Agricultural Implications of the Fukushima Nuclear Accident by Tomoko M. Nakanishi,Keitaro Tanoi Pdf

Following the Fukushima nuclear accident, a large volume of monitoring data has been collected about the soil, air, dust, and seawater, along with data about an immense number of foods supplied to the market. Little is known, however, about the effect of radioactive fallout on agriculture, information about which is vital. Although more than 80% of the damaged area is related to agriculture, in situ information specifically for agriculture is scarce. This book provides data about the actual movement and accumulation of radioactivity in the ecological system—for example, whether debris deposited on mountains can be a cause of secondary contamination, under what conditions plants accumulate radioactive cesium in their edible parts, and how radioactivity is transferred from hay to milk. Because agriculture is so closely related to nature, many specialists with different areas of expertise must be involved in answering these questions. In the case of rice, researchers in rice cultivation as well as in soil, hydrology, and radioactivity measurement are working together to reveal the paths or accumulation of radioactivity in the field. For this purpose, the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences of The University of Tokyo has diverse facilities available throughout Japan, including farmlands, forests, and meadowlands. Many academic staff members have formed groups to conduct on-site research, with more than 40 volunteers participating. This book presents the data collected from the only project being systematically carried out across Japan after the Fukushima accident.

The Medical Implications of Nuclear War by Fred Solomon,Robert Q. Marston,Lewis Thomas,Steering Committee for the Symposium on the Medical Implications of Nuclear War,Institute of Medicine Pdf

Written by world-renowned scientists, this volume portrays the possible direct and indirect devastation of human health from a nuclear attack. The most comprehensive work yet produced on this subject, The Medical Implications of Nuclear War includes an overview of the potential environmental and physical effects of nuclear bombardment, describes the problems of choosing who among the injured would get the scarce medical care available, addresses the nuclear arms race from a psychosocial perspective, and reviews the medical needs--in contrast to the medical resources likely to be available--after a nuclear attack. "It should serve as the definitive statement on the consequences of nuclear war."--Arms Control Today

Food Irradiation by V.M Wilkinson Pdf

This reference is an ABC on food irradiation on the one hand and an encyclopedia of food irradiation on the other. The authors have painstakingly compiled all terminologies related to this technology and have listed items ranging from Aeromanos to Yersinia for microbiological aspects; from Apple to Poultry to Wheat which can benefit from irradiation; vitamins in food which may be affected by irradiation; regulatory aspects including various methods of detection of irradiated food; consumer acceptance and commercial applications to date, etc. -Paisan Loaharanu, Head, Food Preservation Section, Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, Vienna

Combination Processes for Food Irradiation by Co-ordinated Research Programme on Irradiation in Combination with Other Processes for Improving Food Quality. Research Co-ordination Meeting,Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture Pdf

Proceedings of a final research co-ordination meeting of the final research co-ordination programme on irradiation in combination with other processes for improving food quality organized by the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture, Pretoria, South Africa, 27 February - 3 March 1995. The proceedings contain the most up-to-date information on the use of irradiation in combination with other food processes for (1) a significant extension of the shelf-life of meat, fish, fruits and vegetables; (2) enhanced microbiological safety of fresh and processed food, including prepared meals; (3) expansion of the range of food irradiation applications, from individual food items to ready to eat food and shelf-stable meals; and (4) a reduction in energy requirements for food processing.

Strategies and Practices in the Remediation of Radioactive Contamination in Agriculture by International Atomic Energy Agency Pdf

This publication presents the proceedings of a workshop on the remediation of radioactive contamination in agriculture. The workshop brought together specialists from different countries and technical backgrounds and sought to disseminate research findings and encourage future studies aimed at the development of technologies to support sustainable agricultural production and rural development after a nuclear accident. The presentations and discussions at the meeting focused on both laboratory findings and practical field-work experience in planning and implementing remediation activities. The participants provided information related to agricultural production in Japan after the Fukushima Daiichi accident and in the many different countries affected by the Chernobyl accident. The workshop contributed to the dissemination of information and knowledge in this very distinct area and produced conclusions, recommendations and observations to enhance preparedness and response planning for nuclear emergencies and radiological incidents in relation to food and agriculture. This publication is targeted at authorities responsible for food and agriculture, international organizations working in this area, as well as professionals and academics involved in the remediation of radioactive contamination. It will also be of interest to nuclear safety or emergency planning and response specialist.
