Early Film Noir by William Hare Pdf

The name is French and it has connections to German expressionist cinema, but film noir was inspired by the American Raymond Chandler, whose prose was marked by the gripping realism of seedy hotels, dimly lit bars, main streets, country clubs, mansions, cul-de-sac apartments, corporate boardrooms, and flop houses of America. Chandler and the other writers and directors, including James M. Cain, Dashiell Hammett, Jane Greer, Ken Annakin, Rouben Mamoulian and Mike Mazurki, who were primarily responsible for the creation of the film noir genre and its common plots and themes, are the main focus of this work. It correlates the rise of film noir with the new appetites of the American public after World War II and explains how it was developed by smaller studios and filmmakers as a result of the emphasis on quality within a deliberately restricted element of cities at night. The author also discusses how RKO capitalized on films such as Murder, My Sweet and Out of the Past--two of film noir's most famous titles--and film noir's connection to British noir and the great international triumph of Sir Carol Reed in The Third Man.

Murder in Hollywood by Charles Higham Pdf

For more than eighty years, the famous unsolved murder of William Desmond Taylor, the legendary bisexual film director, has generated debate and controversy. Now, best-selling author Charles Higham has solved the crime. Higham uncovers the corruption and intrigue of Los Angeles in the Roaring Twenties—and the film industry moguls’ complete domination of the city’s authorities. When it was discovered that a famous star of the day had probably killed Taylor, a massive cover-up began—from the removal of crucial evidence to the naming of innocent people as killers—which has continued until now to protect the truth. Murder in Hollywood goes beyond the killing to unearth unknown details about the life of Taylor before his arrival in Hollywood, as well as the stories and histories buried by the crooked authorities and criminals involved the case. The author’s exclusive interviews with the culpable star, his unique possession of long-vanished police records, and the support of the present-day Los Angeles county coroner—who examined the evidence as if the murder had taken place now—have ensured a hair-raising thriller. Charles Higham successfully presents the most plausible and convincing solution yet to the mystery. In the process he paints a vivid portrait of Hollywood in the 1920s—from its major stars to its bisexual subculture. The result is a compelling answer to a long-standing mystery and a fascinating study of a place, and an industry that, as today, let people reinvent themselves. Murder in Hollywood is more extraordinary than any crime of fiction and more exciting than any action adventure movie.

A Grammar of Murder by Karla Oeler Pdf

The dark shadows and offscreen space that force us to imagine violence we cannot see. The real slaughter of animals spliced with the fictional killing of men. The missing countershot from the murder victim’s point of view. Such images, or absent images, Karla Oeler contends, distill how the murder scene challenges and changes film. Reexamining works by such filmmakers as Renoir, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Jarmusch, and Eisenstein, Oeler traces the murder scene’s intricate connections to the great breakthroughs in the theory and practice of montage and the formulation of the rules and syntax of Hollywood genre. She argues that murder plays such a central role in film because it mirrors, on multiple levels, the act of cinematic representation. Death and murder at once eradicate life and call attention to its former existence, just as cinema conveys both the reality and the absence of the objects it depicts. But murder shares with cinema not only this interplay between presence and absence, movement and stillness: unlike death, killing entails the deliberate reduction of a singular subject to a disposable object. Like cinema, it involves a crucial choice about what to cut and what to keep.

Blood Cold by Dennis McDougal,Mary Murphy Pdf

The riveting true account of the 2001 murder of Bonny Lee Bakley, starring Robert Blake—the Hollywood icon accused of killing his wife in cold blood In May 2001 Bonny Lee Bakley was shot to death in a car parked on a dark Hollywood side street. Eleven months later Robert Blake—her husband, the father of her child, and the star of the classic film In Cold Blood and the popular 1970s TV detective series Baretta—was arrested for murder, conspiracy, and solicitation. Did Blake kill his wife? Did he hire someone to do the job for him? Award-winning journalist Dennis McDougal and entertainment-media expert Mary Murphy recount a real-life crime story more shocking and bizarre than any movie, chronicling the parallel worlds of Blake and Bakley, from their troubled youths to their sham of a marriage. By the late 1990s Blake was coasting on his past success. Bakley was a con artist who concocted online sex scams and victimized unsuspecting men, netting big money and dangerous enemies. In true noir style, McDougal and Murphy lay bare the stories of two violent people whose lives collided in a tragic tangle of abuse, betrayal, and love gone horribly wrong.

