(No) Sex in Japan by Alice Pacher Pdf

This book presents a sociological perspective on (non-)sexual intimate relationships in contemporary Japan. The phenomenon of sexlessness in intimate relationships has gained increasing attention in popular culture. However, few scholarly investigations exist in examining this striking trend in Japan. This book presents an analysis of the socio-structural elements within both academic and public discourses in Japanese culture relating to sexlessness in intimate relationships. Drawing from original interview research, the author provides insights into individuals’ experiences and investigates the connection between sexual inactivity, sexuality and Japanese couples’ satisfaction and well-being in their relationships. The book discusses how work environment, childbirth, infertility treatments, as well as past sexual experiences, extramarital affairs, and both unmarried and married couple relationships influence individual sexual behavior and consciousness. A broad overview of the meaning of sexuality through a cultural comparison with discourses on sexuality and interview results in Germany and Austria is also provided. To this end, the book calls into question whether sexlessness is a unique Japanese phenomenon or whether parallels and similarities might also be found in Western societies. Bringing together academic and public discourses on sexless couples, this book engages a rethinking of the meaning of sexuality, love, intimacy and relationships, both in and outside of Japan. It is of interest to students and scholars of Japanese studies, gender, sexology and sociology.

Lover's Guide to Japan by Boye Lafayette De Mente Pdf

This guide to sex in Japan demystifies the infamous brothels and parlous of Tokyo and provides a wealth of first-hand information. An important part in any lover's arsenal is an understanding of the background of sex in Japan, an appreciation of the finer points of Japan's culture as it relates to human sexuality, and a familiarity with the vocabulary of love. It generally takes at least two years of energetic (and expensive!) on-the-spot experience to accumulate a working knowledge of Japanese love words. To make things easier, faster, and less expensive, Lover's Guide to Japan includes a selection of words and sentences aimed at acquainting the reader with enough vocabulary to engage in several levels of "pillow talk" with the partner of your choice. Whether you're a newcomer to Japan or an old hand at romance in the Land of the Rising Sun, this guide can be your ticket to after-hours fun. Where to go, what to do, what to say - it's all here. Lover's Guide to Japan gives you instant access to all the (sensual) mysteries of Japan and the Japanese. Once this book shows you what goes on behind those sliding screens, you may never want to leave.

Or perhaps never existed at all.” —Todd Shimoda author of The Fourth Treasure and 365 Views of Mt. Fuji "An eye-opening, detailed look at the private, intimate lives of Japanese women ... This is an intelligent and authoritative work, covering everything from adultery to sex volunteers and the role of fortune tellers in Japanese romance. Occupying Power by Sarah Kovner Pdf

The year was 1945. Hundreds of thousands of Allied troops poured into war-torn Japan and spread throughout the country. The effect of this influx on the local population did not lessen in the years following the war's end. In fact, the presence of foreign servicemen also heightened the visibility of certain others, particularly panpan—streetwalkers—who were objects of their desire. Occupying Power shows how intimate histories and international relations are interconnected in ways scholars have only begun to explore. Sex workers who catered to servicemen were integral to the postwar economic recovery, yet they were nonetheless blamed for increases in venereal disease and charged with diluting the Japanese race by producing mixed-race offspring. In 1956, Japan passed its first national law against prostitution, which produced an unanticipated effect. By ending a centuries-old tradition of sex work regulation, it made sex workers less visible and more vulnerable. This probing history reveals an important but underexplored aspect of the Japanese occupation and its effect on gender and society. It shifts the terms of debate on a number of controversies, including Japan's history of forced sexual slavery, rape accusations against U.S. servicemen, opposition to U.S. overseas bases, and sexual trafficking.

Lovesick Japan by Mark D. West Pdf

In Lovesick Japan, Mark D. West explores an official vision of love, sex, and marriage in contemporary Japan. A comprehensive body of evidence—2,700 court opinions—describes a society characterized by a presupposed absence of physical and emotional intimacy, affection, and personal connections. In compelling, poignant, and sometimes horrifying court cases, West finds that Japanese judges frequently opine on whether a person is in love, what other emotions a person is feeling, and whether those emotions are appropriate for the situation. Sometimes judges’ views about love, sex, and marriage emerge from their presentation of the facts of cases. Among the recurring elements are abortions forced by men, compensated dating, late-life divorces, termination fees to end affairs, sexless couples, Valentine’s Day heartbreak, "soapland" bath-brothels, and home-wrecking hostesses. Sometimes the judges’ analysis, decisions, and commentary are as revealing as the facts. Sex in the cases is a choice among private "normal" sex, which is male-dominated, conservative, dispassionate, or nonexistent; commercial sex, which caters to every fetish but is said to lead to rape, murder, and general social depravity; and a hybrid of the two, which commodifies private sexual relationships. Marriage is contractual; judges express the ideal of love in marriage and proclaim its importance, but virtually no one in the court cases achieves it. Love usually appears as a tragic, overwhelming emotion associated with jealousy, suffering, heartache, and death.

