Multi-Photon Quantum Information Science and Technology in Integrated Optics by Jonathan C.F. Matthews Pdf

Photons are an attractive option for testing fundamental quantum physics and developing new quantum-enhanced technology, including highly advanced computers and simulators, as well as precision sensing beyond shot-noise. Traditionally, bulk optical components have been bolted onto optical benches to realize metre-scale quantum circuits. However this approach is ultimately proving unwieldy for increasing the complexity and for scaling up to practical quantum technologies based on photons. The work presented here demonstrates a series of quantum photonic devices based on waveguide circuits embedded in miniature monolithic chips. This represents a paradigm shift in the underlying architecture of quantum optics and provides key building blocks for all-optical and hybrid quantum technologies.

Integrated Quantum Photonics by Shinichi Saito,Yong Zhang,Qin Wang Pdf

manipulating the inherent properties of quantum mechanics to develop a wide variety of novel technologies. Photons are nearly ideal carriers of quantum information (flying quantum bits), due to their weak interaction with environments and relatively long coherence time. Owing to these outstanding characteristics, they are widely implemented not only in constructing quantum computing, but also in developing quantum communication. Quantum technologies based on photons will potentially require integrated optical architecture for improved performance, such as easy miniaturization and good scalability. Although plenty of experiments on quantum information have been performed with bulk optics, for those complicated schemes, they will inevitably suffer from severe drawbacks, such as poor stability, quite limited operation precision and rather bulky physical size etc. One promising candidate on conquering these weaknesses is to adopt miniaturized optical integrated devices. Until today, a large number of great researches on this aspect have been issued on different platforms.

It describes novel experiments at the limit of single photons, and presents advances in this emerging research area. It also includes reprints and historical descriptions of some of the first pioneering experiments at a single-photon level and nonlinear optics, performed before the inception of lasers and modern light detectors, often with the human eye serving as a single-photon detector. The book comprises 19 chapters, 10 of which describe modern quantum photonics results, including single-photon sources, direct measurement of the photon's spatial wave function, nonlinear interactions and non-classical light, nanophotonics for room-temperature single-photon sources, time-multiplexed methods for optical quantum information processing, the role of photon statistics in visual perception, light-by-light coherent control using metamaterials, nonlinear nanoplasmonics, nonlinear polarization optics, and ultrafast nonlinear optics in the mid-infrared.

Nano-photonics in III-V Semiconductors for Integrated Quantum Optical Circuits by Nicholas Andrew Wasley Pdf

This thesis breaks new ground in the physics of photonic circuits for quantum optical applications. The photonic circuits are based either on ridge waveguides or photonic crystals, with embedded quantum dots providing the single qubit, quantum optical emitters. The highlight of the thesis is the first demonstration of a spin-photon interface using an all-waveguide geometry, a vital component of a quantum optical circuit, based on deterministic single photon emission from a single quantum dot. The work makes a further important contribution to the field by demonstrating the effects and limitations that inevitable disorder places on photon propagation in photonic crystal waveguides, a further key component of quantum optical circuits. Overall the thesis offers a number of highly novel contributions to the field; those on chip circuits may prove to be the only means of scaling up the highly promising quantum-dot-based quantum information technology.

Integrated Photonics in Quantum State by Paul B. Turbeville Pdf

Nonlinear photonics has provided a scientific cornerstone for a majority of modern technology during the past half-century, such as diversifying laser wavelengths, manufacturing nanostructures, and guiding the design of telecommunication systems. Moreover, it keeps supporting the emergence of novel applications, including high-resolution spectroscopy, atomic clocks, and especially quantum technology. However, in photonic quantum state engineering, current recipes for design and modeling are impotent in specific quantum applications, for which advanced techniques are urgently needed. In this dissertation, the quantum-level interplay between the linear response of integrated photonic devices and multiple nonlinearities within the system has been investigated in detail. We utilize these interactions to manage the generation of limit-breaking quantum photonic states, including customized temporal-spectral entanglement, high-brightness quantum sources, and high-purity quantum states.

Complexity and Control in Quantum Photonics by Peter Shadbolt Pdf

This work explores the scope and flexibility afforded by integrated quantum photonics, both in terms of practical problem-solving, and for the pursuit of fundamental science. The author demonstrates and fully characterizes a two-qubit quantum photonic chip, capable of arbitrary two-qubit state preparation. Making use of the unprecedented degree of reconfigurability afforded by this device, a novel variation on Wheeler’s delayed choice experiment is implemented, and a new technique to obtain nonlocal statistics without a shared reference frame is tested. Also presented is a new algorithm for quantum chemistry, simulating the helium hydride ion. Finally, multiphoton quantum interference in a large Hilbert space is demonstrated, and its implications for computational complexity are examined.
