Post-Operative Neuropsychiatric Disorder by Chun Yang,Yiying Zhang,Jie Sun,Yasushi Satoh,Diansan Su Pdf

Post-operative neuropsychiatric disorder (POND) is a series of neuropsychiatric symptoms strongly linked to the triggering factors, anesthesia, and surgery exposure. The clinical manifestations mainly include delirium, cognitive dysfunction, and affective disorders after surgeries. POND is the most frequent postoperative complication in elderly patients, especially those undergoing major surgery, such as cardiac and hip surgeries. It has been well recognized that oxidative stress, abnormal changes in neurotransmitters and synapses, as well as Aβ deposition, and phosphorylation of tau protein are probably involved in the mechanisms of POND. Although studies on the POND are in full swing, underlying pathogenesis is still ambiguous because of conflicting results and controversial evidence. Currently, patients with POND still fail to receive effective treatments, although clinical studies in this field have focused on these potential therapeutic targets in the last decades. Most importantly, more than 320 million people are scheduled to undergo surgeries every year globally, it is, therefore, an urgent need to develop and provide effective therapeutic strategies for patients with POND.

Neuropsychological Assessment of Neuropsychiatric Disorders by Igor Grant,Kenneth M. Adams Pdf

A 1996 survey of the members of the American Board of Professional Psychology Diplomates, published by The Clinical Neuropsychologist journal, selected the first edition of this book as one of the "Essential Books and Journals in North American Clinical Neuropsychology"--a list which included only 10 other titles! The Second Edition has improved further on this high standard. While the authors have retained the same general structure--with the addition of a set of three chapters on psychosocial outcomes--virtually the entire book has been rewritten and thoroughly updated to reflect recent developments in this area of knowledge. Part I features new chapters on the Iowa-Benton approach, on cognitive screening methods, and on computers and memory. Part II has been expanded with new chapters on Tourette's syndrome, acute and chronic hypoxemia, HIV infection, schizophrenia, Huntington's disease, and an expanded chapter on Parkinson's disease. Part III is entirely new, and it focuses on life quality outcome in head injury and pulmonary disease. Considerably enlarged in size, this book will remain the basic reference on the neuropsychological aspects of diseases affecting brain and behavior.

Psychopathological and Neurological Dysfunctions Following Open-Heart Surgery by R. Becker,J. Katz,M.-J. Polonius,H. Speidel Pdf

The Surgeon as a Humanist Medicine is the most humane of the sciences and the most scientific of the humanities. Cardiac surgery today provides a most natural confluence for the high technology of medicine and the humanistic values traditional in the practice of medicine. The cardiac surgeon must, of necessity, be knowledgeable in physiology and cardio logy, and must also possess consummate surgical technical skill. The attainment of these skills over long years of training leads many of these surgeons to believe or per ceive this long struggle as an apotheosis of their position in life, rather than as an education in bringing the latest scientific advances to the care of patients. The problem lies not only with the cardiac surgeon; it is also contributed to by the patients' perception of heart surgery, heart disease, and the mystery of the science and physiology involved. The patient with heart disease expecting surgery may, for the first time, be facing the finiteness of his existence. The low risk of cardiac surgery to day not withstanding, the coronary surgery patients, most likely a type A personality, is faced with a perceived threat to his invulnerability, his self-image, his family, his independence, his control of situations, and his very existence.

Acute Care Surgery in Geriatric Patients by Patrizio Petrone,Collin E.M. Brathwaite Pdf

This comprehensive text will provide a state-of-the art review of the field of geriatric acute care surgery, reviewing new epidemiology data about risk factors for this type of trauma. Assessment of the geriatric trauma patient is unique, and this population requires special attention. Moreover, geriatric patients often suffer from mild to severe cognitive impairment, cardiovascular, and pulmonary insufficiency, which can complicate trauma. This comorbidity informs the evaluation, diagnosis and management of geriatric trauma and stresses the importance of team-based interprofessional care for affected patients. Opening chapters describe general principles of geriatric acute care, the physiology of aging, frailty, injury prevention, and goals of care. The main section of the book presents the latest treatment strategies for traumatic orthopedic, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal trauma, including sepsis, complications and critical care monitoring, before turning to nursing considerations for this ever-growing population. Additional chapters on outcomes and COVID management complete the presentation. Providing a concise yet comprehensive summary of the current status of the field that will help guide patient management and stimulate investigative efforts, this text will serve as a very useful resource for physicians, medical students, residents, nurses, therapists, and researchers dealing with, and interested in this challenging type of trauma.

