Ngā mōteatea by Sir Apirana Turupa Ngata Pdf

This classic text on Maori culture collects indigenous New Zealand songs recorded over a period of 40 years by a respected Maori leader and distinguished scholar. The essence of Maori culture and its musical tradition is exhibited in the original song texts, translations, audio CDs, and notes from contemporary scholars featured in this new edition. This rare cultural treasure makes accessible a fleeting moment in Maori history when traditional practices and limited experience with the outside world allowed indigenous songs and customs to flourish.

The Forgotten Prophet by Jeffrey Sissons Pdf

Te Ito’s vision was one of pan-tribal unity; he wanted to bring together all the people of Taranaki ‘from Mokau to Pātea’. Tāmati Te Ito Ngāmoke led the prophetic Kaingārara movement in Taranaki from 1856. Te Ito was revered by tribal leaders as a prophetic tohunga matakite; but others, including many settlers and officials, viewed him as an ‘imposter’, a ‘fanatic’. Despite his influence and leadership, Te Ito’s historical importance remains largely unrecognised today. By the time war broke out in 1860, Te Ito and his followers had established a school and a court system in Taranaki. Striving for the ‘fulfilment of the divine order’, the Kaingārara movement initiated the ‘Taranaki iconoclasm’, discarding tapu objects associated with atua (ancestral spirits, which often took the form of reptiles) into massive bonfires. Te Ito was a visionary adviser to Te Ātiawa chief Wiremu Kīngi Te Rangitāke, and played a crucial role in the conflicted region, both before and after the wars of the 1860s. Initially perceived as a rival to the Parihaka leaders, Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai, he eventually joined the Parihaka community. Jeffrey Sissons’s account illuminates this tumultuous chapter in Aotearoa’s history.

Ko Tautoro, Te pito o Toku Ao by Hone Sadler Pdf

Ngapuhi is the largest iwi in New Zealand, and its people have occupied the northern North Island, from Tamaki in the south to Te Rerenga Wairua in the north, from the time of their arrival from Hawaiki. Ko Tautoro, Te Pito o Toku Ao is Ngapuhi elder Hone Sadler's powerful account of the origins, history, and culture of the Ngapuhi people—a profound introduction to the Sacred House of Puhi. Sadler illustrates the unbroken chain of Ngapuhi sovereignty by looking in depth at his own hapu of Ngati Moerewa, Ngati Rangi, and Ngai Tawake ki te Waoku of Tautoro and Mataraua. The narrative is told through the weaving together of karakia and whakapapa, histories, and korero that have been part of the oral traditions of Ngapuhi's whanau, hapu, and iwi and handed down through the generations on marae and other gathering places. Presented first to open the Ngapuhi's claim before the Waitangi Tribunal, Sadler's narrative is a powerful Maori oral account, presented here in Te Reo and in English on facing pages, of the story of New Zealand's largest iwi.
