Buying List of Books for Small Libraries (Classic Reprint) by Zaidee Brown Pdf

Excerpt from Buying List of Books for Small Libraries As the following list is intended merely as an aid in buying, regular cataloging rules have not been followed. It should there fore not be used as a guide for the form of the author's name. When there is a choice, the best known form of the author's name or a well-known pseudonym is used. In this edition there is no change from the character of the first list. The same general arrangement is retained and in most cases the same subject headings used. Every class is thoroughly revised and while there is a slight increase in the number of titles in sociology, science, useful arts and amusements, it results in a net increase of but 78 titles in the entire list. The fewest changes are in the list of children's books. One or two good inexpensive editions of standard books are added and some of the strikingly good stories of the past two years included. In a small library it is not important to buy the very latest child's story. To buy the best must be the aim of a library in the purchase of its children's books. A Library Primer (Classic Reprint) by John Cotton Dana Pdf

Excerpt from A Library Primer At the request of a number of people interested I have revised, rewritten, and extended the original draft for publication in book form. Additional material has been taken from many sources. I have tried to give credit in good measure. The prevailing tendency among librarians is to share ideas, to give to one another the benefit of all their suggestions and experiences. The result is a large fund of library knowledge which is common prop erty. From this fund most of this book is taken. Cataloging for Small Libraries (Classic Reprint) by Theresa Hitchler Pdf

Excerpt from Cataloging for Small Libraries The books of every library, no matter how small it may he, should be classified, preferably according to some well known system, like the Dewey Decimal classification, for example. It always saves time, confusion, and money in the long run, if a library is started on a proper basis. You may think you can do without this and that until some future time, but you will find that it pays in the end to get and to do the needful things in the very beginning. The time comes but too quickly when an imperfect, makeshift system overpowers you. DO not postpone too freely and too readily. A Plan of Organization for Small Libraries by Mrs. Minnie Clarke Budlong Pdf

Excerpt from A Plan of Organization for Small Libraries: Methods of Work, Lists of Supplies and Aids It is recommended that all orders for books be made out on book order cards which will be kept and form the shelf list. In libraries too small to be classified the books will be recorded by accession number and shelved alphabetically by author. All methods of work from the selection of the book until it is ready for circulation and eventually with drawn are described in detail and lists of supplies needed are given with prices. There are suggestions and lists of aids for equipment, for care of books, for library economics, for publicity and allied activities. A brief history of the library movement in America leads to the relations between the librarian and the board, the schools, the teachers and the community; and to suggestions given for making the library an attractive center in the town life. Hints to Small Libraries (Classic Reprint) by Mary Wright Plummer Pdf

Excerpt from Hints to Small Libraries Admitting the wisdom of the saying that "children should be seen and not heard" and the fact that Pratt Institute 1 Free library is still of tender years, it is also not to be denied that there comes a time when even children must speak and abide by the consequences. The library has had so many letters from persons at a distance, as well as many visitors, asking advice or suggestions in regard to the starting or reorganizing of small libraries or the best methods of carrying them on, that it seems best to put its suggestions into tangible form. They profess to be no more than suggestions; some of them the library has tried, others it has heard of and thought reasonable. The main endeavor throughout these few chapters has been to keep in mind the fact that there are libraries scattered all over the country that have very little of anything but ambition and good will to go upon. Their stock of money, labor, and time is limited, wherefore it is of no use to recommend to them tools or processes that require much of these commodities. The trained librarian will not feel the need of such a pamphlet as this, since he or she probably knows of or could evolve a system equally well or better adapted to the circumstances, so the audience sifts itself down to small libraries which have to consider economy, whose librarians are not trained and have no opportunity to take training. And even for them, it is hoped these suggestions may be only a point of departure from which to continue their own investigations in the field of library economy. Classification of Books by Lloyd P. Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Classification of Books: A Paper Read Before the American Library Association, May, 1882 The classification is intended to be permanent only so far as the six main classes A E I O U and Y, and their sub-classes a, b, c, d, e, etc., are concerned. In its details it is Open to modification to suit the needs of libraries devoted mainly to the collection of one or a few classes of books. AS the volumes multiply on the shelves, it is Obvious that the divisions 1, 2, 3, 4, etc., can be added to indefinitely, - by each librarian for himself - without deranging the system. Moreover, the divisions can themselves be subdivided by supplying arbitrary marks. For example, under Zoology (i I have made but one subdivision, that of Birds (i16 whereas an Academy of Natural Sciences might well find it expedient to distribute their works on the animal kingdom in accordance with the elaborate plan set forth in Agassiz's Essay on Classification. On the other hand, a small library may content itself with the classes and sub-classes marked by letters only, or even with the classes A E I O U Y alone. It is to be remarked in passing that, by this arrangement, whatever improvements may be made from time to time in the details of the system, the books have always a relative, and not a fixed location on the shelves. So that they may be moved from shelf to shelf, from case to case, and from building to building, without altering the Shelf marks. The system is available, not only for the arrangement of books on the shelves, but also for their classification in a subject catalogue. Indeed, the shelf lists them selves form - when properly made - a subject catalogue, which may be sent Off to the printer as soon as there is money enough to pay for setting them Up in type. It is true that most of the ends of a subject catalogue may be gained by the modern dic tionary catalogue - combining authors and subjects in one alphabet - which it is to the credit Of Mr. Poole to have invented, and Of Messrs. Cutter, Noyes, and others to have developed; but, nevertheless, to my mind, the ideal printed catalogue is a classified one, with a cepious alphabetical index. Suppose that the British Museum had such a printed catalogue to-day, how much would the usefulness of that great Institution be enhanced! The Public Library (Classic Reprint) by Ernest A. Baker Pdf

Excerpt from The Public Library In this brief account Of our public libraries, the work they have done and the far greater work they are capable Of doing, many points have been suggested that call for more comprehensive legis lation. The one hope now is that the urban and rural libraries already existing or soon to be may be co-ordinated into a national system, or group Of systems, worked on economic lines, and em powered to act the part they were surely destined for in a Civilized world. Sociologists, including those treating Of edu cation in the widest sense, have paid scant atten tion to the part played by the public library in social life, in the present or the future. Even such an inventory Of our intellectual assets as the Cambridge History Of English Literature has in its fifteen big volumes no reference to the effects Of the Ewart Act or to the vast collections of liter ature amassed and thrown open to the people through its operation. This book will be a small addition to a very small group Of works on various sides of a momentous subject. The author is deeply indebted to Mr. W. C. Berwick Sayers, Chief Librarian, Croydon Public Libraries, for his kindness in reading the proofs and for many useful suggestions, and to his daughter, Miss Ruth Baker, for indexing the book.
