Walking Backward by Catherine Austen Pdf

When Josh's mother dies in a phobia-induced car crash, she leaves two questions for her grieving family: how did a snake get into her car and how do you mourn with no faith to guide you? Twelve-year-old Josh is left alone to find the answers. His father is building a time machine. His four-year-old brother's closest friend is a plastic Power Ranger. His psychiatrist offers nothing more than a blank journal and platitudes. Isolated by grief in a home where every day is pajama day, Josh makes death his research project. He tests the mourning practices of religions he doesn't believe in. He tries to mend his little brother's shattered heart. He observes, records and waits—for his life to feel normal, for his mother's death to make sense, for his father to come out of the basement. His observations, recorded in a series of journal entries, are funny, smart, insightful—and heartbreaking. His conclusions about the nature of love, loss, grief and the space-time continuum are nothing less than life-changing.

Allyson's Journey, Backward by Suzanne Muir Pdf

For each of us, there is a point in time when the course of our actions taken will change or firmly seal the direction of our life. For fifty-five-year-old Allyson Gregory, her defining moment was when she was eighteen and a college freshman. Because of a brief fool-hearted relationship, she had become pregnant. When the boyfriend quickly fled town, her twin sister, Jackie, and their roommate, Bets, rallied around a frightened, brokenhearted Allyson to help her face that nightmare together. Every year, on August 8, Allyson relives the memory of the birth of her baby boy and then the painful time that followed when she gave him up for adoption. Because of her Christian upbringing, abortion was never an option. Adoption was the only avenue for the young Allyson. As the years passed, Allyson graduated college, met and married Kyle Gregory, and they had a daughter, Shelley Ann. Starting and building a pottery business with her sister, Jackie, gave her life enrichment with her family. Throughout all the events of those busy years, deep in the recesses of her heart and mind lingered the shadow of her baby boy. What has his life been like? Was he loved and cared for? Did he hate her for giving him up? She could not rest her thoughts on the all-important question: Was he all right? Often it is in the midst of difficulty that we find our greatest opportunities to experience God's love. We know that our trials are a part of our spiritual journey and that our Lord will mature us through the suffering as we submit to His will. I wanted to write a story about just such a woman, Allyson Gregory, facing and dealing with devastating loss. In Allyson's Journey, Backward, we meet the baby boy, Matthew Williamson, now a grown man and suffering from leukemia. Because of the urgency of this life-or-death situation, he is able to obtain his adoption papers to find his birth parents' information. He is humbled that she is anxious to help him through the bone marrow transplant process. Allyson gave him life once, and now she wants to help restore that life to good health. As the various characters weave themselves throughout the story, Allyson and Matthew rebuild their own lives with a renewed strength and pride. I hope you will be interested in reading the fictional story, Allyson's Journey, Backward, as I believe that the issue of teen pregnancy, abortion, and adoption is relevant to today's circumstances. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Understanding by Design by Grant P. Wiggins,Jay McTighe Pdf

What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Subnational Movements In South Asia by Subrata Mitra,R. Alison Lewis,Robert C Oberst,R Alison Lewis Pdf

The idea of the book initially emerged from a panel discussion at the Specialist Group on South Asia of the Political Studies Association, UK, in March 1993. On its tortuous path to publication, it has been enriched by critical comments from Sumit Ganguly, Vernon Hewitt, Iftikhar Malik, Gurharpal Singh and David Taylor. The volume has benefited fromSubrata Mitra's long association with the Centre for Indian Studies at the University of Hull and stimulating discussions with members of the Center for South Asian Studies and the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, during his sabbatical term (spring 1994). The contributions, although completed by summer 1994, recognise the ongoing changes throughout the region.

Synthesis and Control of Discrete Event Systems by Benoît Caillaud,Philippe Darondeau,Luciano Lavagno,Xiaolan Xie Pdf

This book aims at providing a view of the current trends in the development of research on Synthesis and Control of Discrete Event Systems. Papers col lected in this volume are based on a selection of talks given in June and July 2001 at two independent meetings: the Workshop on Synthesis of Concurrent Systems, held in Newcastle upon Tyne as a satellite event of ICATPN/ICACSD and organized by Ph. Darondeau and L. Lavagno, and the Symposium on the Supervisory Control of Discrete Event Systems (SCODES), held in Paris as a satellite event of CAV and organized by B. Caillaud and X. Xie. Synthesis is a generic term that covers all procedures aiming to construct from specifications given as input objects matching these specifications. The ories and applications of synthesis have been studied and developped for long in connection with logics, programming, automata, discrete event systems, and hardware circuits. Logics and programming are outside the scope of this book, whose focus is on Discrete Event Systems and Supervisory Control. The stress today in this field is on a better applicability of theories and algorithms to prac tical systems design. Coping with decentralization or distribution and caring for an efficient realization of the synthesized systems or controllers are of the utmost importance in areas so diverse as the supervision of embedded or man ufacturing systems, or the implementation of protocols in software or in hard ware.
