Cytokines and Pain by L.R. Watkins,S.F. Maier Pdf

Within the past few years, it has become recognized that the immune system communicates to the brain. Substances released from activated immune cells (cytokines) stimulate peripheral nerves, thereby signaling the brain and spinal cord that infection/inflammation has occurred. Additionally, peripheral infection/inflammation leads to de novo synthesis and release of cytokines within the brain and spinal cord. Thus, cytokines effect neural activation both peripherally and centrally. Through this communication pathway, cytokines such as interleukin-1, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor markedly alter brain function, physiology and behavior. One important but underrecognized aspect of this communication is the dramatic impact that immune activation has on pain modulation. The purpose of this book is to examine, for the first time, immune-to-brain communication from the viewpoint of its effect on pain processing. It is aimed both at the basic scientist and health care providers, in order to clarify the major role that substances released by immune cells play in pain modulation. This book contains chapters contributed by all of the major laboratories focused on understanding how cytokines modulate pain. These chapters provide a unique vantage point from which to examine this question, as the summarized work ranges from evolutionary approaches across diverse species, to the basics of the immune response, to the effect of cytokines on peripheral and central nervous system sites, to therapeutic potential in humans.

CPP, Cell-Penetrating Peptides by Ülo Langel Pdf

In this book, a summary and update of the most important areas of cell-penetrating peptides (CPP) research are presented, while raising relevant questions for further development. The CPP sequences are presented and discussed throughout the book. The methods for testing CPP mechanisms are discussed in detail. Various approaches for the testing of endocytotic pathways of CPP uptake are also described. Different CPP uptake experiments are compared since it is becoming clear that it is often best to apply several methods in a complementary manner in order to most comprehensively evaluate CPP uptake mechanisms due to the complexity of these processes. A brief summary of functionality issues of CPPs, both in vitro and in vivo, is discussed. Therapeutic potential of CPPs and commercial developments are discussed. The present, second edition of this book is the updated and expanded version of the first edition, published in 2019. The development of the field of cell-penetrating peptides in these five years has been obvious and exciting. This second edition of the book has been partly reorganized and comprehensively expanded with the exciting research in 2019-2023. Around 2500 novel scientific articles have become available, most of them are reviewed in the second edition. Additional rapidly growing areas of high impact presented in this second edition are therapeutic developments (Chapter 16) and delivery of oligonucleotides and proteins/peptides (Chapters 5 and 6) including novel reports on genome editing with CPP assistance. Also, several additional examples are available now on clinical trials using CPPs (Chapter 15). The book is written for researchers and students in the field.

Essential Concepts in Molecular Pathology by William B. Coleman,Gregory J. Tsongalis Pdf

Essential Concepts in Molecular Pathology, Second Edition, offers an introduction to molecular genetics and the "molecular" aspects of human disease. The book illustrates how pathologists harness their understanding of these entities to develop new diagnostics and treatments for various human diseases. This new edition offers pathology, genetics residents, and molecular pathology fellows an advanced understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that goes beyond what they learned in medical and graduate school. By bridging molecular concepts of pathogenesis to the clinical expression of disease in cell, tissue and organ, this fully updated, introductory reference provides the background necessary for an understanding of today’s advances in pathology and medicine. Explains the practice of "molecular medicine" and the translational aspects of molecular pathology, including molecular diagnostics, molecular assessment and personalized medicine Orients non-pathologists on what pathologists look for and how they interpret their observational findings based on histopathology Provides the reader with what is missing from most targeted introductions to pathology—the cell biology behind pathophysiology

Psychoneuroimmunology by Robert Ader Pdf

Psychoneuroimmunology is the study of interactions among behavioral, neural and endocrine, and immunologic processes of adaptation. These two volumes provide a clearly written, extensively referenced summary of some of the behavioral, neural and endocrine regulators of immune responses and immunologically mediated disease processes and of the behavioral and neuroendocrine effects of immune system activity. Several chapters expand upon topics reviewed in earlier editions of this series; most chapters cover active areas of research that have not previously been reviewed. As illustrated in this fourth edition, interdisciplinary research continues to provide evidence that the brain and immune system represent a single, integrated system of defense.

Virology is in a sense both one of the most important precursors and one of the most significant beneficiaries of structural and cellular molecular biology. Numerous breakthroughs in our understanding of the molecular interactions of viruses with host cells are ready for translation into medically important applications such as the prevention and treatment of viral infections. This book collects a wide variety of examples of frontline research into molecular aspects of viral infections from virological, immunological, cell- and molecular-biological, structural, and theoretical perspectives. Contributors are world leaders in their fields of study and represent prestigious academic and research institutions Review articles vary vastly in scope: some focus on a narrowly defined scientific problem of one particular virus with careful introduction for the non-specialist; others are essays in general and comparative virology with forays into specific viral species or molecules The different perspectives complement each other and collectively the contributions provide an impression of the fast-moving frontlines of virology while showing how the problems have evolved Structural data are presented through high-quality illustrations

Role of Nutrition in Providing Pro-/Anti-Inflammatory Balance: Emerging Research and Opportunities by Gün?en, U?ur,Atan, Ramazan Mert Pdf

Food selection plays an important role in ensuring pro- and anti-inflammatory balance. Certain foods are responsible for increasing inflammation while others have anti-inflammation properties. Western diets especially, rich in red meat, simple carbohydrates, and refined grains, increase the levels of pro-inflammatory markers, C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Additionally, short- and long-chain fatty acids, various micronutrients including zinc, selenium, iron, vitamin A, probiotics, and prebiotic foods affect inflammation. As inflammation can be linked to a variety of diseases, more studies are needed about nutrition and its ability to prevent inflammation. Role of Nutrition in Providing Pro-/Anti-Inflammatory Balance: Emerging Research and Opportunities is an essential publication that examines balancing inflammation through nutrition and nutritional strategies. Firstly, information about the formation process of inflammation, biomarkers used for diagnosis, diseases affected by inflammation, and their incidence in society are discussed. Subsequently, balancing inflammation in individuals through macro- and micro-nutrient consumption, nutritional supplements (probiotics and prebiotics), bioactive proteins and peptides, and dietary forms is examined. Featuring research covering a broad range of topics including food supplements, diet types, and bioactive proteins, this book is ideally designed for nutritionists, dieticians, clinicians, doctors, nurses, healthcare providers, researchers, academicians, and students.
