Pain, Death, and the Law by Austin Sarat Pdf

This collection of essays examines the relationship between pain, death, and the law and addresses the question of how the law constructs pain and death as jurisprudential facts. The empirical focus of these essays enables the reader to delve into both the history and the theoretical complexities of the pain-death-law relationship. The combination of the theoretical and the empirical broadens the contribution this volume will undoubtedly make to debates in which the right to live or die is the core issue at hand. This volume will be an important read for policy makers and legal practitioners and a valuable text for courses in law, the social sciences, and the humanities. Austin Sarat is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Science, Amherst College.

Death by Meeting by Patrick M. Lencioni Pdf

A straightforward framework for creating engaging and exciting business meetings Casey McDaniel had never been so nervous in his life. In just ten minutes, The Meeting, as it would forever be known, would begin. Casey had every reason to believe that his performance over the next two hours would determine the fate of his career, his financial future, and the company he had built from scratch. “How could my life have unraveled so quickly?” he wondered. In his latest page-turning work of business fiction, best-selling author Patrick Lencioni provides readers with another powerful and thought-provoking book, this one centered around a cure for the most painful yet underestimated problem of modern business: bad meetings. And what he suggests is both simple and revolutionary. Casey McDaniel, the founder and CEO of Yip Software, is in the midst of a problem he created, but one he doesn’t know how to solve. And he doesn’t know where or who to turn to for advice. His staff can’t help him; they’re as dumbfounded as he is by their tortuous meetings. Then an unlikely advisor, Will Peterson, enters Casey’s world. When he proposes an unconventional, even radical, approach to solving the meeting problem, Casey is just desperate enough to listen. As in his other books, Lencioni provides a framework for his groundbreaking model, and makes it applicable to the real world. Death by Meeting is nothing short of a blueprint for leaders who want to eliminate waste and frustration among their teams and create environments of engagement and passion.

Painful Death by Prince Kafain Emmanuel Mbeng Sr. Pdf

You can choose to mourn the loss of a loved one for the rest of your life, or you can choose to memorialize only the good times you enjoyed with him or her. You can also choose to exemplify aspects of his or her life, with emphasis and direct reference to elements of an ordeal that would be correctively meaningful to the general population. I have thus chosen to give grief to those who want to continue grieving, and dramatic relief and closure to those who have chosen to remember my son, Junior, with the belief that God's time is the best! Whatever choice you make will depend on you as an individual, and I can assure you that Taku and I have chosen to focus only on the joyous days that we enjoyed with our "Junior" when we had him here with us. I therefore urge his mother and everyone else to do same, for only then would those lamentations begin to dissipate and rejuvenate continuation of the pleasures of life, after such an emotionally painful loss. The loss of a child is the most devastating experience a parent can ever bear. June 29, 2018, has now been added to the calendar for celebrations in my family, but unlike the conventional birthday celebrations, it is the day that my son, Emmanuel Kafain Mbeng Jr., famously nicknamed JUNIOR, went to be with his maker. His departure from this earth has paralyzed my zeal to live and enjoy life and brought tears of regrets to my eyes--regrets for inability to prevent his death at a time when I was supposed to need him and his brother most. He continues to live in me, and I try to visit him as many times as I can, hoping to ease my pain of loss, to be able to remain strong for all in my family who depend on me. Junior was a smart kid, who grew up to be as caring, compassionate, and partially responsible; and he was full of life, wanting to be a star in music and not in the athletic sports that he excelled in. His love of freedom drove him to do crazy adventures, just like most ambitious kids his age, but his understanding of independence, or lack thereof, was obliterated by an unproductive self-consciousness that would end his life before allowing him time to rethink it over, and leave his loved ones wondering daily what they all could have missed. Read this book to the end, even if it is just to provide yourself with experience on what to expect when you confront your kids. Of course, no matter how rambunctious your kids may be, you must never take their well-being for granted, lest you become a victim of conditional love. The loss of a child is truly devastating and a parent's worst nightmare. Prince Kafain Emmanuel Mbeng Sr. shares the loss of his son hoping that other parents can learn from his experience. You have just lost your child and gone through an emotionally draining mourning period, and the pain of the loss is with you forever. Everyone says it will go away eventually, but only you know how you feel and what you are going through, and mindful of the shortcomings of that fateful day that has become a day of reckoning and apprehension for you and your family; mindful of all parental awareness difficulties and constant fears; mindful of the challenges of overcoming the loss; and mindful of all the rants from the father, mother, and members of the community of friends and family, the loss of a child remains the worst nightmare in the life of a parent. It is with much emotional pain that the author, Prince Kafain Emmanuel Mbeng Sr. has chosen to embark on this honest declaration that should serve as a wake-up call to every parent who is taking the challenges of parenting for granted. It could be you!

A Slow, Painful Death Would Be Too Good for You (and Other Observations): A Pillow Book for Dyspeptics by David Roddis Pdf

Gather 'round, peeps, for some sparkling, startling lessons in old-school fabulousness, including a bitch-slap from Big Gay Pope David; a breathtaking ride on a "Gigolo;" and even a photography master class with that insufferable Canadian superstar and adulte terrible David DeLaRoddis,"The Guy With The Eye." In this debut collection of personal essays -- a veritable treasure trove of bons mots and quirky alter egos, as well as a tongue-in-cheek memoir and a rallying cry of queer solidarity -- David Roddis aims his wry, devastating wit at Canadian and U.S. politics, pineapple Freezies and just about everything in between, not sparing himself a few self-deprecating jabs in the process. Blending sixty-plus years of defiant survival into vintage Champagne, and with a voice that runs the gamut from caustic to camp, satirical to lyrical, Roddis ultimately reminds us that, however desperate the situation may appear, it's never serious.