Genders, Transgenders and Sexualities in Japan by Mark McLelland,Romit Dasgupta Pdf

Incorporating Japanese language materials and field-based research, this compelling collection of essays takes a comparative look at the changing notions of gender and sexual diversity in Japan, considering both heterosexual and non-heterosexual histories, lifestyles and identities. Written by key Japanese authors and Western scholars the volume examines how non-conformist individuals have questioned received notions and challenged social norms relating to sex and gender. The chapters depict the plurality of gender positions; from housewives opposed to gender roles within marriage to heterosexual men wishing to be more involved in family life. Including material not previously published in English, this volume gives an overview of the important changes taking place in gender and sexuality studies within Japanese scholarship.

Shinto - The Ancient Religion of Japan by W. G. Aston Pdf

The present treatise has two objects. It is intended, primarily and chiefly, as a repertory of the more significant facts of Shinto for the use of scientific students of religion. It also comprises an outline theory of the origin and earlier stages of the development of religion, prepared with special reference to the Shinto evidence. The subject is treated from a positive, not from a negative or agnostic standpoint, Religion being regarded as a normal function, not a disease, of humanity. This element of the work owes much to the continental scholars Réville, Goblet D’Alviella, and Pfleiderer.

Male Colors by Gary Leupp Pdf

Tokugawa Japan ranks with ancient Athens as a society that not only tolerated, but celebrated, male homosexual behavior. Few scholars have seriously studied the subject, and until now none have satisfactorily explained the origins of the tradition or elucidated how its conventions reflected class structure and gender roles. Gary P. Leupp fills the gap with a dynamic examination of the origins and nature of the tradition. Based on a wealth of literary and historical documentation, this study places Tokugawa homosexuality in a global context, exploring its implications for contemporary debates on the historical construction of sexual desire. Combing through popular fiction, law codes, religious works, medical treatises, biographical material, and artistic treatments, Leupp traces the origins of pre-Tokugawa homosexual traditions among monks and samurai, then describes the emergence of homosexual practices among commoners in Tokugawa cities. He argues that it was "nurture" rather than "nature" that accounted for such conspicuous male/male sexuality and that bisexuality was more prevalent than homosexuality. Detailed, thorough, and very readable, this study is the first in English or Japanese to address so comprehensively one of the most complex and intriguing aspects of Japanese history.

Maiko Masquerade by Jan Bardsley Pdf

Maiko Masquerade explores Japanese representations of the maiko, or apprentice geisha, in films, manga, and other popular media as an icon of exemplary girlhood. Jan Bardsley traces how the maiko, long stigmatized as a victim of sexual exploitation, emerges in the 2000s as the chaste keeper of Kyoto’s classical artistic traditions. Insider accounts by maiko and geisha, their leaders and fans, show pride in the training, challenges, and rewards maiko face. No longer viewed as a toy for men’s amusement, she serves as catalyst for women’s consumer fun. This change inspires stories of ordinary girls—and even one boy—striving to embody the maiko ideal, engaging in masquerades that highlight questions of personal choice, gender performance, and national identity.

Work and Lifecourse in Japan by David W. Plath,Samuel Coleman Pdf

The durability of Japan’s industrial products now holds world acclaim. But the durability of jobs in Japan—despite misleading Western images of lifetime employment—is no better than in other industrial nations. The “group model” of Japanese society that has been in fashion in the West confuses the goals of an organization with the personal aims and aspirations of its members. Like workers anywhere, those in Japan must go through life reconciling their duties to the job with their often conflicting obligations to family, to community, and to self-respect. Career outcomes are anything but certain in Japan—once we see them from a worker’s point of view. Work and Lifecourse in Japan is a collection of workers’ eye-level reports on career development in a variety of Japanese organizations and professions. In addition, there are overview chapters on employment trends in the Japanese economy, and on the problems of scheduling one’s life-events in the demanding milieu of our post-industrial world.

Queer Japan from the Pacific War to the Internet Age by Mark McLelland Pdf

Scholarship on Japan has recently broadened to include minority perspectives on communities from marginal workers to those whose sexuality has long been overlooked. This volume, with its combination of fieldwork in the gay and lesbian communities and the use of historical sources such as journals and documents, breaks important new ground in this field. It examines gay life in the Japanese Pacific War, addresses transgender and lesbian as well as gay issues, examines the interface of queer society with the U.S. occupation and the international community, contests major interpretations of contemporary queer society, and introduces readers to the development of lesbian, transgender, and gay communities in postwar Japan.Queer Japan from the Pacific Age to the Internet Age provides a historical outline of the development of sexual-minority identity categories and community formation through a detailed analysis of both niche and mainstream publications, including magazines, newspapers, biographies, memoirs, and Internet sites. The material is also augmented with interview data from individuals who have had a long association with Japan's queer cultures.Including a wealth of images from the "perverse press," this book will appeal to students and general readers interested in modern and contemporary Japan and in gender studies and sexuality.