Neuropsychiatric Disorders by Koho Miyoshi,Yasushi Morimura,Kiyoshi Maeda Pdf

Around the world societies are facing growing aging populations with the concomitant increase in neuropsychiatric disorders. Neuropsychiatric disorders are organic brain diseases with psychiatric symptoms, as in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, that cause cognitive impairment, including dementia, amnesic syndrome, and personality–behavioral changes. As a clinical science, neuropsychiatry aims to explore the complex interrelationship between behavior and brain function from a variety of perspectives, including those of psychology, neurology, and psychiatry. This concise and updated monograph comprises the latest findings in the field and includes chapters on delusional symptoms, mood disorders and neurotic symptoms, cognitive impairment, behavioral and personality changes, and recently, cerebral alterations revealed in PTSD patients and in endogenous psychoses through neuroimaging and neuropathology. These findings will certainly widen the realm of neuropsychiatry going forward and will prove of great value to specialists as well as to academics and trainees in neurology, psychiatry, neuropsychology, neuroradiology, neuropathology, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and clinical genetics. Ultimately, neuropsychiatry aims to prevent and reduce the suffering of individuals with the psychiatric symptoms of cerebral disorders.

Current Perspectives of the Extracorporeal Circulation by D. Baykut,A. Krian Pdf

The rapid technical improvement of the extracorporeal circulation in the past decades has led to safer, more comfortable and more compatible operations in cardiac surgery and interventions which used to be an adventure are now routine practice. Although most technical variables can easily be accommo dated today, the physical influence of artificial circulation systems on blood and tissue still remains uncertain in many cases. One of our main observations in the use of the extracorporeal circulation is that the prolonged interaction with unphysiological surfaces and forces of ten releases a cascade of blood and tissue reactions, resulting in a complex type of "disease". Thus, the symptoms can range from unspecific pulmonary inflammations to a severe renal failure or from coagulation problems to a heavy cerebrovascular stroke. Based on these facts, an interdisciplinary workshop named "Current Per spectives of the Extracorporeal Circulation" took place in Duisburg, Ger many on March 26, 1999. The rationale behind the word "interdisciplinary" was to make a step for ward to establish a joint field of knowledge which would be capable of link ing the experiences and transfer the know-how of various specialists like car diac surgeons, neurologists, physiologists or the healthcare industry with their contributions to this essential topic from different perspectives.

Brain and Heart Dynamics by Stefano Govoni,Pierluigi Politi,Emilio Vanoli Pdf

This ambitious and comprehensive handbook represents an essential contribution to our current understanding of interactions between heart and brain, a research topic generating growing interest. Despite the increasing awareness that neural mechanisms are the primary cause of cardiac disease and its progression, therapy continues to focus on end-organ protection and does not approach the neural core of the problem. Growing public health problems such as heart failure are still treated with autonomic drugs that are 30-40 years old and simply act on cardiac receptors. However, it has now been shown that the progression of ischemic heart disease to heart failure is mainly due to abnormal central responses to incipient cardiac disease, with neural activation the primary cause rather than the consequence of cardiac remodeling. Written by leading international experts in their respective research areas, the book presents a variety of perspectives on the core topic: from social and philosophical to gender-related aspects. It is designed for a broad readership and includes dedicated sections for cardiologists, psychiatrists, neurologists and psychotherapists looking for a more insightful and targeted approach to neuro-cardiovascular disease.

The management of critically ill patients has,in the past few years, been a discipline at the forefront of development which continues to make progress with the support of basic and clinical research in the broadest sense. The application of biotechnology in this particular area has revealed itself to be essential in an attempt to provide the best interpretation of the bio-humoral and functional alterations present in a long series of often complex clinical conditions. The care of the critically ill is also at the forefront in the application of increasingly sophisticated clinical monitoring systems that also contribute to standardizing certain procedures, establish guidelines, and evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic interventions and their costs.

Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation and Neuropsychiatric Disorders by Antonio M. Esquinas,Andrea Fabbo,Filiz Koc,Agnieszka Prymus,Małgorzata Farnik Pdf

In different sections of this book the relationships between the patterns of psychological response in acute and chronic respiratory failure, as well as the epidemiology of neuropsychiatric disorders in ventilator management, are collected and analyzed. Main concepts such as “vulnerability to stress”, critical illness-psychological stress and susceptibility that may develop during NIV support, as well as the diagnosis of neuropsychiatric disorders in respiratory failure are also summarized. A section is devoted to the most frequent indications of NIV, also including a special use of NIV in pandemic and high-risk infections, as well as in several other conditions such as acute and chronic respiratory failures and neurological disorders. A summary of practical approaches for treatment and prevention in neurologic and psychiatric disorders during noninvasive mechanical ventilation, as well as the perspective in terms of outcomes, quality-of-life, palliative care is also given. The book is intended for all those healthcare professionals treating patients suffering from neurological or psychiatric disorders and who develop acute or chronic respiratory failure. Neurologists, psychiatrists, pulmonary critical care professionals, geriatricians, internists and psychologists will find in the book a valuable guide for their everyday clinical practice.
