The Non-Thrombotic Role of Platelets in Health and Disease by Steve W. Kerrigan,Niamh Moran Pdf

Platelets play a key role in thrombosis and haemostasis. However recent evidence clearly demonstrates that the functional role of platelets extends to many other processes in the body. With an internationally recognised list of contributing authors, The Non-Thrombotic Role of Platelets in Health and Disease, is a unique and definitive source of state-of-the-art knowledge about the additional role of platelets outside thrombosis and haemostasis. The intended audience for The Non-Thrombotic Role of Platelets in Health and Disease includes platelet biologists, microbiologists, immunologists, haematologists, oncologists, respiratory physicians, cardiologists, neurobiologists, tissue engineers, as well as students and fellows in these areas.

Platelet-Vessel Wall Interactions in Hemostasis and Thrombosis by Rolando E. Rumbaut Pdf

Platelets are essential mediators of the physiologic process of hemostasis and pathologic thrombosis. While platelets do not interact with vascular walls under normal conditions, vascular injury or inflammation result in a coordinated series of events including platelet adhesion, aggregation, and promotion of coagulation. In this review, we describe the primary mechanisms involved in these responses in various vascular beds of both macro- and microvessels, and outline key unresolved aspects of these important interactions.

Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease by Deepak L. Bhatt Pdf

Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease provides an in-depth and current coverage of relevant platelet biology and antiplatelet therapy that is in clinical use today and potentially for the future. The book provides a succinct overview of the critical role of platelets in cardiovascular medicine. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, and recent research has found that the platelet is central to the genesis of heart attacks and stroke as well as many of the complications of angioplasty and bypass surgery. An explosion of knowledge of the biology of platelets has established their important role in the formation of blood clots and, perhaps more intriguingly, their role as inflammatory cells. This growth in information has been paralleled by the development of several drugs that can interfere with platelet action and thereby improve patient outcomes. Indeed, several antiplatelet drugs already in development may ultimately lead to marked advances in both the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Drawing upon a panel of international experts, Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease delivers a concise yet thorough review of the major developments in antiplatelet therapy. Practicing clinicians as well as those involved in the development of new antithrombotic therapies will find the book interesting and useful. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Platelet Biology the Role of Platelets in Hemostasis, Thrombosis and Inflammation (274 KB). The Platelet and its Disorders by B.G. Firkin Pdf

The aim of this book is to introduce the medical student, recent medical graduates involved in postgraduate training and physicians in practice to the role of the platelet in physiology and disease. It is not intended to be an encyclopaedic review of all the literature over the past few decades, but largely represents a personal account, and although resultant prejudices occur, an attempt has been made to emphasize to the reader areas of doubt, and point the way to other sources which may explore these questions more fully in selected references at the end of each chapter. I acknowledge the help of my secretaries, Ms Carolyn Harvey and Mrs Marjorie Brown without whom the book would never have been started, let alone completed. Some illustrations and figures were made by Mr W. Shepherd of Monash University and Ms A. Leaman of the Alfred Hospital. I am indebted to Mrs E. Hagon who read and corrected a number of the chapters, and for the constant help through discussion and debate with my two close collaborators in research, Dr Margaret Howard and Dr Sharron pfueller. Dr Siew Choong, Mrs Maureen Broadway and Ms Ilona Lakatos documented the methods used in our laboratory to study platelets as outlined in the Appendix.

Platelet Disorders by Ravindra Sarode Pdf

This issue focuses on platelet disorders that are routinely encountered by practicing hematologists. Since there is a rapidly expanding body of information currently available in this discipline, we have assembled a wide variety of topics by experts in their respective fields. For example, the chapter on assessment of platelet function covers standard assay methods as well as more advanced testing and point of care tests. Similarly, recent advances in the management of heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) are discussed by authors who have performed original research in these areas. Other interesting topics include anti-platelet drug therapy, drug-induced thrombocytopenia and current evidence-based platelet transfusion therapy. Apart from congenital and acquired platelet dysfunction, a chapter on hyperactive platelets is included because evidence is emerging that supports the hypothesis that increased platelet function can cause thrombotic disorder. It is our sincere hope that this compendium of articles will ease the burden of the practicing hematologist and simplify the task of treating patients with platelet disorders
