Qualitative Analysis for Secondary Schools (Classic Reprint) by Cyrus Wendell Irish Pdf

Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis for Secondary Schools Many teachers of chemistry in attempting to furnish, a satisfactory course in Qualitative Analysis for secondary schools have been confronted by the lack of a text-book sufficiently simple, and at the same time sufficiently complete for their purpose. The many excellent text-books on Qualitative Analysis already published have been specially adapted to the needs of the more mature college student. This work, therefore, has been made as simple as possible, while providing a course of study adequate for secondary schools. Methods of basic analysis in the presence of phosphates and oxalates have been omitted. The separation of the members of the iron group has been greatly shortened and simplified by the introduction of hydrogen peroxide to oxidize the chromium to the acid state. Obscure and complicated reactions have been omitted. The first half of a one year's course in chemistry should be devoted to a general introduction to the theory of the science, and to a close study of the most common nonmetallic radicals. The second half year should deal with the basic radicals and should be combined with the study of Qualitative Analysis. If descriptive chemistry of the basic radicals is studied by laboratory methods, the metals must be submitted to their more important reactions. These reactions, well studied, equip the student for intelligent work in qualitative separation of the metals. The subject presented in this way always holds the interest of the student to the end, and the stimulus for the work is always found in the fascination of the subject. Such a course as here outlined gives the best possible training in inductive reasoning, and adds as much to the general information of the student as any science taught in secondary schools. The large number of suggestive questions are divided into two classes, one to bring out the conclusions drawn from the experiments, the other to call attention to the metals dealt with, and to their more important compounds. School Size Effects Revisited by Hans Luyten,Maria Hendriks,Jaap Scheerens Pdf

This book provides a thorough review of the research literature on the effect of school size in primary and secondary education on three types of outcomes: student achievement, non-cognitive outcomes and costs per student. Based on 84 scientific publications and several prior reviews, the book discusses four main areas: the impact of school size on cognitive learning outcomes and non-cognitive outcomes; the "state of the art" of empirical research on economies of size; the direct and indirect impact of school size, conditioned by other school context variables on student performance and the specific position of the Netherlands in an international perspective. The book presents summaries of the results and main conclusions found and discusses these with respect to their relevance for educational policy in general and for the Netherlands in particular. The book concludes with suggestions for future research on school size.

Secondary Qualitative Data Analysis in the Health and Social Sciences by Cheryl Tatano Beck Pdf

Despite a long history in quantitative research, it is only recently that enthusiasm for secondary analysis of qualitative data has gained momentum across health and social science disciplines. Given that researchers have long known the inordinate amount of time and energy invested in conducting qualitative research, the appeal of secondary analysis of qualitative data is clear. Involving the use of an existing dataset to answer research questions that are different from those asked in the original study, this method allows researchers to once again make use of their hard-earned qualitative dataset and to listen to their participants’ voices to the best of their ability in order to improve care and promote understanding. As secondary qualitative data analysis continues to evolve, more methodological guidance is needed. This book outlines three approaches to secondary data analysis and addresses the key issues that researchers need to wrestle with, such as ethical considerations, voice, and representation. Intellectual and interpretive hazards that can jeopardize the outcome of these analyses are highlighted and discussed, as are the criteria for assessing their quality and trustworthiness. Written as a thought-provoking guide for qualitative researchers from across the health and social sciences, this text includes a review of the state of the science in nursing and a number of in-depth illustrative case studies.