Contemporary Hollywood Masculinities by Susanne Kord,Elisabeth Krimmer Pdf

Kord and Krimmer investigate the most common male types - cops, killers, fathers, cowboys, superheroes, spies, soldiers, rogues, lovers, and losers - by tracing changing concepts of masculinity in popular Hollywood blockbusters from 1992 to 2008 - the Clinton and Bush eras - against a backdrop of contemporary political events, social developments, and popular American myths. Their in-depth analysis of over sixty films, from The Matrix and Iron Man to Pirates of the Caribbean and The Lord of the Rings, shows that movies, far from being mere entertainment, respond directly to today's social and political realities, from consumerism to "family values" to the War on Terror.

What's a Poor Girl To Do by Fred Andersen Pdf

This is Hollywood, 1948. You are a beautiful young actress. He is a ruthless and powerful film producer. He can make you a star or send you back to the sticks, and you have something he wants, right now. What are you willing to do? How much of yourself are you willing to give?"What's a Poor Girl to Do" is the new edition of my previously released book "Pamela Carr." The new title and cover better indicate the nature of the characters, and the time and place of the story. "Poor Girl" is a stand-alone book that shares a couple of characters with and briefly refers to my previous Hollywood murder mystery, "Lily Torrence." It is set at the end of World War II in Germany, New York and Hollywood. Though there are a couple of deaths, a sleuth, some tough cops and lying suspects, this is not so much a murder mystery as a catalogue of deadly sins, particularly lust, ambition, and arrogance, all of which are most especially seen in the pattern of abuse and denial that we now call #metoo, and that in 1948 they called business as usual. The year is 1947. Priscilla Preston and her husband Ken are struggling New York actors when Priscilla is picked as the lead in a new picture for Blackwell Studios. Morton Blackwell is the obsessive, despotic, charming monster who tries to control every aspect of his movies and everyone around him. Anna Andrzejewski (pron. Ahn-jrey-evski) is a recent immigrant from the ashes of bombed-out Berlin trying to succeed in a Hollywood that may not be ready to accept a blonde, Nordic beauty with a complicated past. Screenwriter/mystery author Lyman becomes involved in the lives and problems of both Priscilla and Anna while he tries to find a reason to live after the death of this wife. Morton takes Priscilla to Hollywood, changes her name to Pamela Carr, and makes her his lover. While pursuing this adulterous affair, Mort has her starring in his new movie "Angeline" about a virginal 16th Century Italian nun. Husband Kenny Preston is upset and troublesome about the loss of his wife until he conveniently dies from an overdose of booze and pills. But was it an accident, a suicide, or perhaps something else? Anna is just getting started at Blackwell Studios when Morton turns an interview into an attempted rape. Anna's bind: how can she punish him when he controls her future and no one else cares? When a story appears in the tabloid "Star" hinting that Mort was involved in the death of Ken Preston the same night that he raped Anna, she lies to incriminate him in the death, knowing that his only true alibi is to admit his assault on her. The source of the story is unknown, but it is not Anna, who finally admits the truth to Lyman and the police. Morton is questioned by the police and admits the rape. This gets him off the hook for Ken's death. He is not prosecuted for the rape.Life goes on. Lyman gets a new screenwriting job. "Angeline" is completed and Pamela is determined that her affair with Morton is over, but he is not easily put off. Anna meets Marlene Dietrich, who introduces her to a group of Hollywood women who are also victims of the town's rampant sexual predators. "Angeline" and Pamela are nominated for Oscars. Mort's studio is saved, Anna gets a satisfactory revenge on Mort, and Lyman belatedly realizes who killed Kenny Preston.

Siren City by Robert Miklitsch Pdf

Hailed for its dramatic expressionist visuals, film noir is one of the most prominent genres in Hollywood cinema. Yet, despite the "boom" in sound studies, the role of sonic effects and source music in classic American noir has not received the attention it deserves. Siren City engagingly illustrates how sound tracks in 1940s film noir are often just as compelling as the genre's vaunted graphics. Focusing on a wide range of celebrated and less well known films and offering an introductory discussion of film sound, Robert Miklitsch mobilizes the notion of audiovisuality to investigate period sound technologies such as the radio and jukebox, phonograph and Dictaphone, popular American music such as "hot" black jazz, and "big numbers" featuring iconic performers such as Lauren Bacall, Veronica Lake, and Rita Hayworth. Siren City resonates with the sounds and source music of classic American noir-gunshots and sirens, swing riffs and canaries. Along with the proverbial private eye and femme fatale, these audiovisuals are central to the noir aesthetic and one important reason the genre reverberates with audiences around the world.
