The efforts of theological seminaries, schools of philanthropy, schools of business, and schools of education to employ sociological theory as an instrument for the analysis of any kind of social situation, or as a master-key to all of their treasure houses, are destined, I still believe, to result in success. Such success awaits standardization, and that - again expressing merely my own opinion - the university professors will yet give us; they - some of them - will come to the aid of the schools that educate social workers and will trim down the far-ramifying sociological theory to the shape of a tool which these workers can be easily trained to use... In my class every student works on some group or institution with which he is familiar - his practice class, if he has one, or his boarding club, literary society, church, family, neighborhood. As we advance through the principles of sociology he applies them to his own special group and writes a sociological analysis of it by instalments. Emphasis is placed upon those subjects that will be of greatest practical value to the student, such as immigration, the race question, the family, poverty, and crime, altho other phases of the science, such as the evolution of institutions and the general principles of social theory, are not neglected. At the end of each chapter is given a list of reading references, -so that the text can be used in a one term course with a limited amount of outside reading, and in a two terms course with more extended use of collateral readings. Chapter fourteen, on education, can easily be omitted if time is limited. Because of the general nature of the text and because much of the subject matter is common property, the author has made no attempt to refer to the original source of the information given; all the leading books used will be found in the bibliography at the end. Excerpt from Educational Sociology The purpose of this textbook is to make a general introductory survey of the field of sociology with especial reference to education, which prepares youth for society; and thereby to help fit youth for society through the systematic study of the data and the aspirations, the principles and methods, of an evolutionary social philosophy. The fields entered are social movements, social institutions and social measurement. That there is a need for sociological textbooks from the educational point of view is evident to all educators whether in elementary or secondary schools. The books that have hitherto appeared, however, have regarded rather the organization and betterment of school and college through a study of the applications of sociology to education than the information and training of the students themselves who read the text. The grade for which the book is intended is any class in advanced education whether beginning or reviewing sociology. These chapters have all been prepared in the light of daily class requirements. A search for the means of social progress is the task undertaken by Todd. In a lengthy definition, progress is seen to be a complex of many factors, all centering about human well-being as their aim. A prerequisite consideration in any program of progress is the character of human nature, that is, of the self. Fortunately, human nature is found to be plastic and adaptable, rich in variety and possi bility. One has many possible selves; which of them shall dominate is mainly a matter of the social environment. A type of personality which is not exploitive, nor even adaptive, but contributive, is essential to progress. It will be secured only by a comprehensive system of social education, which is therefore the means to progress. Page 21. Chapter IV. Ellwood writes from the viewpoint of social psychology. The social life is essentially psychic and sociology is essentially a psychic science. Social life is therefore to be interpreted in such terms as instinct, acquired habit, mental attitude, suggestion, values, senti ment, ideas, emotion, intelligence. It is likewise such psychic data with which education is concerned. In fact, the human social process itself is essentially an educative process, a consideration which is basal to the construction of an educational sociology. Excerpt from An Introduction to Educational Sociology An understanding of the principles of the pew science of sociology, and the application of these principles to our educational work, are of fundamental importance to the student of educational theory and administration. Much light can thus be thrown upon many of our difficult problems of educational practice and procedure. As the author well says in his preface, our schools have in the past drawn their chief inspiration from psychology, and the problem of instruction has been dealt with, as though education were almost entirely an individual matter. In so far as we have had a working social theory, too, it has been deduced from philosophical conceptions rather than from a study of society. In our theory of education, our books on management and method, and our conception of the educational process, it has been the individual point of view that has been dominant. The new science of sociology, by contrast, deals with groups rather than with individuals, and with the needs of society and the State, and any application of this science to the educational process must of necessity shift attention and emphasis from the individual to the needs of society in the large. Training for the individual child will still be important, in reality more important than ever before, but in the light of that type of individual training which will offer the largest democratic opportunity for all and best prepare individuals for participation in and service to the State.
