Negro Americans, What Now? (Classic Reprint) by James Weldon Johnson Pdf

Excerpt from Negro Americans, What Now? IT is not my intention that the title Of this pam phlet should carry a prohibitive significance. Prob ably some white Americans will read what I have written. The significance of my title is that I am not particularly concerned with whether they do or do not. I am writing directly to my fellow Negro Americans, and on the American question which most deeply affects them. The American Negro by Paul Brandon Barringer Pdf

Excerpt from The American Negro: His Past and Future After the preliminary meeting of the Tri-State Medical Society at Virginia Beach, Dr. P.I!. Barringer, of the University of Virginia, was requested by the acting secretary to prepare for the organization meeting of this Society to be held at Charlotte, X.C, a short talk on the raison d'etre for a new medical society in the South. In this address Dr. Barringer took the position that if this was to be conducted as other societies, there was no need for a new society, as there were sixieties in abundance already in existence which devoted themselves to the general needs of the profession, and that if another society was organized it. should be based upon new lines. He suggested that the entire first lav of each meeting of this new society should be devoted to some subject of broad general interest to the profession, such as the negro problem now facing the South, race mortality, inebriety, etc. This suggestion was well received and the negro problem was chosen as the subject for discussion at the next meeting at Charleston, S. C, and Dr. Barringer appointed leader of debate with the request that, he bring in a paper on the influence of heredity upon the negro. Many papers on the negro were read at this Charleston meeting and the subject freely discussed. By the unanimous vote of the Society it was ordered that the papers of Dr. P.B. Barringer and Dr.S. C.Baker should be printed and sent to all the medical societies in the South with the recommendation that they seriously consider the facts therein set forth. Paulus A. Irving, Secretary Tri-State Medical Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Historical Romance of the American Negro (Classic Reprint) by Charles H. Fowler Pdf

Excerpt from Historical Romance of the American Negro For a number of years it has been on my mind to write a book regarding the principal events that have occurred to the colored race since the beginning of the agitation against slavery, going on from thence to the great Rebellion, passing through that war, and also dealing with all subjects of great importance that have arrested our attention under our glorious freedom. At the same time it has occurred to me, as it has to many another writer, that my book would be far more interesting to the general reader, if I were to select a representative woman of our own race, and make her the mouthpiece of all I wished to say; in other words, to introduce the whole under the pleasing form of an historical romance, so that we might keep our heroine constantly before our eyes, and make her weave in a continuous tale of love, travel, war and peace, and thus portray the lady playing her own parts on that tremendous stage of Time that has been set forth for the gaze and astonishment of the whole country during the past fifty years. I hope those members of the general public who favor me by a perusal of my book will be pleased with my plan. "Peace hath her victories, no less renowned than war," and I have introduced into my book all the great advances that our race has made since the fall of Richmond, and, indeed, have brought things down to this year. The reader will find a number of things that are intended to introduce humor, and to brighten the darker portions of the story. And as some fault-finding person may say that I have overdrawn my heroine, and made her far more clever than she could ever have naturally been, I venture to affirm that such a charge can by no means be just, for we have women among us, and men, too, who are as intelligent and clever as can be found among any other race on the face of the earth. I believe my book will prove the truth of this assertion in those cases, at least, where the heroines and heroes of the colored race are mentioned in its pages by name. Beulah Jackson will therefore stand as a representative woman among our own people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Narrative of the Negro This little volume contains, in story form, a brief outline of the history of the Negro. In collating the facts herein set forth it was my privilege to consult the Congressional Library at the libraries of Harvard and Yale universities and the Boston Public Library. A Short History of the American Negro (Classic Reprint) by Benjamin Griffith Brawley Pdf

Excerpt from A Short History of the American Negro It is perhaps only when one enters upon such a study as this that he realizes how valuable are the investiga tions of Dr. W. E. B. Dubois in this field. For the earlier years the thesis, The Suppression of the African slave-trade, is really indispensable; and one of the chapters is largely based on the Atlanta Univer sity publication, The Negro Church. In a similar way is another chapter based upon the valuable study by Dr. R. R. Wright, In, entitled self-help in Negro Education. The last chapter is naturally much indebted to my own publication, The Negro in Literature and Art. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Negro and the Nation by George S. Merriam Pdf

Excerpt from The Negro and the Nation: A History of American Slavery and Enfranchisement An English traveler, riding along the banks of the Potomac in mid-July, 1798, saw ahead of him on the road an old-fashioned chaise, its driver urging forward his slow horse with the whip, until a sharp cut made the beast swerve, and the chaise toppled over the bank, throwing out the driver and the young lady who was with him. The traveler - it was John Bernard, an actor and a man of culture and accomplishments, spurred forward to the rescue. As he did so he saw another horseman put his horse from a trot to a gallop, and together they reached the scene of action, extricated the woman and revived her from her swoon with water from a brook; then righted the horse and chaise, helped to restore the half-ton of baggage to its place; learned the story of the couple - a New Englander returning home with his Southern bride - and saw them safely started again. Then the two rescuers, after their half-hour of perspiring toil in a broiling sun, addressed themselves courteously to each other; the Virginian dusted the coat of the Englishman, and as Mr. Bernard returned the favor he noticed him well, - "a tall, erect, well-made man, evidently advanced in years, but who appeared to have retained all the vigor and elasticity resulting from a life of temperance and exercise. His dress was a blue coat, buttoned to the chin, and buckskin breeches." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Century of Negro Migration (Classic Reprint) by Carter G. Woodson Pdf

Excerpt from A Century of Negro Migration N treating this movement of the Negroes, the writer does not presume to say the last word on the subject. The exodus of the Negroes from the South has just begun. The blacks have re cently realized that they have freedom of body and they will now proceed to exercise that right. To presume, therefore, to exhaust the treatment of this movement in its incipiency is far from the intention of the writer. The aim here is rather to direct attention to this new phase of Negro American life which will doubtless prove to be the most significant event in our local his tory since the Civil War. The Racial Integrity of the American Negro (Classic Reprint) by Alexander Harvey Shannon Pdf

Excerpt from The Racial Integrity of the American Negro The author Of this book has been for some years a close observer of race relations and a student Of those problems growing out Of racial contacts. As Chaplain of the Mississippi State Penitentiary, he was called upon to minister to several hundred Negro prisoners, thus gaining a measure of intimate knowledge Of the Negro criminal. As a teacher in the employ of the Imperial Government Of Japan, he was privileged to make a brief study Of an Oriental civilization. Here was gained a measure Of knowledge Of the Eurasian problem, SO acute in some of the Asiatic countries and in evidence wherever contact Of East and West has occurred. The chief interest Of the author in the Negro problem has centered about the matter Of racial intermixture - the mu latto problem - and most Of his writings have had to do with this evil. The present study, while endeavoring to ascertain and to state facts impartially, necessarily gives a large measure Of personal reaction to certain of the prob lems involved in present-day contacts of the two races, the black and the white, in the United States. Whoever really understands conditions now Obtaining in this area is pre pared to understand the situation wherever two dissimilar races occupy the same territory, or wherever casual racial contacts occur - as is now the case throughout the greater part of the world.
