Pasture Grasses and Forage Plants, and Their Seeds, Weeds, and Parasites (Classic Reprint) by Samuel P. Preston Pdf

Excerpt from Pasture Grasses and Forage Plants, and Their Seeds, Weeds, and Parasites Others again advocate the use of forage plants and grasses hitherto unknown to our agriculture, and so far has all this gone that a large section of the agricultural public is puzzled what guide to follow. Again it may be noted - ii one may draw inferences from the queries addressed to the agricultural press, and from the results of many conversations held by the writer with farmers, and with people who sell seeds in different parts of the United Kingdom - that there is a surprising lack of information on the subject of the parasites that injure or destroy the forage plants and the weeds that rob or stifle them. Pasture Grasses and Forage Plants, and Their Seeds, Weeds, and Parasites by Samuel P. Preston Pdf

Excerpt from Pasture Grasses and Forage Plants, and Their Seeds, Weeds, and Parasites Latterly there has been much discussion and divergence of opinion regarding the comparative merits of the different cultivated grasses. Some authorities praising beyond measure certain varieties and depreciating others; while other authorities as strenuously advocate the opposite. Others again advocate the use of forage plants and grasses hitherto unknown to our agriculture, and so far has all this gone that a large section of the agricultural public is puzzled what guide to follow. Pastures and Pasture Plants (Classic Reprint) by William Toogood Pdf

Excerpt from Pastures and Pasture Plants In the compilation of a treatise on any craft, the recorded experience of great authorities must of necessity be consulted, if not, to some extent, form the basis of such treatise; and though we have striven in the pages following to concisely summarise chiefly our own experiences in pasture-making from carefully kept records covering nearly 100 years' work, we have great pleasure in specially acknowledging our indebtedness to the following works: - 1. The scattered writings of Mr. William Carruthers, F.R.S., F.L.S., the accomplished consulting botanist to the Royal Agricultural Society, who unites to Sinclair's exact knowledge of pasture plants probably the most precise and extended acquaintance with English pastures ever yet attained, and to whose kindly and untiring courtesy is due much of what merit may lie in this manual. 2. The scattered writings of Sir John Bennett Lawes, F.R.S., LL.D., of Rothamsted, whose profound knowledge of the subjects he has made his own is equalled by his willingness to impart information, and to whom also we owe much special and invaluable help. 3. The works, especially The Best Forage Plants, a laborious and singularly accurate translation from the German by Mr. A. N. McAlpine, B.Sc, botanist to the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, and Les Melanges de Graines Fourrageres, done into French by M. C. Denaiffe, of Dr. G. Stebler, whose long experience as Director of the Swiss Experiment and Seed Control Station enables him to speak with special authority on forage plants and their seeds, and whose esteemed and kind assistance we gratefully acknowledge. 4. G. Sinclair's Hortus Gramineus Woburnensis, still our standard work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Fodder Crops and Amenity Grasses by Beat Boller,Ulrich K. Posselt,Fabio Veronesi Pdf

Grassland farming in Europe was already established during the settlement of the rst farmers together with their domesticated animals after the last ice age. Since then, grassland provides the forage basis to feed ruminant animals for the p- duction of meat and milk. Depending on the ecological conditions and intensity of usage, various plant communities with different species developed, displaying a rich biodiversity. With the introduction of improved crop rotations at the end of the 16th century, grasses and legumes were also grown to an important extent as forage crops on arable land. In the last decades the importance of amenity grasses increased markedly, due to the demand of the society for new usages like landscape protection. Around 1900 interested farmers and academics identi ed the need for gra- land improvement through systematic selection and seed production. This marks the beginning of breeding and research in companies but also at universities and specialized research institutes. Plant collection started with many of the species that are still of importance today. The collected materials were grouped according to the intended use and some type of phenotypic selection was applied. Seed mul- plication of such populations was performed in pure stands and the harvested seed was marketed. Although the vegetative biomass and its quality are of utmost imp- tance in forage crop breeding, it is the seed yield potential which determines the commercial success of a new variety.

A Guide to the Common Forages and Weeds of Pastures by Robert L. Kallenbach,Gregory J. Bishop-Hurley Pdf

Forages are the foundation of a successful grazing operation. From a biological perspective, there are three important concepts to understand when planning a forage system: (1) forage yield and yield distribution; (2) forage quality; and (3) stand persistence or reliability. Although all three factors are interrelated, this guide looks at each of them separately. It also discusses types of forages: cool-season grasses, warm-season grasses, legumes, and other; and types of weeds: grasses and grass-like weeds, and broadleaf weeds. The guide also includes a glossary of terms and a diagram showing the anatomy of a grass tiller. Color photos.
