Practical Cell Culture Techniques by Alan A. Boulton,Glen B. Baker,Wolfgang Walz Pdf
Most cells will survive removal from the natural mic- environment of their in vivo tissue and placement into a sterile culture dish under optimal conditions. Not only do they survive, but they also multiply and express differen- ated properties in such a culture dish. A few cells do this in suspension, but most will need some kind of mechanical support substituting for their natural connections with other cells. The surface of a culture dish that might have to be coated is usually sufficient. The recent trend to standa- ization of conditions and the existence of commercial ent- prises with adequate funds and specializing in the needs of scientists were responsible for the tremendous proliferation of cell culture techniques in all fields of research in the last 20 years. No longer does a scientist have to concentrate all his/her efforts on that technology; the new trends make it feasible to employ cell culture techniques as only one of the many methods available in a small corner of a larger research laboratory. Some areas of research depend more heavily than others on cell culture techniques. Neuroscience is one of the areas that has developed hand in hand with the prol- eration of cell culture methodology. Molecular biological aspects, cell differentiation and development, neurophy- ological and neurochemical studies, as well as investigations into the nature of various diseases are now to a large extent dependent on the use of cell cultures.

Cell Culture Methods for In Vitro Toxicology by G. Stacey,Alan Doyle,Margherita Ferro Pdf
Cell Culture Methods for in vitro Toxicology introduces the reader to a range of techniques involved in the use of in vitro cell culture in toxicological studies. It deals with major cell types studied in the field of toxicology and will be useful for anyone wishing to start work with animal cell cultures or to refresh their knowledge relating to in vitro cell models. Fundamental chapters deal with the general biology of cytotoxicity and cell immortalisation these are key issues for in vitro systems addressing the `3Rs' principle. Up-to-date overviews deal with the use of cells from liver, brain and intestine. In addition, biochemical analysis of cell responses, biotransformation pathways in cells and recombinant approaches to the early detection of cell stress are also covered in detail. Prominent features of in vitro technologies also include regulation, biosafety and standardisation. Dedicated chapters deal with these issues in a practical way in order to lead the reader to the right source of information. This book provides an up-to-date, informative and practical review of cell culture methods for in vitro toxicology. It will be of equal benefit to students and experienced toxicologists with little experience of in vitro cell culture.

In the last 20 years cell culture has developed enormously from being used only in specialized areas of research to being the cornerstone of probably the world's fastest-growing industry, biotechnology. The primary aim of this book is to guide the newcomer progressively through all those areas which nowadays are fundamental to the performance of cell culture. The book will also prove useful to the experienced worker. Topics covered include setting up and equipping a cell culture laboratory, sterilization of fluids and equipment, culture media, culture technique, the maintenance of cell lines, primary culture and the isolation of new cell lines, specific cell types and their requirements, single cell cloning, quality control of cell lines and the prevention, detection, and cure of contamination, and good laboratory practice in the cell culture laboratory.
This book provides concise practical instructions for setting up a cell culture facility and operating it effectively and safely. Procedures are described to guide the readers from the initiation of primary cultures, handling established cell lines and quantifying their performance, through to the production of specialist cell types by immortalization. The user-friendly format makes Mammalian Cell Culture: Essential Techniques a convenient summary of techniques for experienced workers as well as an invaluable aid to tissue culture in nonspecialized environments. The Essential Techniques Series books are designed to provide you with immediate access to the protocols you require every day. These handy pocket-sized manuals are easy to carry around, and conveniently spiral bound making them ideal for lab bench work. Written by experienced laboratory researchers, each book in the Essential Techniques Series gives up-to-date, tried and tested practical information for the life scientist. For each key technique these books: introduce the most commonly used methods, explain the advantages and disadvantages of the methods, and give advice on which procedure to use, provide easy to follow step-by-step protocols, with experimental notes and tips on where to pause, plus information on safety and suppliers.

Epithelial Cell Culture Protocols by Clare Wise Pdf
There have been significant advances in research involving the isolation and culture of epithelial cells in the past decade, and many new techniques have been developed. Monolayer cultures can be used to evaluate the nature and behavior of cells, while the use of epithelial cells in model systems has allowed a deeper understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms and interactions. The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to many techniques for epithelial cell culture, combining in one volume the more commonly used protocols along with many that are more speci- ized. Epithelial Cell Culture Protocols should help those who are new to this field and want to learn the basic culture techniques, as well as those needing to use more wide ranging and specific protocols. It should be a useful resource on its own, and also complement the other volumes that have been written about cell culture in the Methods in Molecular Biology series. Epithelial Cell Culture Protocols covers a wide variety of protocols, mostly aimed at the researcher, but also a few aimed at clinicians. The est- lishment and maintenance of primary cultures derived from many different tissues and different species is covered. Particular emphasis has been placed on protocols needed to further analyze and assess epithelial cells, for example, by looking at apoptosis and integrins and by measuring membrane capa- tance and confluence. Using different co-culture techniques, it is possible also to develop models to investigate many different systems in vitro.
