The Control of Trusts (Classic Reprint) by John Bates Clark Pdf

Excerpt from The Control of Trusts This book advocates a third course; namely, regu lating competition. It would cut off entirely an ab normal type of it by forbidding and repressing the cut throat Operations by which the trusts Often crush their rivals. Further, it would remove the special induce ment to such measures and thus create a condition in which competition of a tolerant kind would rule business life. It gives reasons for believing that this result can be reached with no disruption of the business system. Trusts Or Competition? Both Sides of the Great Question in Business, Law and Politics (Classic Reprint) by Alvred Bayard Nettleton Pdf

Excerpt from Trusts or Competition? Both Sides of the Great Question in Business, Law and Politics There was a choice of two ways for presenting a summary of the argument on either side. One would have taken the usual form of a colorless and balanced memorandum, satisfactory per haps to students, but dry and ill adapted to the general public, for whom the book is specially designed. By the other method, which has been employed, the editor has endeavored to present for each side, with something of the realism of actual debate, the strongest summarized argument that can be honestly framed out of the material furnished by all who have publicly contributed anything of value to the discussion or to the literature of the subject - leaving each reader to draw his own conclusions. In other words, while the book is non-partisan, these arguments are fairly bi-partisan. This method also gave opportunity for put ting a mass of unclaimed but valuable material through the editorial crucible and bringing it out in something like sym metrical shape. If it shall seem that the argument against the trust is somewhat more strenuous in style than the argument for the trust, it will be borne in mind that the former Speaks for a multitude who feel that by the trust system they are wronged, ethically as well as economically - that it is not merely a matter of dollars and cents but of fair-play and manhood.
