Positively Powerless by L.L. Martin Pdf

Thou shalt not be negative. A vast movement of positive thinking took the twentieth century by storm and engulfed every area of our lives—including our churches. Put simply, positive thinking became a part of what it means to be an American. But should it be part of what it means to be a Christian? L.L. Martin exposes the eye-opening history of this movement, documenting its roots in occult, mystical, and Eastern religious ideas. Though Christianity came under its power, the two philosophies stand in stark conflict. As a result, Christ was dethroned and the self was made sovereign, rewiring our minds and weakening our faith. This practical book, immersed in Scripture, seeks to reestablish you in a God-centered life. • Deepen your spiritual walk by embracing honesty. • Discover the neglected paradoxes of Christian living. • Learn to live in the grace by which you were saved. Positively Powerless will help you detect the false gospel of positivity and reconnect to your true source of power: the gospel of Jesus Christ. *** Includes questions for personal reflection or group discussion.

Why Isn't Government Policy More Preventive? by Paul Cairney,Emily St Denny Pdf

If 'prevention is better than cure', why isn't policy more preventive? Policymakers only have the ability to pay attention to, and influence, a tiny proportion of their responsibilities, and they engage in a policymaking environment of which they have limited understanding and even less control. This simple insight helps explain the gap between stated policymaker expectations and actual policy outcomes. Why Isn't Government Policy more Preventive? uses these insights to produce new empirical studies of 'wicked' problems with practical lessons. The authors find that the UK and Scottish governments both use a simple idiom - prevention is better than cure - to sell a package of profound changes to policy and policymaking. Taken at face value, this focus on 'prevention' policy seems like an idea 'whose time has come'. Yet, 'prevention' is too ambiguous until governments give it meaning. No government has found a way to turn this vague aim into a set of detailed, consistent, and defendable policies. This book examines what happens when governments make commitments without knowing how to deliver them. It compares their policymaking contexts, roles and responsibilities, policy styles, language, commitments, and outcomes in several cross-cutting policy areas (including health, families, justice, and employability) to make sense of their experiences. The book uses multiple insights from policy theory to help research and analyse the results. The results help policymakers reflect on how to avoid a cycle of optimism and despair when trying to solve problems that their predecessors did not.

Persuasion in the Media Age by Timothy Borchers Pdf

Persuasion in the Media Age addresses the impact of electronic media on the practice of persuasion and reviews constantly evolving digital strategies. Today’s world demands a new perspective on persuasion—one that is grounded in the assumption that human consciousness and culture have been forever altered by communication technology. The fourth edition provides timely examples of persuasion in political campaigns, social movements, marketing, and interpersonal relationships—and the role of social media and media technologies in all of the contexts. From advertisers to politicians to influencers to friends, persuaders use increasingly sophisticated strategies to sway behavior. Borchers skillfully weaves theory, research, and engaging examples to help readers understand the practice of social influence—and to apply critical-thinking skills to the persuasion they encounter daily. The text takes an interdisciplinary approach to provide the latest thinking on persuasion while also drawing on a broad theoretical base for foundational concepts, such as attitudes, rhetoric, and human motivation. Throughout, Borchers emphasizes audience, storytelling, visual images, and ethics. This comprehensive, insightful, and accessible overview of persuasive communication teaches readers how to be skilled creators of persuasive messages—as well as critical consumers.

Toilers of Babylon by B. L. Farjeon Pdf

Toilers of Babylon by B. L. Farjeon is about the western travels of young Nansie and her adventurous pioneer of a father. Excerpt: "A peculiar feature of the caravan was that it was commercially empty. In times gone by it had been used for trading and speculative purposes, by gypsies, by enterprising travelers, by vendors of baskets, by dealers in birds. It had served as mart and dwelling-house and had played its part in numberless fairs when they were in fashion. Now it contained nothing marketable, and bore about it no sign to denote that its denizens were traveling for profit; but that, even in its old age, it was being put to pleasant use was proved by the smoke curling from the little chimney projecting through the roof."

Purpose, Meaning, and Action by K. McClelland,T. Fararo Pdf

Control Systems Theory, a newly developing theoretical perspective, starts from an important insight into human behaviour: that people attempt to control the world around them as they perceive it. This book brings together for the first time the work of prominent sociologists contributing to the development of this wideranging theoretical paradigm.
