Empowered Learning in Secondary Schools by Cynthia E. Hazel Pdf
Positive youth development is a strengths-based, positive psychology approach to fostering adolescents' educational engagement and achievement. It focuses not just on students' academic development but also on their vocational, social, and emotional development. The positive youth development philosophy is at the heart of Cynthia Hazel's unique model of secondary school change, which uses a multi-tiered system of support to challenge the status quo of widespread achievement gaps. In this thought-provoking book, Cynthia Hazel presents her positive youth development-multi-tiered system of support model, including its theoretical foundations, practical instructions for implementing the model, and case examples illustrating application. Recognising that students' own voices are critical to their empowerment and strong outcomes, the model calls for students to participate alongside parents, teachers, and administrators in designing and guiding the school's support structures. The resulting paradigm shift - truly empowered learning - offers hope for all secondary schools, especially those in which many students currently do not achieve postsecondary success.
This study examines academic departments as a context for teaching in the secondary school. lt explores why teachers find departments to be crucial to the high school setting. In all three schools studied and in all four subjects English, Maths, Science and Social Science teachers - even those who felt isolated in their classrooms - located their sense of professional identity, practice and community in their departments. Departments are seen as boundaries for dividing the school; centres of social interaction; a micro political decision-making forum; as a subject knowledge category. Those concerns are important at this time as various attacks are being made on school structures and subject and administration fragmentation - in these cases subjects are seen as obstacles to change. To subject groups they are viewed as potential vehicles to carry and confirm the message.
Reconstruction of the Secondary-School Curriculum by Walter Scott Monroe Pdf
Excerpt from Reconstruction of the Secondary-School Curriculum: Its Meaning and Trends The descriptions given in the preceding paragraphs make clear the impossibility of formulating a simple statement of the characteristics of our secondary schools. For the purpose of this bulletin, the writers have thought of the secondary school primarily in terms of the middle division of our educational system, formerly including grades nine to twelve but now frequently being extended to include also grades seven and eight. They have not included, except incidentally, either the small high school or the very large high school. In general, the writers have had the public high school in mind, but occasional reference has been made to secondary schools not supported by a general property tax. Teaching the 'Slow' Learner in the Secondary School by M. F. Cleugh Pdf
This book is a re-issue originally published in 1961. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication. Dr Cleugh was in charge of the course for teachers of so-called 'educationally sub-normal' children at the University of London Institute of Education. The three volumes of this work, which at the time took their place as complete and up-to-date guides to the subjects they cover, were written by practising teachers who had passed through the Institute’s course, and they cover every part of the curriculum from the point of view of the 'slow' learner. This volume focuses on the secondary school.
