Guide to Quebec Catholic Parishes and Published Parish Marriage Records by Jeanne Sauve White Pdf

The bulk of this work consists of county-by-county lists of parishes within the Province of Quebec, and all known Catholic parishes are listed to 1900. Each list gives the names of all the parishes within that county, arranged in order of formation, with the date of the oldest records for that parish. A reference letter and name after the parish indicates the compiler and publisher of a marriage register for that parish, or whether the marriages for that parish may be found in the important Loiselles Marriage Index.

Mary in Our Life by Nicholas Joseph Santoro Pdf

Mary In Our Life: An Atlas of the Names and Titles of Mary, The Mother of Jesus, and Their Place in Marian Devotion presents the 1,969 names, titles, and appellations used to identify the Blessed Virgin Mary over the centuries in terms of their history and related events. Within these titles and their history can be seen the official and private attitudes and prejudices of the times; government pressures, conflicts, and interdictions; internal problems within the Catholic Church; and startling examples of dedication, devotion, and piety. Taken together, Marian titles are a real-life story of the Catholic faith.

The Mystery Play in Madame Bovary Moeurs de Province by Peter Séraphin Rogers Pdf

Drawing upon Flaubert's fictional works, travel writings, correspondence, and notes on his reading of the Bible and interest in iconography, Rogers traces the presence of a liturgical drama, a mystery play, in a text known as iconic of the realist novel. Showing how Flaubert's use of religious tales, topoi, and imagery extends beyond his retelling of saints' lives in the Tentation de Saint Antoine and the Trois contes, this study elucidates the biblical and devotional subcurrent in the story of Emma Bovary. Biblical episodes, religious emblems, and discussions of Catholic dogma link the adulterous heroine to the Virgin Mary, who emerges in the course of this subtle reading as the other heroine of the scandalous story. The 19th-century impulse to censor is embodied within the novel by two characters representing the secular and religious poles. The free-thinking pharmacist Homais and the parish priest concur only on the dangers of reading the Bible. When the novel itself was brought to trial for attacking religion, Flaubert's prosecutor and defense lawyer overlooked this condemnation of scripture. This study invites readers to pay close attention to the religious texts and traditions discussed and restaged in Madame Bovary to gain a new awareness of the narrow bond between theatre and religion in Flaubert's provinces.

Marguerite Bourgeoys and Montreal, 1640-1665 by Patricia Simpson Pdf

Born and raised in Troyes, France, in 1653 Marguerite Bourgeoys came as a new recruit to de Maisonneuve's tiny and beleaguered settlement of Ville-Marie, founded in 1642 as a Christian missionary society. These early years in New France marked a special period in her life. Firmly committed to the belief that the world would be a better place if people learned to understand one another, she worked to build a better church and a better society, especially for women and children. Marguerite Bourgeoys's life story teaches us about tolerance and compassion, ideals that are no less important now than three centuries ago.

The Story of an Architect King by Renata Tyszczuk Pdf

In this book the author explores the representational strategies of the modern period and their relation to political life through the story of Stanislas Leszczynski, architect king and roi bienfaisant, 'a king that does good'. The ingredients of his story are compelling. They include: an exiled king (who makes a cameo appearance in Voltaire's Candide and corresponds with Rousseau); a collection of writings that include aphorisms, political treatises, and a utopian novel; gardens that include a grotto of eighty-six life-size automata and an experimental village of courtiers; and architecture and landscapes that traverse the contested boundaries of central Europe, imaginary constructions of the orient, and the borderlines between fact and fiction. These come together to make a distinctive account of the transitional period in eighteenth-century culture. Stanislas' architectural and literary works were rooted in an acceptance of the uncertainty of the world more characteristic of the story. His 'hope of a better age' emerges as an endeavour - through the writing and the architecture - to find one's own meaning in history as well as a model for the good life. His story suggests a way of exploring what this struggle still entails today.
