Notes from Boomerang Creek by Cathy Salter Pdf

In Notes From Boomerang Creek, the author showcases the world situation and nature in a mindful way, observing both with both keen intent on putting her poetic pen to the page, just as an artist brushes pigment on canvas. Cathy makes daily scenes and ordinary people come to life through her evocative prose In journeys both local and distant, her sensitive observations and keen imagination take the reader into worlds they want to know better--or find in their own travels. Written with style and lyrical power, these essays show the positive side of life left too often left behind by us all. When looking back on travel adventures and reflecting on the human condition, it is natural to first remember the negative things when recounting our views, but it is the beauty of life and the hope for a better world that bring us so much joy. Cathy Salter has succeeded in finding joy in everyday life as will as extraordinary happenings, and she has painted each essay with uncommon vision for the reader's pleasure. "Cathy Salter has an artist's eye, a poet's ear, and a lover's heart. Her essays invite the reader to partake of a wondrous life filled with the joys of country walks, great books, travel to distant locales, and good food shared with dear friends. Pour yourself a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and settle in by the fire: You won't find a more rewarding place to spend time than Boomerang Creek." Matthew Goodman, bestselling author of Eighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History-Making Race Around the World

Innamincka Talk: A grammar of the Innamincka dialect of Yandruwandha with notes on other dialects by Gavan Breen Pdf

Innamincka Talk: A grammar of the Innamincka dialect of Yandruwandha with notes on other dialects is one of a pair of companion volumes on Yandruwandha, a dialect of the language formerly spoken on the Cooper and Strzelecki Creeks and the country to the north of the Cooper, in the northeast corner of South Australia and a neighbouring strip of Queensland. The other volume is entitledInnamincka Words. Innamincka Talk is the more technical work of the two and is intended for specialists and for interested readers who are willing to put some time and effort into studying the language.Innamincka Words is for readers, especially descendants of the original people of the area, who are interested in the language, but not necessarily interested in its more technical aspects. It is also a necessary resource for users of Innamincka Talk. These volumes document all that could be learnt from the last speakers of the language in the last years of their lives by a linguist who was involved with other languages at the same time. These were people who did not have a full knowledge of the culture of their forebears, but were highly competent, indeed brilliant, in the way they could teach what they knew to the linguist student.

The Hawkesbury River by Paul Boon Pdf

The Hawkesbury River is the longest coastal river in New South Wales. A vital source of water and food, it has a long Aboriginal history and was critical for the survival of the early British colony at Sydney. The Hawkesbury’s weathered shores, cliffs and fertile plains have inspired generations of artists. It is surrounded by an unparalleled mosaic of national parks, including the second-oldest national park in Australia, Ku-ring-gai National Park. Although it lies only 35 km north of Sydney, to many today the Hawkesbury is a ‘hidden river’ – its historical and natural significance not understood or appreciated. Until now, the Hawkesbury has lacked an up-to-date and comprehensive book describing how and when the river formed, how it functions ecologically, how it has influenced humans and their patterns of settlement and, in turn, how it has been affected by those settlements and their people. The Hawkesbury River: A Social and Natural History fills this gap. With chapters on the geography, geology, hydrology and ecology of the river through to discussion of its use by Aboriginal and European people and its role in transport, defence and culture, this highly readable and richly illustrated book paints a picture of a landscape worthy of protection and conservation. It will be of value to those who live, visit or work in the region, those interested in Australian environmental history, and professionals in biology, natural resource management and education.

What's Changing: Population Size Or Land-use Patterns? by Val Attenbrow Pdf

The Upper Mangrove Creek catchment was an ideal locality in which to undertake field investigation into Aboriginal use of the coastal hinterland. The area, 101 square kilometres in size, is rich in sites that provided significant archaeological evidence of Aboriginal use of the coastal hinterland. The catchment became the focus of major archaeological salvage work in the late 1970s, prior to the construction of the Mangrove Creek Dam. Further research, undertaken by Val Attenbrow, on the total catchment expanded upon the results of earlier work. This monograph describes the later research project and summarises the salvage program results. This evidence is used by the author to explore current research issues relating to the interpretation of the mid- to late-Holocene archaeological record in Australia, particularly quantitative changes relating to population numbers and aspects of human behaviour, such as risk management, subsistence, mobility and land-use patterns.