The Pain from the Death of a Spouse by Buddy Rogers Pdf

Once you turn the page of life, you cannot turn it back. The Pain from the Death of a Spouse revisits life with the living and documents the death, pain, and sorrow that will eventually come to every marriage. This book introduces a door that every married couple will walk through, usually not together. A door that we dont like to acknowledge or even admit exists. It is the door of reality. One spouse will die before the other in almost every marriage. My spouse walked through the door and left me on the opposite side. This is my story after the door closed behind her. It is a story that speaks to the soul of mankind about life, love, marriage, death, and sorrow. You might ask, What gives the author the insight, the expertise, the knowledge, and the experience to write about the pain that one suffers from the death of a family member? Perhaps its the pain he suffered from the death of his nineteen-year-old sister, and perhaps its the pain he suffered from the death of his father, and perhaps its the pain he suffered from the death of his mother, and perhaps its the pain he suffered from the death of his brother, and perhaps its the pain he suffered from the death of his spouse of fifty-five years, or maybe its the love, support, and comfort God gave him during each of these deaths.

Women, Pain and Death by Evy Johanne Håland Pdf

“Women, Pain and Death: Rituals and Everyday-Life on the Margins of Europe and Beyond” is a cross-cultural and multidisciplinary collection of articles representing different perspectives and topics related to the general theme Women and Death from different periods and parts of Europe, as well as the Middle East and Asia, i.e. areas where, through the ages, there have been a constant interaction and discourse between a variety of people, often with different ethnic backgrounds. The studies illustrate many parallels between the various societies and religious groupings, despite of many differences, both in time and space. The theme, death, is mostly seen from what have been regarded as the geographical margins of society as well as concerning the people involved: women. Thus, the articles, most of them presenting original material from areas which are not very known for English readers, offer new perspectives on the processes of cultural changes. The collection has important ramification for current research surrounding the shaping of a “European identity”, the marketing of regional and national heritages. In connection with the present-day aim of connecting the various European heritages, and developing a vision of Europe and its constituent elements that is both global and rooted, the work has great relevance. One may also mention the new international initiative on intangible heritage, spearheaded by UNESCO.

Mortally Wounded by Michael Kearney Pdf

What makes for a good death? In Mortally Wounded, a best-seller in Ireland where it was first published, Dr. Michael Kearney reflects upon his experiences working with the dying and shows us that it is possible to learn to die well, overcoming our fears and soul pain and accepting death as an integral part of life.Believing that the root of the pain we face when dying is often a persona and cultural disconnection from soul, Dr. Kearney advocates a personal quest inward-and downward-the re-engage with this deepest part of our being. He shows how psychological techniques, such as dream analysis and visualization exercises, combined with mythological insights, can help us on this journey. He finds in the Greek myth of the wounded centaur, Chiron, a metaphor for this process-it is only after descending to the underworld for nine days and nights that Chiron finds relief from his pain and suffering and discovers a path that reaches to the heavens.Careful attention to our spiritual health, Kearney urges, is an essential complement to physical or outer care. Inner or "depth" work can, he believes, enables us to find our "own way through the prison of soul pain to a place of greater wholeness, a new depth of living, and a falling away from fear.

When Children Die by Institute of Medicine,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on Palliative and End-of-Life Care for Children and Their Families Pdf

The death of a child is a special sorrow. No matter the circumstances, a child's death is a life-altering experience. Except for the child who dies suddenly and without forewarning, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel usually play a central role in the lives of children who die and their families. At best, these professionals will exemplify "medicine with a heart." At worst, families' encounters with the health care system will leave them with enduring painful memories, anger, and regrets. When Children Die examines what we know about the needs of these children and their families, the extent to which such needs areâ€"and are notâ€"being met, and what can be done to provide more competent, compassionate, and consistent care. The book offers recommendations for involving child patients in treatment decisions, communicating with parents, strengthening the organization and delivery of services, developing support programs for bereaved families, improving public and private insurance, training health professionals, and more. It argues that taking these steps will improve the care of children who survive as well as those who do notâ€"and will likewise help all families who suffer with their seriously ill or injured child. Featuring illustrative case histories, the book discusses patterns of childhood death and explores the basic elements of physical, emotional, spiritual, and practical care for children and families experiencing a child's life-threatening illness or injury.

Bereavement by Institute of Medicine,Committee for the Study of Health Consequences of the Stress of Bereavement Pdf

"The book is well organized, well detailed, and well referenced; it is an invaluable sourcebook for researchers and clinicians working in the area of bereavement. For those with limited knowledge about bereavement, this volume provides an excellent introduction to the field and should be of use to students as well as to professionals," states Contemporary Psychology. The Lancet comments that this book "makes good and compelling reading....It was mandated to address three questions: what is known about the health consequences of bereavement; what further research would be important and promising; and whether there are preventive interventions that should either be widely adopted or further tested to evaluate their efficacy. The writers have fulfilled this mandate well."
