The Resistance, Persistence and Resilience of Black Families Raising Children with Autism by Elizabeth Drame,Tara Adams,Veronica Nolden,Judy Nardi Pdf

The Resistance, Persistence and Resilience of Black Families Raising Children with Autism presents nuanced perspectives in the form of counternarratives of what Black families who have children with autism experience at the intersection of race, class, disability and gender. It intentionally centers the expertise of Black parents, challenging what is considered knowledge, whose knowledge counts, and how knowledge can be co-generated for learning, sharing and advocacy. The book speaks directly to Black parents on the autism journey. To right systemic racial inequities and to cultivate culturally responsive practices, it is critical for practitioners and professionals to understand what is known about Black families' experiences with autism in general and how these experiences differ because of our intersecting identities. University faculty and students in programs involving medicine, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, nursing, political science, school psychology, teaching, special education and leadership can benefit from the wisdom offered by these parents. This text is perfect for several courses, including those in departments of anthropology, women and gender studies, health sciences, psychology, special education, teacher education and administrative leadership. In addition, given the uniquely Black perspective presented in the text, this text is relevant to other fields, including ethnic studies, cultural studies, urban studies and African American studies. It is relevant to individuals who wish to better understand how issues of race and intra-racial differences shape lived experiences with disability in American society.

The Mechanics of Threaded Fasteners and Bolted Joints for Engineering and Design by Toshimichi Fukuoka Pdf

The Mechanics of Threaded Fasteners and Bolted Joints outlines how threaded fasteners and bolted joints fail, how these failures can be remedied, and ultimately how to avoid them altogether through tightening methods, material strength, and avoiding loosening. The book demonstrates how to select the appropriate tightening method and determine the optimal tightening procedure for varying nominal diameters. Using the finite element method, it discusses characteristics of stress concentration and fatigue strength and covers bolt force variation due to elastic interaction. The separation of the plate interface via increased external force as the primary cause of fatigue failure in threaded fasteners is discussed, with effective countermeasures provided. Empirical equations of thermal contact coefficient and apparent thermal contact coefficient in simple form are included as well.?? Outlines various tightening methods such as torque control, angle control, direct tension, and thermal expansion Demonstrates methods for preventing fatigue failure Discusses the effect of high and low temperature thermal loads on the strength of bolted joints by looking at thermal contact resistance at the interface

Fund Raising in the United States by Anonim Pdf

Fund raising in the United States is big business. Some 350,000 nonprofit organizations employ an army of fund raisers, all competing for their share, employing the latest technology in computerized direct mail and telemarketing. The American public is swamped with appeals on behalf of this cause or that, as ever more ambitious financial goals are set. Equally intense are demands on active citizens to staff fund-raising drives; a 1987 survey found that 48 percent of Americans engage in some sort of volunteer work. Popular philanthropy, financed by organized, high-pressure fund raising, is uniquely American. This classic history of fund raising in the United States, first published in 1965, has been out of print for the last twenty-two years despite continuing demand. It covers the role of fund raising from the seventeenth century to the present, with emphasis on mass secular fund raising in the twentieth century (religious fund raising is excluded). It documents techniques and problems that are central to the profession today, as well as events and persons on the cutting edge. As both Cutlip and Schwartz indicate in this new edition, since 1964 the climate for philanthropy has been conditioned by two factors-public policies and public perception. Reduction in federal grants to charities and changes in tax policies have increased the gap between needs and resources. Public perception is also a problem, as the result of rampant scandals. Competition for the philanthropic dollar is keener than ever; but the picture is not all gloomy. Schwartz outlines nine positive trends. Among them is increasing interest in philanthropic studies in many areas of academia, including history, sociology, economics, public policy, behavioral sciences, social work, and American studies. There is also increasing interest overseas, as American approaches to fund raising become an example for other nations.

Offshore Geotechnical Engineering by Mark Randolph,Susan Gourvenec Pdf

Design practice in offshore geotechnical engineering has grown out of onshore practice, but the two application areas have tended to diverge over the last thirty years, driven partly by the scale of the foundation and anchoring elements used offshore, and partly by fundamental differences in construction and installation techniques. As a consequence offshore geotechnical engineering has grown as a speciality. The structure of Offshore Geotechnical Engineering follows a pattern that mimics the flow of a typical offshore project. In the early chapters it provides a brief overview of the marine environment, offshore site investigation techniques and interpretation of soil behaviour. It proceeds to cover geotechnical design of piled foundations, shallow foundations and anchoring systems. Three topics are then covered which require a more multi-disciplinary approach: the design of mobile drilling rigs, pipelines and geohazards. This book serves as a framework for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and will appeal to professional engineers specialising in the offshore industry.

Impact Wear of Materials by P.A. Engel Pdf

Impact Wear of Materials is entirely devoted to quantitative treatment of various forms of wear occurring in impact-loaded mechanical components. Impact wear is classified under two headings, namely `erosive' and `percussive' wear. In erosive wear, particle streams and liquid jets are discussed. The subject is developed with emphasis on material relations, stress analysis and the historical progress of research. In percussive wear, a wide variety of wear mechanisms is described. The author's experimental/analytical work created the groundwork for a general procedure of impact wear-law formulation, combining impact analysis with the physical wear mechanism. Ballistic impact and pivotal hammering, compound impact, the optimal wearpath, lubrication, plasticity, and flexible media are some of the topics considered. The book develops a new conceptual approach to impact, impact-originated wear and wear in general. It describes and utilizes the modern tools of observation in wear science. In mechanical analysis it emphasizes quantitative treatment, using such tools as finite element stress analysis, APL programming language etc., each applied with classic simplicity. Numerous photographs, tables, figures and examples are used throughout the text and the mathematical treatment strives for simplicity and conceptual clarity. The book is of value to mechanical component designers, analysts and researchers. It is also useful in science and engineering curricula at senior and graduate level and, although its appeal is primarily in tribology, machine design and materials science, its interdisciplinary language makes it accessible to any branch of the physical sciences and engineering.

Chronic Pulmonary Hyperinflation by A. Grassino,C. Rampulla,N. Ambrosino,C. Fracchia Pdf

The workshops that have been held over the past few years and the volumes published in their wake have proved highly successful and have prompted us to press on with our initial plans. Our basic aim was to tackle certain very important problems in respiratory rehabilitation and then discuss the various issues with people from all over the wodd engaged in the updating of experience and know ledge in this field. We therefore firmly believe that this ongoing effort is of fundamental importance. Hyperinflation, which is still a poody defined c1inical and physiopatho logical condition, is the focal point ofthis present study, which is aimed at discussing and weighing up the physiopathological mechanisms, c1inical consequences, and rehabilitation possibilities in a disease in which, until relatively recently, rehabilitation had seemed almost totally ineffective. The present contributions, however, show us how very important and versatile rehabilitation may be in its treatment. Perhaps, if we consider this branch of medicine as one which now no longer simply draws upon other sciences, but make an active contribution in its own right, we will have touched upon the most important aspect of this study. If I may, I would just like to add how very pleasing it is for me to acknow ledge how much this joint effort has contributed, in terms of true insights and above all VI results, to finding solutions to the problems addressed in reeent years.
