Using Kate Raworth’s regenerative economic theoretical model as set out in Doughnut Economics, this book examines 57 films emanating from Europe and the 4 areas of concern they raise about energy production, pollution and waste management, agribusiness, disrupted ecosystems and the migratory f low. These ecology documentaries make explicit the damage done to our planet thanks to growth capitalism and neoliberal globalisation. But they also provide the evidence that solutions to this planetary abuse exist. The book demonstrates how these documentaries reveal the process of humankind’s planetary plundering and explores the structuring of the eco-doc as a new generic type in the domain of documentary practice. Building on the interdisciplinary framework of documentary studies, digital media studies, and contemporary art criticism, Jihoon Kim investigates the ways in which these practices both challenge and update the aesthetic, epistemological, political, and ethical assumptions of traditional film-based documentary. Providing a diverse range of case studies that classify and examine these practices, the book argues that the new media technologies and the experiential platforms outside the movie theater, such as the gallery, the world wide web, and social media services, expand five horizons of documentary cinema: image, vision, dispositif, archive, and activism. Software-based technologies deeply saturate our everyday lives. Consequently, they also influence the ways we see and mediate the world. In fact, the ease and flexibility software provides implies a shift in control. Digital media mediates itself, turning software into a co-author. Yet, the potentials of such a co-authorship are still largely constrained by conventions stemming from the need to run strips of celluloid through a projector. This book demonstrates how software can retrain filmmakers' visions of the world – from branching trees to the shifting contours of clouds. It does so by ethnographically studying one particular technology, the Korsakow System.
