Neutron Diffraction Analysis of Internal Stresses and Microstructure by Vadim Davydov Pdf

In the current world of advanced technologies, materials play a key role in our day-to-day life, and the investigation of their mechanical properties with the aim of improvement, thus becomes a matter of crucial importance. Nondestructive studies of microstructure and of internal stresses coupled with in situ mechanical tests and diffraction techniques yield an attractive tool for materials scientists. This assists not only to a growth of this topic in significance but also to its development into the detached and relatively new scientific field of diffraction analysis. Neutron diffraction used in the listed works of this book as a main probe for materials, has become the most powerful technique for examination of microstructure and mechanical properties, and it is therefore considered as a prerequisite. In response to the needs of diligent fabricator of materials, striving for the improvement of materials quality, the topic of internal stress development pertains to the significantly relevant issues covered by this book.

Diffraction Analysis of the Microstructure of Materials by Eric J. Mittemeijer,Paolo Scardi Pdf

Overview of diffraction methods applied to the analysis of the microstructure of materials. Since crystallite size and the presence of lattice defects have a decisive influence on the properties of many engineering materials, information about this microstructure is of vital importance in developing and assessing materials for practical applications. The most powerful and usually non-destructive evaluation techniques available are X-ray and neutron diffraction. The book details, among other things, diffraction-line broadening methods for determining crystallite size and atomic-scale strain due, e.g. to dislocations, and methods for the analysis of residual (macroscale) stress. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of solid-state physics and supplies readers sufficient information to apply the methods themselves.

Measurement of Residual and Applied Stress Using Neutron Diffraction by Michael T. Hutchings,Aaron D. Krawitz Pdf

The relevance of residual stresses in engineering components is being increasingly appreciated by modern engineers concerned with design and performance. The non-destructive evaluation of such stresses has provided a challenge which has been addressed by the use of X-ray diffraction to characterize near-surface stresses. The extension of diffraction stress measurements to include neutron diffraction represents a major advance. Use of the penetrating power of neutrons is ideally suited to the determination of macrostress variation through thick components and of microstresses in composites and multiphase alloys. This collection of papers on the subject is the first of its kind and represents a definitive summary of the field. With contributions by most of the world's experts, it gives a comprehensive treatment of the theory, practice and problems in the measurement of residual stresses using neutrons, with references to virtually all work currently in print. It provides state-of-the-art information about the uses and limitations of the method, with numerous examples. It is appropriate both for those currently using X-ray methods, and f

Composites Evaluation by J. Herriot Pdf

Composites Evaluation contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Testing, Evaluation and Quality Control of Composites-TEQC 87, held at the University of Surrey, UK on September 22-24, 1987. The papers review the physical and chemical properties of composites and the testing and evaluation of these materials. This monograph is comprised of 29 chapters split into nine sections, organized around the themes of nondestructive testing, fatigue testing, impact testing, processing-property relationships, acoustic emission, fracture, mechanical tests, and specialized test equipment and assessment of in-service behavior. The first chapter deals with the nondestructive testing of welds in continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics, while the second focuses on the use of an automated coin-tap technique for the nondestructive testing of composite structures. The chapters that follow explore hysteresis measurement for obtaining characteristic quantities during dynamic fatigue; real-time recording of impact experiments on composite laminates; the use of statistical methods for determining design data for advanced composite materials; and the strain dependence of elastic modulus in unidirectional composites. The final chapter describes a methodical approach for studying and predicting polymer fiber composite serviceability influenced by cold climate factors. This text will appeal to mechanical and structural engineers as well as materials scientists and technologists.

International Conference on Residual Stresses by G. Beck,S. Denis,A. Simon Pdf

Residual stresses are always introduced in materials when they are produced, or when they undergo non-uniform plastic deformation during use. The circumstances that can cause residual stresses are therefore numerous. Residual stresses exist in all materials and, depending on their distribution, can playa beneficial role (for example, compressive surface stress) or have a catastrophic effect, especially on fatigue behaviour and corrosion properties. The subject of residual stresses took form around 1970 with the development of methods to measure macroscopic deformations during the machining of materials or on an atomic scale by X-ray diffraction. These techniques have made considerable progress in the last 20 years. The meetings organized in several countries (Germany, France, Japan, etc. ) have largely contributed to this progress, aided by the numerous exchanges of information and knowledge to which they have given rise. Studies of the formation of residual stresses began more slowly, but have progressed with the emergence of increasingly realistic models of materials behaviour and with access to ever more powerful codes for numerical calculations. Two successive meetings for discussing this topic have been held in Europe. The first, held in 1982 in Nancy (France), consisted of 30 participants from 5 countries. The second was held in Linkoping (Sweden) in 1984, with 80 participants of 16 nationalities. It was decided to hold a first International Conference, ICRS, to address all aspects of the problem. Held in 1986 in Garmisch-Partenkirschen (FRG), it was an assembly of neady 300 participants from 21 countries.
